Build the MCP server and the Android UI renderer as separate parts of one application: a Kotlin server exposes narrowly scoped MCP tools, resources, or prompts, while the Android app validates a constrained, versioned UI model and renders it with Jetpack Compose. This guide assumes a remote Ktor-hosted server and an Android app that receives the model through an explicit application integration. The Android renderer does not thereby become an MCP server, and the Android documentation does not require the MCP server to run on the device.

Choose the topology before you implement either side

There are two distinct responsibilities to connect. The MCP server communicates with an MCP client using a supported transport. The Android application consumes structured UI data, turns it into render state, displays native Compose components, and routes user actions back into application logic. Decide how those responsibilities exchange data; MCP transport alone does not define how an Android screen receives a UI model.

This article uses a remote Ktor server as the example deployment. In a real system, identify the MCP client, Kotlin server, Android app, and any agent or backend as separate components. Specify which component produces the UI model, which boundary delivers it to Android, and where user actions go. For a developer tool whose MCP client launches a local process, STDIO may be more appropriate than a remote server.

Choose a UI contract the app can safely render

Do not let a server response select arbitrary code or Compose functions. Define a small catalog of allowed components, properties, and actions, then validate incoming data against that contract before it changes render state. The catalog is the boundary between data and native UI: a payload can request a supported component with validated properties, but it cannot introduce an unrestricted view implementation.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Use Android’s A2UI renderer or define a constrained schema

Android’s A2UI renderer is an option when its protocol and catalog meet the app’s needs. Android documents renderer support for A2UI specification version 0.9.1, with schema validation, reactive updates, and graceful handling of component errors. Check the current documentation and compatibility before adopting that version in a new project.

The documented renderer is divided into model and engine, runtime, UI APIs, and catalog implementations. Its listed artifact families include androidx.a2ui:a2ui-model, androidx.a2ui:a2ui-engine, androidx.a2ui.compose:compose-runtime, androidx.a2ui.compose:compose-ui, and a Material 3 basic catalog artifact. These names identify the documented families, not a complete, verified dependency set: confirm artifact availability, versions, and compatibility before pinning Gradle dependencies.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

If A2UI is not the right fit, define your own constrained schema and document its version, component set, property types, validation rules, and action semantics. The reviewed Android documentation establishes A2UI as an option; it does not establish that it is superior to every custom schema or cover every alternative.

Specify invalid, loading, and action states

  • Validate the schema version and required fields before applying an update.
  • Define what the screen shows while data is loading and when a payload or component is invalid.
  • Reject or safely handle unsupported components and properties rather than trying to interpret them as executable UI.
  • Give actions explicit names and typed inputs, and define how the Android app maps them to application logic.
  • Keep business logic and external data access outside composables; transform application data into UI state before rendering it.

Build the MCP server around the client workflow

The Kotlin MCP SDK’s server role is to expose MCP features and manage sessions attached to a transport. Register only the feature types the client needs. A tool is a suitable boundary for a narrowly scoped operation; a resource can expose material a client should read; a prompt belongs only where it supports a concrete workflow. Keep these server handlers separate from Compose code. If a tool result ultimately affects a screen, pass it through an explicit application boundary that produces a versioned UI model.

Design tools with explicit inputs

For each tool, choose a specific name, describe its purpose for the client, and define an object input schema. Keep the operation narrow enough that its allowed inputs and expected result are clear. Do not treat a tool’s description as validation: validate arguments and downstream data in the server, and validate the resulting UI model again at the Android boundary.

The Kotlin SDK server module documents registration methods for tools, prompts, and resources, including addTool, addPrompt, and addResource. Its runtime handles initialization and feature listing or retrieval according to the server’s registrations and declared capabilities. Declare only the capabilities the server actually provides so the client sees an accurate feature surface.

Select a transport that matches where the server runs

Transport Documented option When it fits
STDIO Kotlin MCP SDK STDIO transport A local process launched by a developer tool or CLI-style MCP client.
SSE with POST back-channel Ktor server transport documented by the Kotlin MCP SDK A Ktor-hosted server when the intended client and deployment support this transport.
WebSocket Ktor WebSocket hosting documented by the Kotlin MCP SDK A Ktor-hosted server when the intended client and deployment support WebSocket transport.

These are distinct hosting choices, not interchangeable settings. Check the target MCP client’s transport support and configure that client for the server you actually deploy. The Kotlin SDK API pages cited in the documentation show version 0.15.0; that is not, by itself, confirmation of the latest release. Verify the current SDK release and compatibility before choosing a dependency version.

Protect a remotely reachable Ktor route

For the Ktor SSE route, the SDK API documents DNS rebinding protection enabled by default, host and origin allowlist configuration, and a maximum incoming request body size of 4 MiB by default. Its route documentation notes that custom host configuration changes origin-validation behavior. Keep those defaults in view when configuring the route, and understand the effect before overriding host or origin checks.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Those route options are not a complete authentication or access-control policy. Decide how clients are authenticated, what they may invoke, how credentials are handled, and how the service is exposed in the actual deployment. Apply request-size and input validation to the application boundary as well; a syntactically valid MCP request does not guarantee that its contents are safe or renderable.

Render validated state with Compose

Follow a one-way UI flow: consume application data, transform it into renderable state, render that state, and reflect user input back into application state or logic. Compose is Android’s recommended UI toolkit in the cited UI-layer guidance. A renderer should turn the validated catalog model into native components; application code should own data access and the effects of user actions.

For a legacy or SDK view without a Compose equivalent, Android documents AndroidView as an interoperability route. Prefer a Compose implementation when practical rather than making view interop the default for a dynamic renderer.

Implementation sequence

  1. Draw the process boundary. Record which MCP client connects to the Kotlin server, where the Android app gets UI data, and how user actions return to application logic.
  2. Choose and version the UI contract. Select the documented A2UI renderer and catalog if they fit, or define a limited custom schema. Write down supported components, properties, actions, validation, and error behavior.
  3. Verify dependencies. Check current artifact coordinates, versions, and compatibility for the Android renderer and Kotlin MCP SDK. Do not infer a complete compatible build from the documented artifact-family names or an API page’s version label.
  4. Implement the server feature surface. Create the Kotlin SDK server, declare the capabilities it needs, and register only the necessary tools, resources, or prompts. Give tools precise descriptions and object input schemas.
  5. Connect one transport end to end. For the remote Ktor topology used here, select either documented Ktor SSE with POST back-channel or WebSocket hosting based on client support. Configure the matching client and route; for a local launched process, use STDIO instead.
  6. Validate before rendering. Check incoming model version and shape, resolve only catalog-approved components, and produce defined loading and error states. Route user actions through the app’s explicit logic rather than interpreting them as arbitrary server commands.
  7. Review exposure and failure paths. Set host and origin policy deliberately, add deployment-appropriate authentication and access controls, enforce input validation, and test malformed payloads, unsupported components, and failed action handling.
