Yes—you can write code and use a cloud service to build an iOS app without installing Xcode on your own computer. Services such as Expo EAS and Codemagic can compile projects in the cloud. But avoiding a local Xcode installation does not remove Apple’s requirements: physical-device development builds need signing and provisioning, and App Store and TestFlight releases still rely on Apple’s build and upload ecosystem.
What “without Xcode” can—and cannot—mean
There are several different tasks behind the phrase “build an iOS app without Xcode.” You can edit code without Xcode, send a project to a cloud service for compilation, install a development build on a real iPhone, distribute a beta through TestFlight, or submit an app for the App Store. These steps have different requirements.

- Skip local Xcode: Use a cloud build service to compile the app remotely.
- Test on a physical iPhone: Arrange Apple signing credentials and provisioning for the device or distribution method.
- Publish or use TestFlight: Meet Apple’s current build, upload, review, and privacy requirements. A cloud service may handle parts of the workflow, but it does not bypass them.
In short, a Mac with Xcode installed is not always necessary on your own desk; Apple’s tooling and account requirements still govern iOS builds and distribution.

Expo EAS: cloud development builds for Expo projects
Expo’s guide walks through creating an iOS development build in the cloud as an .ipa file, then installing it on a registered device and connecting it to the Expo development server. The guide’s physical-device path requires an Apple Developer account for signing credentials and device registration in a provisioning profile. It is most applicable when your project follows Expo’s supported workflow.
Codemagic: cloud builds for repository-based workflows
Codemagic describes a CI/CD pipeline that starts with an unsigned build and adds Apple signing credentials for a signed build. Its documented workflows cover native iOS, Flutter, and React Native, and can distribute builds to TestFlight or submit store releases. This may suit a team that already keeps its app in a repository and wants cloud compilation and release automation.

Build and install a development version
- Identify the project workflow. Use Expo EAS for an Expo-supported project, or configure a cloud CI/CD workflow such as Codemagic for an existing native iOS, Flutter, or React Native repository.
- Set up signing. For Expo’s documented physical-device development build, have an Apple Developer account and register the device through the provisioning profile. For Codemagic, provide Apple signing credentials when creating signed builds.
- Run the cloud build. Follow the chosen service’s workflow to produce an iOS build. A cloud build removes the need to run Xcode locally; it does not make signing or Apple’s platform requirements disappear.
- Install and check on a real device. Expo’s guide describes installing the development build on the registered device and connecting it to the Expo development server. For other workflows, use the installation and distribution route documented by the service and Apple.
Test on real devices, not only in a simulator
Include physical-device checks in your test plan when you can. Apple’s Xcode documentation for TestFlight distribution warns that “A simulator doesn’t run all threads that run on devices, and launching apps on devices through Xcode disables some of the watchdog timers.” Apple recommends testing across supported devices and operating-system versions and says a simulator alone is insufficient.

You do not necessarily need to buy a new iPhone: use a compatible device you already have if it covers the hardware and iOS versions you need to check. If you have no suitable device, a physical-device test is still important before treating simulator results as a complete picture.

Use TestFlight for beta distribution
TestFlight is Apple’s beta distribution service. The basic flow is to upload a build to App Store Connect, manage the build and invite testers there, and have testers install Apple’s free TestFlight app to accept invitations, test the build, and send feedback. Builds intended for external testers are submitted to Beta App Review. See Apple’s TestFlight guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What App Store release still requires
Apple documents several ways to upload builds to App Store Connect: Xcode, the App Store Connect API, Transporter, or altool. Its upload guidance currently lists Xcode 26 or later as the build version for iOS apps uploaded for customer distribution or TestFlight. Therefore, avoiding the Xcode interface on your local machine is not the same as avoiding Apple’s build tooling. Check Apple’s current upload guidance when preparing a release, because requirements can change.

Apple also requires privacy details for new apps and app updates and reviews submissions for safety, security, and reliability. Apple has announced that, effective April 2027, iOS and iPadOS apps uploaded from that date must be built with the iOS and iPadOS 27 SDK or later and target iOS 15 or later. This is a future requirement announced by Apple, not a statement that it applies to submissions before that date. Verify Apple’s submission guidance again near the time you submit.

Pick the practical route
- Expo project, development build on your iPhone: Follow Expo EAS’s cloud development-build guide and prepare the required Apple signing and device provisioning.
- Existing native iOS, Flutter, or React Native repository: Consider a Codemagic cloud pipeline for compilation, signing, and distribution automation.
- Beta testers: Upload a build to App Store Connect and distribute it through TestFlight, allowing for Beta App Review when using external testers.
- App Store submission: Confirm Apple’s current upload and SDK requirements; cloud compilation does not exempt a build from them.
