You can use OpenAI Codex to help write and change an Android app, but Codex is not the Android development environment. Start with Android Studio and its Android build tools, ask Codex to make a small, specific change in your project, then build and run the app in an emulator or on a device to check the result.

What you need—and what each tool does

Think of the workflow as three parts: the project files Codex can work on, Android’s tools for building the app, and an emulator or device for checking how it behaves.

  • Codex: OpenAI describes Codex CLI as a terminal tool for inspecting, editing, and running code in a local repository. It can help with project code, but it does not replace Android Studio or Android’s build system. See the Codex CLI quickstart.
  • Android Studio and build tools: Use Android Studio to create and manage an Android project, and Android’s build tooling to compile and configure it. See Android Studio and app tools and Configure your build.
  • Emulator or device: Run the app in an Android Emulator virtual device or on a physical Android device to inspect its behavior. A successful build alone does not confirm that the screen or interactions work as you intended. See Run apps on the Android Emulator.

Build an Android app with Codex: step by step

1. Install Android Studio and create a starter project

Follow the current Android Studio installation instructions, then create a minimal Android project in the IDE. Templates, releases, and machine requirements can change, so use the live Android Developers page rather than relying on a version number or setup requirement from an older guide.

At this point, Android Studio provides the Android-specific project and tooling environment. Codex will be a coding agent that can work with the project’s files.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

2. Build and run the untouched starter app

Before asking Codex to add a feature, build and run the starter project using your installed Android tooling. This establishes a working baseline: if setup or the initial build fails, you can address that before introducing code changes. Android’s build configuration guide explains the build system, and its emulator guide covers running an app on a virtual device.

3. Open the project in Codex and ask for one focused task

Use a Codex client that can work with your project repository. In the CLI workflow, OpenAI’s quickstart describes installing and signing in, opening the project directory, and describing the task. Keep the first request narrow: name the feature, the screen, the expected behavior, and any constraints. You can ask Codex to inspect the existing structure and propose a small plan before it edits anything.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

For example, you could ask:

Inspect this Android project and explain how its starter screen is structured. Then propose the smallest change to add a button that increments a visible counter. Do not edit files until you explain the plan.

This is an example prompt, not a required command or a quoted instruction from OpenAI. For an ordinary Android app that does not call the OpenAI API, you do not need an OpenAI API key or the OpenAI Developers plugin just to use Codex on the project. The plugin is a separate option described in OpenAI’s plugin documentation.

4. Review the edits before building

Read the changes Codex proposes or makes, inspect the diff, and ask it to explain unfamiliar code. Keep a Git checkpoint or commit before meaningful agent work and another after changes you want to preserve; OpenAI’s CLI quickstart recommends checkpoints around a task so you can revert if necessary. Reviewing the diff helps you catch changes outside the intended feature before you move on.

5. Build, run, and check the behavior

Use Android’s build tooling to compile the project, then launch it in the Android Emulator or on a device. Check the actual screen and interaction—for the counter example, confirm that tapping the button changes the visible count. If the app behaves differently from the request, describe what you observed and ask Codex for one focused correction. Review that diff and repeat the build-and-run check.

Emulator or physical device?

The emulator runs the app on a virtual Android device and is useful for development checks without relying on a physical handset. A physical device lets you inspect the app on real hardware. The right target depends on what you need to check and what is convenient for your setup.

Android’s emulator documentation covers virtual-device use. Device-specific connection steps and requirements can vary; consult current Android instructions for your device rather than assuming a universal setup procedure.

What this workflow does not guarantee

Codex can assist with code, but the workflow still depends on Android Studio and Android’s build and runtime tools to create and check the app. A successful build is not proof that the app’s UI behaves correctly, which is why running it matters. The official documentation supports this tool workflow; it does not establish that a particular app will build successfully or prescribe one universally best language or architecture.

This guide focuses on creating, changing, building, and checking a beginner project. It does not cover exact current SDK versions, app-store publishing procedures, or review requirements; consult the relevant current Android documentation if you move on to those tasks.
