Build mobile personalization as a lifecycle-aware data-to-decision-to-render loop, not as a promise that every screen changes instantly. Collect permitted interaction signals, resolve them to an identity only under the applicable consent state, obtain a configuration or individualized decision, render it through app-approved UI, and measure exposure and outcomes. The exact SDK, refresh behavior, and rendering path depend on the platform and product: support for one framework does not establish feature parity on the others.
What “real-time personalization” means in a mobile app
A practical system has six stages. The app gathers relevant events; associates them with a permitted identity; sends the resulting signals to a decision or configuration service; receives parameters or a personalized choice; renders only content and components the app supports; and records exposures and actions so the result can be evaluated. Salesforce describes a related division of responsibility in which Personalization returns targeted content while Data 360 captures interactions and supports identity resolution, consent, and behavioral data (Salesforce Personalize Mobile Experiences).

“Real-time” is a latency goal and delivery mechanism, not a guarantee of continuous delivery. For example, Firebase Remote Config’s real-time Flutter flow keeps an HTTP connection while the app is foregrounded. A published template change can invalidate the client’s cached configuration, trigger a fetch, and invoke a listener. The connection stops when the app is backgrounded and resumes on foreground; it is not a promise of background updates (Firebase real-time Remote Config).
Keep the decision types distinct
- Remote configuration delivers values that alter app behavior or appearance without requiring an app update. Parameters can apply broadly or to defined segments. It is a delivery and control mechanism, not inherently an individualized decision (Firebase Remote Config).
- Feature flags and rollouts control whether a capability is enabled for users or cohorts. They can reduce release risk, but are not the same as optimizing an experience for each user.
- A/B testing compares alternatives over a defined experiment, with deliberate evaluation before deciding what to roll out.
- Personalization selects or tunes an experience toward a measurable objective, potentially adapting for individual users. Firebase recommends it when the experience can usefully differ by person, the goal can be expressed through Analytics events, and human review is not required (Firebase Remote Config personalization).
- Messaging delivers a communication such as a push notification or in-app message. An engagement SDK may support messaging across platforms, but that does not mean its messaging feature is the same mechanism as an app-owned, per-user content decision.
Platform support is not interchangeable
Choose an integration by capability, not by the fact that a vendor lists a platform name. The following matrix reflects the cited official documentation; it does not imply that every feature, lifecycle detail, or component is identical across SDKs.

Design the decision and rendering path
1. Decide what is safe to vary
Start with app behavior or content that can change without breaking navigation, accessibility, or user expectations. Define a stable in-app default for every remotely controlled value. Keep secrets and confidential information out of client-readable configuration: Firebase warns that values available to an app instance can be accessed by end users (Firebase Remote Config).

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
2. Define alternatives and an objective
For a meaningful personalized choice, provide plausible alternatives and define an Analytics-measurable objective before enabling optimization. Choose an outcome that reflects product value rather than an easy proxy that may conflict with it. Firebase’s guidance favors conventional A/B testing instead when the team needs a fixed time window, deliberate comparison of competing metrics, statistical significance before rollout, a shared optimum, or human review (Firebase Remote Config personalization). The choice is between evaluation approaches; neither implies a guaranteed business lift.

Use defaults before a network result is available, cache fetched values according to the SDK’s behavior, and decide when changes may become visible. A configuration update should not unexpectedly replace a screen mid-task. Firebase’s real-time guidance recommends an initial fetch and listening during the session; the update callback is often an appropriate point to activate values. Activate only the relevant keys when that better fits the UI transition (Firebase real-time Remote Config).

- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.

Keep rendering owned by the app unless a chosen product explicitly supplies content components. Validate any returned component or content-zone identifier against the set the app knows how to render. Unsupported, missing, stale, or malformed decisions should fall back to a safe default rather than produce an empty or broken surface.
Handle app lifecycle, identity, and consent
Foreground and background behavior
For Firebase’s documented real-time Remote Config flow, register the listener during an active session and account for the connection stopping in the background and resuming when the app returns to the foreground. The service also documents a 20 million concurrent open-connection project limit; this is a vendor service limit, not a client-side latency or usage benchmark. If incremental requests are rejected, SDK clients fall back to standard fetch (Firebase real-time Remote Config). Other SDKs may have different refresh and lifecycle behavior, so make those policies explicit in your implementation.

