You can build and test an Alexa skill with Node.js without owning an Echo. Start a new project with ASK SDK v2, write request handlers for the Alexa requests your skill supports, then connect the skill to an endpoint such as AWS Lambda. You can test it in the Alexa developer console simulator or in Visual Studio Code.
What you need to build an Alexa skill with Node.js
- Node.js 16 or later for the ASK SDK v2 setup documented by Amazon.
- npm to install the SDK and manage project dependencies.
- An Amazon developer account to configure the skill in the Alexa developer console.
- An endpoint for the skill, commonly an AWS Lambda function. Amazon also documents HTTPS web-service endpoints as an option.
Amazon describes the ASK SDKs as software tools and libraries that provide programmatic access to Alexa features. For a new Node.js skill, use ASK SDK v2 rather than starting with the older alexa-sdk package. Amazon’s ASK SDK overview introduces the SDK, while its Node.js setup guide specifies Node.js 16 or above.
How an Alexa skill handles a request
When a user speaks to Alexa, the Alexa service sends your skill an HTTPS POST containing a JSON request. The SDK routes that request through your code. A handler receives a HandlerInput object and decides what response to return; the SDK also supports request and response interceptors and error handlers. Node.js handles JSON natively in this SDK workflow. See Amazon’s request-handling documentation.
A skill’s interaction model defines the intents it recognizes and sample utterances users can say. For example, a weather skill might define an intent for asking about the weather, then have a request handler produce the appropriate response. The developer console is where you configure this model. Amazon’s developer console documentation explains the interaction model and available backend choices.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Create the Node.js project and add the SDK
Amazon’s first-skill tutorial uses an empty npm project, SDK installation, request handlers, packaging, Lambda deployment, and simulator testing. The following is the basic project setup; the exact handlers depend on the intents your skill defines.
- Create a project directory and initialize it with
npm init. - Install the standard SDK distribution by running
npm install --save ask-sdk. - Add your entry point and handlers. In the tutorial, the skill’s code includes an
index.jsentry point. Create handlers for the requests and intents in your interaction model, and use the SDK’s skill builder to assemble them.
For modular projects, Amazon documents installing ask-sdk-model and ask-sdk-core separately. Optional persistence adapters are available for services such as DynamoDB or S3. The SkillBuilder or SkillBuilders abstraction helps construct a skill for Lambda integration; custom skill builders are available when you need additional configuration. See the SDK setup guide and the skill builder documentation.

Deploy the skill to AWS Lambda
Lambda is a common way to host a Node.js skill, though Amazon also supports an HTTPS web-service backend. In the tutorial’s Lambda workflow, package the contents of the code directory—including index.js, package.json, and node_modules—as a ZIP file and upload it to a Node.js Lambda function. Then copy the function ARN into the skill endpoint configuration in the Alexa developer console. Follow Amazon’s first-skill tutorial for the end-to-end setup.
In the developer console, configure the interaction model so the skill recognizes the intents and sample utterances your handlers support, then set the endpoint to your Lambda function or HTTPS service. The endpoint and the interaction model serve different purposes: the model defines what Alexa should recognize, while the endpoint is where Alexa sends the resulting request.

- Meet Echo Dot Max: Experience rich room-filling sound that automatically adapts to your space and fine-tunes playback. Features a built-in smart home hub and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.
- Music to your ears: With nearly 3x the bass versus Echo Dot (2022 release), it fits beautifully in any space, delivering your personal sound stage with deep bass and enhanced clarity. Listen to streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and SiriusXM. Encore!
- Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound. Pair your Echo Dot Max with compatible Fire TV devices to create a home theater system that brings scenes to life.
- Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Test without an Echo
A physical Alexa-enabled device is optional. Use the Alexa Simulator in the developer console or test from Visual Studio Code with the ASK Toolkit. Amazon also supports testing on an Alexa-enabled device when you want a physical voice interaction. The simulator and VS Code options are documented in Amazon’s skill-testing guide.
Choose a workflow and SDK package
Amazon’s ASK toolset includes the developer console, Alexa-hosted skills, ASK Toolkit for VS Code, ASK SDKs, ASK CLI, Skill Management API, and AWS tools. Pick the authoring and hosting combination that matches your workflow rather than treating a physical device as a prerequisite.

| Decision | Options | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | AWS Lambda or another HTTPS endpoint | Lambda is the tutorial’s deployment path; the console documentation also describes HTTPS web-service backends. |
| Authoring | Developer console, VS Code, or ASK CLI | The console configures the skill and interaction model; VS Code and the CLI provide development workflows. |
| SDK packaging | ask-sdk or modular packages |
Use the standard distribution for a straightforward setup, or use ask-sdk-model and ask-sdk-core when you want modular dependencies. |
| Testing | Developer console simulator, VS Code, or an Alexa device | The first two do not require a physical device; a device is an additional testing route. |
| Project age | New ASK SDK v2 project or older alexa-sdk project |
Amazon recommends v2 for new skills. Existing v1 projects can use the v1 adapter while migrating handlers to v2 style. |
Node.js version requirements: SDK versus CLI
Keep the SDK and CLI prerequisites distinct. Amazon’s ASK SDK v2 setup guide requires Node.js 16 or above. The ASK CLI quick start lists Node.js 14 or higher and recommends the current release or active LTS. If you are using both, meet the stricter SDK requirement by installing Node.js 16 or later. The CLI requirement is documented separately in Amazon’s ASK CLI quick start.
Migrate an older Node.js skill
If your existing project uses the older alexa-sdk package, migration does not require pretending it is already a v2 project. Amazon documents a v1 adapter that can support a transition while you move handlers to the v2 style. For a new skill, start directly with ASK SDK v2. See Amazon’s migration guidance.
