Build the MCP server with Cloudflare’s Agents SDK, wrap it with withX402, and register paid tools with paidTool. The official example demonstrates this pattern on Base Sepolia; it is a test setup, not a production deployment recipe. For production, select and verify a facilitator and network separately.
What the Cloudflare integration does
Cloudflare’s documented integration adds x402 payment handling to an MCP server through the Agents SDK. A client calls a paid tool; if payment is required, the server returns payment instructions. The client sends a payment payload on a retry, after which the server verifies payment, runs the tool, and settles the transaction.
The MCP transport expresses this exchange through tool results and MCP _meta fields. It is distinct from x402’s HTTP resource-request flow, which uses HTTP 402 and headers such as PAYMENT-REQUIRED, PAYMENT-SIGNATURE, and PAYMENT-RESPONSE. Do not implement MCP payment signaling as though it were only an HTTP-header exchange. Cloudflare’s paid MCP tools guide describes the integration, and the x402 MCP transport specification defines the MCP response requirements.
Build the server with the documented pattern
1. Create an MCP server
Use the MCP server implementation shown in the Agents SDK example. Then pass the server and x402 configuration to withX402(server, config).
#1 Best Overall
2. Configure the payment network and recipient
The Cloudflare example uses network: "eip155:84532", a recipient address, and facilitator: { url: "https://x402.org/facilitator" }. The network identifier is for Base Sepolia, and the recipient is an Ethereum address. Treat the example’s recipient and facilitator configuration as demonstration values, not production defaults. The Agents SDK example labels its client signing secret CLIENT_TEST_PK as test-only.
3. Register paid tools
Register a tool with paidTool(name, description, priceUSD, inputShape, outputShape, handler). The example uses a raw Zod shape for the input and output schemas; this API does not accept flexible AI SDK schema adapters. Its $0.01 price is illustrative, not a recommended rate.

- What's Included: This server organizer comes with multiple open and zippered pockets to store money, receipts, tips, etc. Clear sleeves are perfect for keeping menus or special lists while serving. Available in a variety of colors, allowing you to express yourself even when in uniform
4. Keep free tools separate where useful
A server can expose both paid and free tools. The example pairs a paid square tool with a free echo tool, so payment is required only for the tool configured as paid.
5. Add a client deliberately
For an MCP client, Cloudflare demonstrates withX402Client and an optional human payment-confirmation flow. Decide explicitly whether a person must approve each payment; the client should not silently sign on the user’s behalf without the product’s intended approval policy. Cloudflare’s guide covers the client integration.

Implement the MCP payment and retry exchange
- Call the paid tool without payment. The server responds with a tool result marked
isError: trueand includesPaymentRequiredinformation. - Return both required representations. Include the payment-required object in
structuredContentand include a JSON encoding of that same object incontent[0].text. The x402 MCP specification says servers must provide it in both formats. Clients should preferstructuredContentwhen present and parse the text representation as a fallback. - Retry with payment metadata. After creating the payment payload, the client retries the tool call with the payload in request
_meta["x402/payment"]. - Verify, execute, and settle. The server verifies the payment, executes the tool, and settles the transaction. On success, the tool result includes settlement information in
_meta["x402/payment-response"]. - Report settlement failure as an error. If the tool ran but settlement did not succeed, return an error rather than presenting the tool result as a successful paid call.
Keeping the two payment-required representations consistent matters for clients that use different parsing paths. The format and retry details are defined in the x402 MCP transport specification.
Choose a scheme, network, and facilitator for production
Pick the payment scheme
Cloudflare’s overview describes exact as a fixed token amount. The upto scheme authorizes payment up to a maximum, with the actual amount determined at settlement based on resource consumption. Choose based on how the tool is priced; support depends on the scheme/network combination and the components you use.

Confirm network and token support end to end
Cloudflare’s overview lists Base, Ethereum, Polygon, Optimism, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Solana, Aptos, Stellar, and Sui among supported networks. That list does not guarantee that every scheme, token, SDK, or facilitator supports every combination. Confirm the exact network and scheme with your chosen integration and facilitator before launch. For testing, Cloudflare calls out Base Sepolia and test USDC from the Circle Faucet; the example’s eip155:84532 setting is a test-network configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSelect how verification and settlement will work
A facilitator can verify payment payloads and submit transactions for settlement, reducing the blockchain work the resource server handles directly. Cloudflare describes a facilitator as optional but recommended. The example uses the public x402.org facilitator, but the x402 Foundation cautions against assuming that it is the default production path for mainnet EVM routes. For production, choose a facilitator that supports the intended network, operate one yourself, or self-facilitate. Check provider availability, supported scheme/network pair, operational behavior, and any required credentials. See the x402 Foundation repository’s production guidance.

What the example does not establish
The official example is a Base Sepolia demonstration, and its signing secret is explicitly test-only. The cited material does not establish a complete deployment runbook for this specific server, including current Wrangler configuration, production secret storage, or a production launch checklist. Consult current Cloudflare Workers deployment guidance and your chosen facilitator’s network-specific production documentation for those steps; do not treat the example configuration as production-ready.
