A practical whiteboard IDE starts with a choice: build a freeform infinite canvas, or a structured node editor. React canvas and diagramming libraries can provide the editing surface, but they do not automatically solve your app’s identity, permissions, persistence, asset storage, or collaboration infrastructure. Choose the interaction model first, then build those product services around it.
Choose the kind of software design tool you are building
A freeform whiteboard lets people place and connect objects wherever they want. A node editor organizes work into defined nodes and edges, making it more suitable for workflows, flowcharts, and interactive diagrams. These models overlap, but their editing behavior and extension needs differ enough to guide library choice.
| Decision | tldraw | React Flow |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Freeform whiteboard or infinite canvas with drawing, shapes, text, arrows, and media. | Node-based editors and interactive diagrams. |
| React foundation | React package and editor API; the repository quick start uses npm i tldraw and the <Tldraw /> component. |
React package @xyflow/react. |
| Customization | Custom shapes, tools, bindings, UI, and runtime control. | Customizable nodes and interactive node-based UI. |
| Collaboration evidence | Official materials describe sync, presence, and a multiplayer starter kit. | The official overview establishes node-editor capabilities; it does not establish an equivalent collaboration architecture. |
| License note | The repository distinguishes MIT-licensed starter kits from the separately licensed SDK; it says production use requires a license key. | The official overview states an MIT license. |
This is a feature-fit comparison based on official materials, not a performance benchmark. See the tldraw overview, its whiteboard features, the tldraw repository, and the React Flow overview before making a final choice.

For a freeform canvas, an SDK can supply much of the editor behavior that would otherwise take substantial application work: drawing, shapes, text, selection, transforms, navigation, and extension points. tldraw documents these capabilities for React canvas applications. Its whiteboard feature set also includes media and collaboration capabilities, while its APIs allow teams to create custom shapes and tools or adapt the UI.
#1 Best Overall
That foundation is not the whole product. Keep the canvas layer distinct from application services such as user identity, access control, saving and loading documents, asset handling, and real-time synchronization. A workflow builder with constrained node types may instead be better served by a node-editor library whose interaction model starts with nodes and connections.
Set up the React canvas and Node.js project
-
Check the selected library’s current package requirements against your app’s Node.js version and build setup. The tldraw repository lists Node.js
^20.0.0for local repository development; that is not a universal requirement for every app consuming the package. -
For a tldraw quick start, install the package with
npm i tldraw, then render its<Tldraw />component in your React application. Consult the repository instructions for current setup details.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Build the product-specific interface and behavior through the library’s extension APIs: for example, the shapes, tools, bindings, and controls that match your design workflow.
-
Connect the editor to your application services for document persistence, identity, permissions, and asset access. Keep these concerns explicit rather than assuming that rendering a canvas provides them.
-
Decide whether collaboration is needed and choose its sync and hosting architecture separately. Test the chosen setup against your expected document and deployment requirements.
Plan collaboration as a separate system
tldraw’s collaboration materials describe live presence and syncing, role APIs, and a self-hosted multiplayer starter kit built with Cloudflare Durable Objects. Its product page states that up to 50 collaborators can edit the same canvas simultaneously. Treat that figure as a vendor specification—not an independently measured capacity guarantee—and verify the current limit and architecture before adopting it.

The multiplayer collaboration documentation describes the available primitives and starter-kit approach; deployment choices should reflect the product’s security and operational needs.

Check licensing before production
The tldraw repository says its starter kits are MIT-licensed, while the SDK has a separate tldraw license and requires a license key for production use. Review the current license and commercial terms for your intended deployment. The React Flow overview states that its project is MIT-licensed. Licensing details can change, so verify them directly in the tldraw repository and React Flow documentation before release.
