Build a text playlist, make sure its videos have compatible audio and video streams, then have FFmpeg repeat the playlist and send it to YouTube Live. That creates a looping broadcast, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service: the computer or server, FFmpeg process, internet connection, and YouTube ingest must all stay available. Test the complete setup in YouTube Studio before treating it as a permanent channel.

What you need before you start

  • FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can stay powered on and connected for the intended broadcast.
  • Animated fairy-tale videos, narration, music, and artwork that you are authorized to stream publicly and, if applicable, archive.
  • A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, plus the stream’s server URL and stream key.
  • Enough sustained upload capacity for your selected video bitrate. YouTube recommends testing upload speed against the intended bitrate; its live encoder guidance also advises testing representative audio and motion.

This guide describes a file-based broadcast, not a camera stream. The example uses FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play listed files sequentially, and -stream_loop -1 to repeat the input indefinitely. The command is illustrative, not tested against your files or a universal preset. YouTube’s settings and bitrate guidance can change; the figures below reflect YouTube Help pages checked on October 3, 2026.

Prepare and inspect your fairy-tale videos

The concat demuxer works best when every file has the same stream layout and compatible stream parameters. Before building the playlist, compare each file’s video and audio stream count, codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rate, and audio layout. A collection of MP4s is not automatically compatible just because the filenames end in .mp4.

Choose a consistent output profile

Decide the resolution, frame rate, video codec, audio codec, and bitrate you want to send to YouTube. If the source files differ in relevant stream parameters, normalize them to a common profile first. That takes preparation and encoding time, but gives the demuxer a consistent sequence to read. If you need to combine files with re-encoding, FFmpeg’s concat filter is the documented alternative; the concat demuxer can avoid re-encoding when the stream parameters match. See the FFmpeg project’s concat demuxer and FAQ documentation for the distinctions.

Do not choose settings from the sample command by habit. YouTube’s live encoder table gives bitrate guidance by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For one specific example, YouTube’s current chart lists H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps with a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. That is YouTube guidance, not a guarantee of picture quality or a claim that every source should use those settings.

Make a playlist file

Save a plain-text or UTF-8 file named playlist.ffconcat in the same directory as the videos, or use suitable file paths. The header must be the first line exactly as shown for FFmpeg to recognize the format automatically:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'episode-01.mp4'
file 'episode-02.mp4'
file 'episode-03.mp4'

Each file line adds an item in play order. Use the actual filenames and keep paths valid from the directory where you run FFmpeg. If a name contains characters that complicate quoting, choose a path or filename that can be represented safely in the script rather than assuming every path will parse as intended.

The concat demuxer reads the files one after another and adjusts timestamps so each begins after the previous one. Its timeline depends on compatible streams and duration information. Incorrect duration metadata can cause timing artifacts or gaps, so listen and watch across file transitions during your test, not only at the beginning of the first video.

Start the repeating FFmpeg stream

Use this command shape after choosing settings that suit your source material and YouTube’s current encoder guidance:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -i playlist.ffconcat
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
  • -re paces the file input at its natural rate; without it, FFmpeg can read a file input as fast as possible.
  • -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. It does not restart a failed FFmpeg process or restore a broken connection.
  • -f concat -i playlist.ffconcat tells FFmpeg to read the playlist script as a concat-demuxer input.
  • -c:v libx264 selects H.264 video encoding, and -c:a aac selects AAC audio encoding for this example.
  • -b:v and -maxrate set example video-rate values; -bufsize sets the example rate-control buffer. The sample 5000 kbps value is not a universal recommendation and should not be copied blindly.
  • -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP. At 30 fps, that is a two-second interval. Change the GOP for your actual frame rate so the keyframe interval matches YouTube’s guidance.
  • -f flv selects the output format commonly used with RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Use the server URL and key provided for your stream in YouTube Studio.

YouTube currently lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection between your encoder and Google’s servers. The example uses H.264 and AAC; consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings table before choosing or changing codecs, bitrate, or frame rate.

Keep the stream key private

Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in a playlist, public script, tutorial, or log. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before relying on that stream configuration again. Follow the server URL format shown for your stream; do not assume every ingest URL uses the same path or that you should append the key in the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When FFmpeg starts sending, YouTube creates the watch page for the stream. Leave the Live Control Room open during initial setup so you can check its preview and stream-health messages.

