Build a software testing career by learning testing fundamentals, gaining practical engineering fluency, and then choosing how AI fits your work: use generative AI to support testing, test AI-based products, or develop both skill sets. Certifications can provide structured study, but neither a credential nor AI knowledge guarantees a job.
Start with testing craft
Testing is a way to reduce product risk through investigation, thoughtful test design, clear communication, and timely feedback. A useful starting point is to practice on a real or sample application and make your reasoning visible.
Practice the work, not just the terminology
For a small application, identify who uses it and what could go wrong. Record assumptions, risks, test ideas, observed results, defects, and trade-offs. Try ordinary flows as well as boundary conditions and failure cases. When you report a defect, include steps to reproduce it, expected and actual behavior, and enough context for someone else to investigate.
This is practical guidance, not a universal hiring checklist. The official certification information discussed below does not establish one required entry-level curriculum or a single route into testing.

Build engineering fluency that fits your target work
Learn to work comfortably with the development workflow and test automation used in the kinds of roles you want. Useful practice can include reading requirements and logs, understanding how changes are reviewed and released, and automating a meaningful test where it makes sense. The sources cited here do not compare employer demand for programming languages or frameworks, so there is no defensible universal language or tool recommendation.
You do not have to treat coding as an all-or-nothing gate. Your next learning step should reflect the work you want to do: strengthen automation and technical investigation if those are part of your target roles, while continuing to build test analysis and communication skills.
Choose an AI skill path based on the work
ISTQB distinguishes testing AI-based systems from using generative AI in software testing. These paths can overlap, but one does not automatically teach the other.

The CT-GenAI syllabus covers using generative AI across test analysis, design, automation, reporting, infrastructure, and team processes. It also addresses prompt refinement and output evaluation, reasoning errors, hallucinations, bias, and data privacy and security. When practicing with AI tools, compare generated work with requirements and observed system behavior, and do not submit sensitive data to tools that are not approved for it.
For AI-based products, CT-AI v2.0 addresses quality challenges that include probabilistic behavior, non-determinism, and dependence on data. Its lifecycle coverage includes input data testing, model testing, and ML development testing. A useful study goal is to learn how to evaluate the system and its data across that lifecycle, rather than treating an AI feature as an ordinary deterministic function.
Make your practice visible
A compact portfolio project can show how you think without implying that a portfolio is a formal employer requirement.
- Choose a public sample application or a non-sensitive toy project. State its purpose, assumptions, and the risks you intend to examine.
- Design representative tests and explain why they matter. Include expected behavior and what would count as a failure.
- Automate a meaningful slice if appropriate. Explain what the automation covers and what remains manual.
- Show how you reviewed results, handled ambiguous outcomes, and communicated defects or limitations.
- If the project includes an AI feature, include examples of variable outputs and a repeatable approach for evaluating them.
Do not publish private company code, data, credentials, or confidential prompts in a public portfolio.
Use screenshots when they help explain evidence
For a portfolio or test report, browser screenshots can document visible states such as an error message, an unexpected layout, or a workflow result. One do-it-yourself option is to open the sample application in a browser, reproduce the state, capture the relevant viewport or full page, and label the image with the test case and observed result. Keep screenshots free of personal or confidential information.

Choose a certification only when it fits your goal
ISTQB’s two specialist certifications provide structured routes into different subject areas. Both require the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) certificate to sit the exam; that prerequisite applies to these exams, not universally to software testing jobs.

When CT-GenAI may fit
Consider CT-GenAI if your goal is to use generative AI in test analysis, design, automation, reporting, or test infrastructure, and to assess output quality and related risks. ISTQB lists accredited training and self-study from the syllabus and references as preparation routes. Its listed progression includes Advanced Level modules for Test Analyst, Technical Test Analyst, Test Manager, and Test Engineering, followed later by Expert Level certifications.

When CT-AI may fit
Consider CT-AI v2.0 if your goal is to test AI-based systems and study data, model behavior, and ML development testing. Its version 2.0 material focuses on testing AI-based systems, including machine-learning systems and generative-AI systems.

ISTQB President Klaudia Dussa-Zieger described CT-GenAI as providing “the essential knowledge to use generative AI responsibly and effectively” in the organization’s July 25, 2025 launch announcement. That is ISTQB’s description of its credential, not independent evidence of employment outcomes.
