Use hyphenated, unregistered tags as styling hooks, give layout wrappers an explicit display mode, and use container queries when a component should respond to the space it has—not the size of the screen. This does not register a Web Component or give the tag Web Component lifecycle behavior.
What “CSS-only custom elements” means
A hyphenated tag such as <article-card> can appear in HTML and be targeted by CSS even if it has not been registered with JavaScript. That makes it a convenient, descriptive wrapper for a layout. It is not the same as a registered Web Component: the browser’s custom-elements registry and lifecycle behavior require defining and registering a JavaScript class. See MDN’s guide to using custom elements.
Custom tags default to inline display. If a tag is meant to wrap a card, grid, or other layout, explicitly set display to block, grid, or flex, as appropriate. The web.dev custom elements guide notes this default.
Build a component that adapts to its available width
Container queries are useful when the same component may appear in different-sized columns or sidebars. Declare a size-query container on the wrapper, then use an @container rule to style its descendants when the wrapper has enough inline space. The query styles descendants; it does not let the container query its own size through that rule. MDN describes the feature as applying styles to nested elements based on a specific container’s features in its container size and style queries guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

<article-card>
<img src="item.jpg" alt="">
<div>
<h2>Card heading</h2>
<p>Card summary</p>
</div>
</article-card>
</article-grid>
article-grid {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fit, minmax(min(100%, 18rem), 1fr));
gap: 1rem;
}
article-card {
display: block;
container: card / inline-size;
border: 1px solid #bbb;
padding: 1rem;
}
@container card (inline-size > 32rem) {
article-card {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: minmax(8rem, 1fr) 2fr;
gap: 1rem;
align-items: start;
}
}
The container shorthand above names the container card and sets inline-size containment. You can write container-type: inline-size instead when you do not need a name. Use the threshold as a content-fit decision: here, the card switches to columns above 32rem because that is the example’s chosen fit point, not because it is a universal device breakpoint.
For a fluid value tied to the query container’s inline size, use cqi: padding-inline: 2cqi means padding equal to 2% of that container’s inline size. The element using the unit cannot use its own size as the measurement container; doing so would create a circular size dependency. See MDN’s container query documentation.

Choose container queries or media queries by what should trigger the change
| What changes | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A component changes when its allocated column or sidebar gets wider | @container |
It responds to a declared containing element, so it can adapt independently of viewport width. |
| Page-level composition, such as navigation or a sidebar, changes with screen space | @media |
Media queries respond to viewport or device features. |
| A baseline is needed where container queries are unavailable | Grid or Flex with @media |
This can keep a layout workable, but the fallback is viewport-based rather than component-local. |
A page can use both mechanisms: media queries for page composition and container queries for components. For details, see MDN’s container query guide and MDN’s media query documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the baseline useful and check support
Start with a layout that works at narrow widths, such as the grid above, then add the container-query enhancement for components that need a different arrangement when their local space grows. If you need to support an environment without container queries, use a workable Grid or Flex layout with viewport media queries as a fallback; it will not respond to the component’s own allocated width. MDN discusses this approach in its container query guide.

Check current browser compatibility for the specific container-query features you use before relying on them for a required layout. The sources cited here establish how to use the features, but do not establish a current browser-by-browser compatibility matrix. Also, do not confuse size queries with style queries: MDN’s style-query guidance says the currently supported style() feature queries custom properties, not arbitrary computed CSS properties.
