To combine videos in a chosen order, create a text file with one FFmpeg concat-demuxer file entry per clip, then run FFmpeg with that list. The quick -c copy method works only when the files have compatible streams; if they differ, normalize them or use the concat filter and re-encode. For a typical YouTube upload, MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is a practical target.
1. Put the videos in the order you want
The entries in the playlist determine playback order; do not rely on how your file manager or shell happens to list a directory. Give clips sortable names, such as 01_intro.mp4, 02_demo.mp4, and 03_end.mp4, then inspect the list before encoding.
2. Create the concat playlist
In a simple directory with portable filenames, create playlist.txt containing one relative filename per line:

file '03_end.mp4'You can include the optional header shown below. It is useful when explicitly identifying the file as an ffconcat script:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy combined.mp4-f concat selects the concat demuxer, -i supplies its playlist, and -c copy copies encoded streams rather than re-encoding them. The demuxer processes files in sequence and adjusts timestamps. The FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation says: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Stream copy does not make mismatched inputs compatible.
Path safety
-safe 0 permits paths that the safe-path default may reject. Use it only with a playlist you control, since it relaxes path checks. For a script containing only safe relative names, try -safe 1, the default, instead. Relative paths are resolved in relation to the working directory used to run FFmpeg. Use correctly quoted paths if filenames contain spaces or punctuation, and avoid casually running a playlist that points to external or untrusted files.

3. Decide whether stream copy is suitable
Compare the inputs before choosing how to join them. The concat demuxer relies on matching streams and stream parameters; similar-looking filenames or extensions do not prove compatibility. Duration metadata also matters: FFmpeg warns that inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts.

FFmpeg’s FAQ on joining video files recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. With that route, map the inputs in order and make their video and audio properties compatible in the filter graph. There is no single filter command that safely covers every mixture of codecs, dimensions, frame rates, time bases, and audio layouts.
4. Re-encode for a YouTube-oriented upload when needed
If your sources are already aligned in resolution, frame rate, and audio layout, this command is an illustrative starting point for a new MP4 encode:

Mixed sources may require preprocessing or explicit per-stream filters before encoding. -crf 18 is a quality-oriented example, not a guaranteed bitrate or file size; the resulting size depends on the material.

For SDR, YouTube recommends BT.709 and gives these reference video bitrates:

These are YouTube recommendations, not universal minimum requirements. The guidance gives common frame rates of 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps, while accepting other rates. Its video format guidance recommends retaining the native frame rate and aspect ratio. YouTube’s player adapts to the uploaded aspect ratio, so do not stretch footage just to force it to 16:9.

5. Inspect the combined file before uploading
- Play the beginning and each join; listen for gaps and check for black frames or abrupt transitions.
- Check that audio remains in sync after each boundary.
- Confirm the output’s dimensions, duration, and frame rate match your intent.
- If there are glitches, recheck stream compatibility and duration metadata before trying another copy operation.
6. Troubleshoot common problems
FFmpeg rejects a path as unsafe
Use safe relative filenames where possible. If you need a path rejected by the default checks, use -safe 0 only for a playlist you created and trust.
The output has glitches, black frames, audio gaps, or fails
Compare the files’ codecs, stream counts and layouts, time bases, and durations. The concat demuxer requires matching streams, and inaccurate duration values can introduce artifacts. Normalize differing sources or use a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes them.

Write each entry explicitly in the desired order and inspect the playlist. Directory enumeration and shell wildcard ordering are not a reliable cross-platform ordering method.

The job takes longer than expected or the file is large
Stream copy avoids a new encode only for compatible inputs. Re-encoding requires additional computation and can change both quality and output size; there is no fixed runtime or size that applies to every set of clips.
Higher YouTube quality options are not available immediately
YouTube says higher-quality versions can take longer to process. The guidance does not establish a fixed processing time, so check again later rather than assuming the upload failed.
