Build a strong team for Game of Thrones: Legends by matching Champions and their skills to the battle’s objective—not by chasing one lineup for every fight. Raid defense rewards survival and a planned payoff; dragon assaults demand that you read boss mechanics, time damage and healing, and manage stamina. Faction bonuses and Champion balance also change, so treat named teams as dated examples rather than permanent tier lists.
Start with the battle, not the Champion list
A squad is a system: Champions bring abilities and roles, gear supports them, and gem matches charge their skills. The official Game of Thrones: Legends overview describes collecting and upgrading Champions, equipping weapons and gear, and matching gems to activate abilities. When choosing a lineup, ask what it must survive, which abilities it needs to use, and how you will charge them in time.
- Raid defense: Build around the team’s defensive plan and the payoff it is trying to reach.
- Alliance Legendary Assault: Choose for the particular boss and encounter effects, including survival and damage timing.
- Progression: Favor a workable combination from the Champions you actually own and have upgraded over an idealized roster you cannot field.
Rarity alone does not answer whether a Champion belongs in a team. Compare candidates by their contribution to survival, skill timing, faction and leader effects, and the encounter’s needs.
Use factions as a tool, not a five-Champion rule
Zynga’s February 12, 2026 Faction Revamp announcement said the system would move from scaling bonuses for three, four, or five members to a flat bonus for three members, with improved leader abilities and initial support for Champions with two factions. The article said the changes would be live to all players after February 17, 2026. That design makes a three-member faction core a useful starting point while leaving room for two slots that better serve the battle.

However, that is not enough to establish every faction rule in force today. Zynga’s September 5, 2026 Broader Factions Update described further changes as work in progress and expected in late September; it did not confirm whether or how those plans went live. Check the in-game faction and leader descriptions, and current official updates, before committing resources on the assumption that announced plans are live mechanics.
Raid defense example: build toward Enrage
In an official post dated October 10, 2025, Zynga presented this Blacks lineup as a top Iron Throne Raid defense team at that time. It is a useful example of composition logic, not a universal current recommendation.

- Speed up key skills: Criston Cole or Khaleesi can accelerate stamina, helping Rhaenyra or Rhaenys use their skills more often.
- Add fury: The post highlights Epic Champions Rhaena, The Guardian Rook, and Crownlands Knight as fury sources that can help trigger Enrage.
- Support damaged Targaryens: Dragonstone Maester can add taunt and heal Targaryens who take damage.
The post called the lineup the highest defensive win-rate team at the top Iron Throne tier when published, but gave no numerical rate. That dated qualitative claim is not evidence that the team remains the strongest after later balance or faction changes.

Dragon assaults: adapt to the boss and turn cycle
Alliance Legendary Assault has mechanics that change what a good team needs to do. Zynga’s July 20, 2026 dragon design diary describes two effects across these boss encounters:
- Alliance Ramp: Bosses grow stronger as the battle progresses, increasing the cost of taking too long.
- Exhaustion: After a Champion uses a skill twice in one turn, that Champion can no longer gain stamina for the rest of that turn.
Viserion: use the sleep cycle to prepare
Viserion’s sleep cycle is a timing test. Attacking while he sleeps wakes him angrily and hurts the team. Use those turns to heal and prepare damage dealers instead of spending attacks into the awakening penalty. Zynga’s diary says the sleep period was shortened to two turns and that the fight includes ways to bypass the cycle.

The diary also identifies specific effect interactions: BRITTLE can prevent the rude awakening; RAID reduces Viserion’s DEF and Durability; and Viserion’s Claw Swipe removes BIRTHRIGHT. Read the active boss and global effects before choosing a squad, then decide whether your team can exploit those interactions and still manage healing and damage before Alliance Ramp makes the fight harder.
Compare teams by encounter fit
Zynga says each Alliance boss was designed with at least two playstyles it is explicitly weak to, while allowing room for experimentation. For candidates you can field, compare:

- Survival: Does it have the shields, healing, or other protection needed to last through the encounter?
- Damage timing: Can it prepare and deliver damage in the right window rather than attacking at the wrong moment?
- Skill and stamina use: Will its ability plan remain useful under Exhaustion and the encounter’s turn cycle?
A practical way to build toward a stronger roster
- Identify the mode and objective. Decide whether you are assembling Raid defense, handling ordinary progression, or facing an Alliance boss. A defensive Enrage plan is not automatically a dragon-boss plan.
- Read current rules in game. Check the Champions’ skills, leader effect, faction indicators, and the encounter’s boss and global effects. Treat announced faction changes as plans unless a current source or the game confirms them.
- Choose a core from your available Champions. Look for a leader and faction combination that helps the plan, then use remaining slots to address the actual fight’s needs.
- Set a skill and gem plan. Decide which abilities matter most, how you will charge them through gem matches, and when to save a turn for healing or preparation.
- Upgrade the lineup you can use. Collection and upgrading are central to the game loop. A coherent team built from owned, developed Champions is more actionable than a target lineup without a path to assemble it.
- Reassess after updates or a change of mode. Team balance and faction rules are live-service details. Recheck current official updates before treating a dated lineup as today’s best choice.