Consent before identity-linked personalization
Decide what events may be collected, how identities are mapped, how opt-in and opt-out change behavior, and what data is retained or minimized. Salesforce’s Flutter low-code guide states that personalization must remain disabled until the user explicitly opts in. That requirement is specific to the documented Salesforce integration, but the broader engineering principle is to make consent state an input to collection and decisioning rather than an afterthought (Salesforce Flutter Low-Code Integration).
Salesforce Flutter initialization and refresh details
In Salesforce’s documented Flutter low-code path, initialize the native SDKs before a Flutter ContentZone attempts to fetch. A matching server-side zone and allowed components are required. The guide also notes that context or identity changes do not automatically trigger a refetch in the documented widget, so an explicit refresh may be needed once consent or identity is settled. Recommendation cards are built eagerly and are not internally scrollable; the containing app must account for that behavior. These are integration-specific details, not general Flutter rules (Salesforce Flutter Low-Code Integration).

Measure what the user could actually see
Instrument each stage with consistent event names and semantics: decision requested, result received, eligible surface rendered, exposure, and meaningful action. A component mount or render callback does not necessarily prove the content was visible to the user. Salesforce’s Flutter guide identifies built-in View and Click as the end-to-end supported actions in that integration, and clarifies that View is a mount/render event rather than verified on-screen visibility (Salesforce Flutter Low-Code Integration).
Define exposure deliberately for your product: for example, whether a surface must be on-screen, unobscured, and visible for a chosen duration before it counts. That event definition belongs to the app’s measurement design; do not silently equate a framework lifecycle callback with verified attention. Keep the outcome event separate from the exposure event so analysis can distinguish delivery from response.
Implementation sequence for a production release
- Specify the use case: list the UI decisions that may vary, the approved alternatives, the fallback, and the user outcome to optimize or evaluate.
- Choose the evaluation method: use personalization for eligible individual-level optimization; use a fixed-window experiment when the team needs controlled comparison, multiple-metric judgment, or human approval.
- Verify framework capability: check native SDK availability, wrapper maturity, supported features, minimum OS/toolchain, and lifecycle behavior for each target. Do not assume React Native or Flutter has feature parity with native iOS or Android.
- Implement defaults and transitions: make the app usable offline or before fetching, control activation timing, validate returned content, and provide a safe fallback for errors or unsupported components.
- Gate collection and decisions: apply consent before associating behavioral events with an identity or enabling personalization, and test opt-out as well as opt-in flows.
- Instrument exposure and outcomes: distinguish decision receipt, render, actual visibility where measurable, and user action. Validate that event meaning is consistent on every platform.
- Test lifecycle and failure cases: exercise cold launch, foreground refresh, background return, offline use, identity changes, consent changes, unavailable dependencies, and a malformed or unsupported response.
- Roll out conservatively: use a controlled rollout or experiment, monitor the intended outcome and guardrail metrics, and retain a way to return to defaults.
Version requirements for Salesforce’s Flutter low-code path
The reviewed Salesforce guide lists Flutter 3.19 or later, Dart 3.3 or later, Android API 26 minimum, Java 17, Gradle 8.13, compile SDK 37, Kotlin Gradle plugin 2.3.0, Android Gradle Plugin 8.13.2, Swift 5.7, and iOS deployment target 15.0 or later. These are the guide’s stated compatibility requirements, not universal Flutter requirements, and version matrices can change; check the current guide before adoption (Salesforce Flutter Low-Code Integration).

Common implementation mistakes
- Treating remote configuration as synonymous with personalization, experimentation, or messaging.
- Claiming that “real-time” means immediate updates while an app is backgrounded or every screen is refreshed continuously.
- Assuming a vendor’s support for one framework establishes equivalent SDK features, lifecycle handling, or component rendering on another.
- Activating a remote value at an arbitrary point that can disrupt an in-progress user flow.
- Optimizing a convenient click or render proxy without checking whether it represents the intended user outcome.
- Counting a view callback as confirmed visibility when the integration defines it only as a mount or render event.
- Allowing identity or context changes to go unnoticed where the selected integration requires an explicit refresh.
