To make a death burst appear where an enemy dies in GDevelop, create a Particle Emitter from that enemy’s death event using the enemy’s X and Y coordinates. Mark each enemy’s death as started before creating the effect so the event runs once per enemy, then tune the particle look and decide how the emitter will be removed.

Choose a starting point for the effect

You can adapt an existing effect or build a focused emitter in your project. GDevelop’s Space Shooter visual-effects tutorial demonstrates creating explosion objects in an enemy-death event at the enemy’s X and Y coordinates. It also shows reusing explosion objects from the sample project and copying their image assets into another game.

For more examples to inspect and adapt, open the official Particle Effects Demo, an editable project containing effects such as fire, magic, snow, and rune spells. Alternatively, add a Particle Emitter directly to your project and shape the death burst there. GDevelop describes its particle system as a 2D emitter; configurable properties include color, size, speed, and lifetime. Its Academy also lists a Particle Emitters tutorial on emitter options and examples.

Starting route Useful when Trade-off
Adapt the Particle Effects Demo You want to inspect varied, editable effects and use one as a design starting point. Copy any required image assets when transferring an effect to your own project.
Build an emitter in your game You want direct control over a specific enemy-death burst. You will need to iterate on its appearance and set up its event and cleanup logic.

Set up a Particle Emitter object

  1. Add a Particle Emitter object to the game and give it a clear name, such as EnemyDeathEmitter.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
    • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  2. Start with a simple burst that is easy to see while testing. Change one visual property at a time so you can tell what each adjustment does.

  3. If you adapt an effect that uses a graphic texture, include that image asset when moving the effect or sample object into your project.

There is no universal set of “pro” particle values in the cited GDevelop materials. A burst that reads well depends on the game’s art, background, and camera scale; tune it in the scene where players will see it.

Trigger the burst once for the enemy that died

Use your game’s actual health or death condition. In the event that detects an enemy’s death, first set a per-enemy state—an object variable such as DeathStarted—then create the emitter at that enemy’s position. GDevelop’s official example uses Enemies.X() and Enemies.Y() as the coordinates for its explosion objects. Use the equivalent expressions for your enemy object, and check whether its origin or visual center matches the desired effect position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A conceptual event sequence is:

  1. Condition: Select an enemy whose health is at or below zero and whose DeathStarted state is false.

  2. Action: Set that enemy’s DeathStarted state to true.

This sequence is a recipe to adapt, not a fixed event layout for every project. GDevelop evaluates event conditions and actions in order, and object conditions determine which instances later actions affect. See the official events documentation when checking event order and object selection.

For multiple enemy instances, keep the death state on each instance. A GDevelop community answer recommends a per-enemy death variable and per-object iteration so one enemy’s death does not repeatedly trigger effects for other enemies; treat that as community guidance and verify the behavior in your project. Avoid assuming one global “Trigger once” condition expresses the intended behavior for several enemies.

  • Color: Choose a hue that remains visible against the background and fits the game’s damage or destruction style.
  • Size: Check readability at the camera scale players will see, not only while zoomed in within the editor.
  • Speed and direction: Use the emitter’s movement settings to distinguish a sharp outward burst from a soft poof or directional breakup.
  • Lifetime: Keep particles visible long enough to read, but not so long that repeated combat effects clutter the scene.

Make a change, preview it, and then adjust the next property. The available sources do not establish a single best numeric configuration for every art style.

Choose how the emitter and enemy end

Decide whether the enemy disappears immediately, leaves a corpse, or remains briefly while the particles play. If the enemy is deleted, make sure the effect can finish independently instead of being removed with it.

A community discussion describes two possible cleanup approaches: use a finite particle supply with a delete-when-empty option, or use a timer. Check the exact options available in your installed GDevelop version and test the result, especially if the effect should leave a trail. The appropriate cleanup depends on whether you want a short burst or continuing emission.

Preview and troubleshoot the event

Test the effect in the running game at its intended scale and background. Include these cases:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • One enemy dies and produces one burst at its position.
  • Enemies die at different scene positions, and each burst follows the correct enemy.
  • Several enemies die close together, with one effect per enemy.
  • The emitter disappears after its particles finish, without cutting off the burst.
  • The effect remains correctly placed if the enemy’s origin is not at its visual center.

If an effect fires repeatedly, inspect the per-enemy death state and whether the death event continues to match the same enemy on later frames. If only one enemy receives an effect, review event order and object picking: conditions determine which instances are selected for subsequent actions. Community guidance on per-object iteration is a useful lead, but validate it against the event structure in your project.

The cited GDevelop materials establish the workflow and available controls; they do not provide measured performance costs or a universal optimal particle count.