Test before making the stream permanent

  1. Run the full playlist, not just one clip. Confirm that FFmpeg can open every listed file and that it reaches the later entries.
  2. Watch transitions. Check for a black frame, unexpected pause, abrupt audio change, missing audio, or timing gap at the joins.
  3. Use representative content. Test a section with movement, a section with quiet or no narration, and the loudest or busiest material you intend to air. YouTube advises testing representative audio and motion.
  4. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Resolve ingest or encoder warnings before announcing a continuous broadcast.
  5. Test upload capacity. YouTube recommends running a speed test against the intended upload bitrate. Leave operating headroom rather than planning around a connection that only just reaches the selected bitrate.
  6. Let the test run long enough to expose operational issues. Confirm that the host stays on, the process remains active, and the connection stays healthy. A successful short test does not establish that the setup will run continuously.

Plan for failures and long-running broadcasts

An infinite playlist loop is only an input behavior. FFmpeg can exit, the host can reboot, power or networking can fail, and YouTube ingest can become unhealthy. Monitor FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health, and choose a restart strategy suitable for your own computer or server. A restart strategy should account for how you will notice a failure, restart the process, and confirm that YouTube is receiving video again; the loop option alone handles none of those jobs.

Choose a local host or rented compute

A local computer gives you direct access to files and control of the encoding environment, but it must remain powered, connected, and operational. A mini PC may be an option, but suitability depends on resolution, encoding choice, and the actual workload; no particular model or performance level is established here. Rented compute can move the process off your home machine, but you still have to maintain an always-available remote host and transfer the media to it. No cost or reliability benchmark is available for comparing these approaches, so estimate them using your own hardware, electricity, hosting, storage, and network costs.

Decide how to handle YouTube archives

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that duration, so do not depend on YouTube’s automatic archive behavior to preserve a complete replay of it. If a full replay matters, keep a separate local recording or run shorter scheduled sessions with planned transitions. Shorter sessions create operational work: you need to plan and manage the changeovers rather than assuming a single permanent session will provide a complete archive.

Clear rights and set the audience correctly

A fairy tale may be old, but a particular adaptation, animation, narration, illustration, music recording, or soundtrack may still be protected. Confirm that you have the rights needed for public live streaming and for any replay you intend to keep. A license to use third-party material does not necessarily prevent an automated live interruption: YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party matches, and for licensed third-party content it advises asking the owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist where applicable.

YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Do not treat the fact that material is described as a fairy tale, or that a video is already online, as proof that your channel may rebroadcast it.

Animated fairy tales can be intended for children, families, or a general audience. Set the audience designation and follow YouTube’s current audience and content policies based on the actual videos and who they are intended for; animation alone does not establish a single audience classification.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
FFmpeg cannot open the playlist The header is missing or misspelled, is not the first line, or a listed path is invalid. Check that the first line is exactly ffconcat version 1.0; verify each filename and path from the directory where FFmpeg runs.
The sequence stops, glitches, or has a gap at a join Files have incompatible stream layouts or inaccurate duration metadata. Compare stream count, codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rate, and audio layout. Normalize mismatched files to one profile or use the concat filter when re-encoding is needed; inspect duration metadata and test the transition.
Video or audio is missing or rejected by ingest The chosen codec, pixel format, frame rate, audio settings, or output format may not match the intended ingest configuration. Check FFmpeg’s error output and the Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, then compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s current guidance. The sample command is not a universal profile.
YouTube receives an unstable or unhealthy stream The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the encoder host may be under strain. Run YouTube’s recommended upload speed test against the intended bitrate, inspect the stream-health status, and reduce or adjust settings to a supported profile if the connection cannot sustain them.
The stream ends and does not resume FFmpeg exited, the host rebooted, or the connection or ingest failed; -stream_loop -1 only repeats an available input. Inspect the FFmpeg log and host/network state, restart the process using your operational plan, and verify the preview and health status in YouTube Studio.
Video is interrupted despite having a license YouTube detected a third-party match, and the channel may not be on the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist where applicable. Contact the rights owner about allowlisting, and confirm that your permission covers the intended live stream and archive.
A complete 24/7 replay is unavailable YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Keep a separate local recording if a complete replay matters, or schedule shorter sessions with planned transitions.
