To make a wooden mechanical keyboard that fits and works, choose the layout, PCB, plate and mounting design first; then design the case around their real dimensions and connection points. You can machine the case yourself, commission one, or start with a wooden barebones kit. The right route depends on the exact board you want—not on a universally best wood or finish.
Choose the keyboard layout and compatible parts first
A wooden case is not a one-size-fits-all shell. Its size and internal geometry must match the keyboard layout, PCB, mounting plate and mounting approach. As Custom KBD puts it, “Your case size will dictate the choice of keyboard layout, PCB and associated mounting plate.” Custom KBD’s guide to getting started with custom keyboards identifies the case, PCB, stabilizers, mounting plate, switches and keycaps as the core components.
Treat those items as a compatibility system: select the layout and PCB, confirm the compatible plate and stabilizers, and only then settle the case dimensions. Before drawing or cutting the case, check the actual components’ dimensions, mounting points and planned cable and connector position. In particular, locate the USB port so the finished case opening lines up with it.
Choose a route to the wooden case

A kit can simplify parts matching, while a custom build offers more control over the case geometry. A commission avoids doing the case fabrication yourself, but only if the maker can accommodate your exact board. Listings, availability and service terms can change, so confirm them with the seller before committing.

Design and fabricate the case
The documented CNC build is one example of a high-finish approach, not a required recipe. Its maker modelled the case, prepared it for CNC machining, cut soft maple and oak, drilled a USB-C access opening, sanded and lacquered the wood, and used magnets to join sections. It does not establish that CNC, those wood species or lacquer are best for every design.
For your own project, translate the selected components into case geometry before fabrication. The relevant details include the PCB and plate outline, mounting points, space for stabilizers and switches, and the connector’s location. Choose a fabrication method that can produce those features accurately; the available project documents CNC work but does not compare it with hand-tool methods.

After fabrication, fit the actual components before treating the case as finished. The example’s use of magnets is specific to its design, not a universal joining method. Sanding and lacquer were also choices in that project; the evidence does not compare finishes or establish a tested durability, protection or curing-time recommendation.

A typical build uses the case, compatible PCB and plate, switches, stabilizers, keycaps and a USB cable. A step-by-step guide also lists a screwdriver and tweezers among assembly tools. See the keyboard build guide. Exact order and mounting details vary, so follow the instructions for your PCB or kit rather than assuming every board assembles the same way.

- Check the kit contents and fit. Confirm that the PCB and plate match your layout and case, and identify which stabilizers, switches, keycaps and cable are included.
- Prepare the case and plate. Make sure the mounting points and connector opening align with the chosen PCB and plate before installing the electronics.
- Install stabilizers and switches as directed. Use the procedure supplied for your selected board; designs differ.
- Connect and test the board. Confirm that the cable reaches the port opening and that the assembly behaves as expected before final closure.
Whether soldering is needed depends on the PCB. The build guide says hot-swap keyboards do not require soldering switches; verify that the chosen PCB is hot-swap rather than assuming all kits are. A soldering iron may be needed for other board designs, but it is not universally required.

Tool needs follow the fabrication method and electronics. The documented case involved CNC equipment, drilling and sanding; assembly guidance names a screwdriver and tweezers, while a soldering iron is relevant only for boards that require soldering. Do not buy or prepare every tool on a generic list until you have selected the case method and PCB.

There is no established best wood, finish or acoustic result for wooden keyboards in the available evidence. Treat the maple-and-oak case and lacquer as a documented example rather than a performance recommendation. Choose materials and finishing steps to suit your design, and avoid assuming that a particular wood will produce a specific sound or feel.
