Wowza Streaming Engine extensions are usually called custom Java modules: Java classes registered in an application’s configuration. The practical sequence is to match your development environment to the exact Engine release, build and package the module using Wowza’s supported workflow, make it available to the Engine process, register its fully qualified class name on the intended application, configure any properties, then test before production deployment or an Engine upgrade.

What a Wowza custom plugin is

Wowza Streaming Engine (WSE) is a Java-based media server with a Java API for extensions. Wowza’s term for an application extension is a custom module; “plugin” is a useful shorthand, but module is the term you will encounter in its configuration and documentation. A module is associated with a particular application, rather than enabled indiscriminately across every application on a server. See Wowza’s Engine overview and live-app configuration guide.

Before you build: identify the target Engine and Java runtime

Record the exact WSE version and installation, the Java runtime configured for it, the operating system, and any third-party Java dependencies. Compatibility is release-specific: a server running a newer Java runtime does not automatically mean a module can safely use every language or runtime feature of that Java release.

Wowza’s Java support page, dated October 2, 2024, describes a transition to Java 21 beginning with WSE 4.8.28 and gives release-family-specific guidance. Its 4.9.0 release notice says that release was compiled using Java 17, that new installations included a Java 21 JRE, and that Java 17 or 21 were supported. It also cautions: “If you build a custom module using Java 21, it may not work with Wowza Streaming Engine if your source code includes Java 21 features.” Check the current Java support guidance and the release information for the exact Engine version you will run; do not treat the 4.9.0 details as a timeless rule.

Choose a development and build route

Gradle with Docker Compose

Wowza documents a Gradle-based extension workflow using Docker Compose to run WSE locally. The guide describes building, packaging, and deploying custom extensions and links the wse-plugin-builder repository. Use the current guide and repository revision together to determine the supported commands, project structure, Engine image/version, dependency handling, and deployment output for your target release. Those details can change and should not be guessed from a different project revision.

This route makes the Engine version and local integration environment explicit, which can help reproducibility. Confirm that the documented image and build setup support the particular Engine release you administer.

Wowza IDE

Wowza’s Developer Portal also indexes an IDE-based route and Java module documentation. The available documentation establishes that both approaches exist, but does not establish that one is universally preferable or required. Check the IDE instructions and support status for your target Engine version before choosing it.

Implement the Java module

The application configuration identifies a module by its fully qualified Java class name. Consult Wowza’s “Use Java modules” documentation and Java API reference for the target release before implementing lifecycle behavior: the available guidance here does not establish the precise base class, interfaces, callbacks, or complete starter class, so supplying remembered signatures would risk code that does not compile or behave correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the implementation aligned with the Engine runtime and its API version. If the module depends on third-party libraries, determine from the matching build instructions how those dependencies must be packaged and made visible to the Engine process; do not assume a particular fat-JAR or classpath arrangement.

Build, package, and make the module available to Engine

  1. Follow the matching build guide. Use Wowza’s Gradle and Docker Compose extension guide and the corresponding repository README for the current project layout, commands, Engine version, and dependency rules.
  2. Inspect the build output. Confirm the expected JAR or other artifact was produced and establish the deployment location and dependency requirements from those exact instructions.
  3. Deploy to the intended Engine environment. Make the artifact and required dependencies available to the Engine process by the documented method. An older community support thread mentions placing a JAR in an installation lib directory, but that historical discussion is not a universal current deployment rule; use the instructions for your selected workflow and release.

Register the module on the right application

After the module is available to Engine, add its class to the module list for the specific server, virtual host, and application that should use it. Wowza’s REST example updates the application’s advanced configuration with a PUT request to this route:

The example’s module entry includes a fully qualified class name, description, name, and order. Its illustrative class, com.my.custom.path.MyCustomModule, is a placeholder example—not a built-in module or a downloadable implementation. A successful update saves the application configuration and adds a corresponding <Module> entry to Application.xml. Consult the REST guide for the request format and authentication details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also manage application settings in WSE Manager or XML. WSE stores configuration as XML, with application configuration in Application.xml under the relevant virtual-host application folders. Take care to select the intended application and vhost; changing the wrong configuration scope can affect a different stream workflow.

Configure module properties

Application properties belong in the configuration scope the module expects. Wowza’s overview describes adding them in WSE Manager by specifying a path, name, type, and value, or by adding a <Property> under the appropriate XML <Properties> element. The live-app REST example also updates application-level advanced settings alongside the module list. The overview shows types including Boolean, Integer, and String.

A property entry does not make a module understand that setting automatically. The module code must read the property through the API, and its configured path and scope must match the code’s expectations. Verify the names and behavior against the module implementation and the API documentation for your Engine version.

Load and test the change safely

Use the lifecycle action appropriate to the deployment change. Wowza’s REST documentation includes an application restart action, but the available documentation does not establish that every module change requires a full server restart. Follow the build/deployment instructions for your route and release; avoid restarting the whole server by assumption.

Troubleshoot common build and registration failures

Symptom What to check
Engine cannot load the module class Verify the fully qualified class name in the application module entry, that the built artifact is available to the Engine process, and that deployment followed the instructions for the selected build route.
Class-loading errors mention a missing dependency Compare the module’s dependencies with the packaging and deployment rules in the matching build guide and repository revision; do not assume dependencies are bundled automatically.
The module loads but a setting has no effect Check the property name, type, configuration path, and application scope against what the code reads. A property is not automatically consumed simply because it appears in XML or advanced settings.
The module fails after an Engine or Java change Recheck the Java support information for that exact Engine release, rebuild as appropriate, and test the module outside production before upgrading or rolling out the change.
A configuration update affects the wrong app or does not appear Check the server, vhost, and application identifiers in the REST route or the selected WSE Manager/XML location. The module belongs to the application configuration, not an unspecified global scope.

Development notes versus always-on YouTube video

Building a WSE Java module is for extending Wowza Streaming Engine; it is not the same task as keeping an uploaded-video YouTube channel live around the clock. For that separate use case, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube. You upload a recording or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; no home computer or OBS session needs to stay on. The stream uses the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free without a card. Learn more at StreamNeo.

StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. It is not a Wowza module or a replacement for WSE development. If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running rather than extend a media server, start the free first day with StreamNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Wowza custom plugins have to be written in Java?

Wowza documents its Java API and custom Java modules as the Engine extension mechanism; use the API documentation for the target release.

Can I restart only the application after deploying a module?

Wowza documents an application restart action, but the right load or restart action depends on the deployment change and workflow. Follow the instructions for your Engine version rather than assuming every module change requires a server restart.
