You can build a useful smart home starter setup for about $150–$175, using a compatible voice-assistant speaker or Matter controller, two smart plugs, and two smart bulbs. Those figures are estimates from a 2026 buying guide, not live October prices or a guarantee that tax will keep the total under $200. Check current prices and the exact models’ platform and network requirements before ordering.
What to buy first
Start with devices that make everyday tasks easier without committing to a houseful of connected products: one controller or compatible speaker, two smart plugs, and two dimmable smart bulbs. Plugs can switch suitable appliances on and off; bulbs add app or voice control and dimming where supported. You can add more plugs later if the first pair proves useful.
Choose products that work with the voice assistant or smart-home platform you already use. Matter can help compatible devices work across supported platforms, but the label alone does not guarantee that every feature works in every app. Confirm support for the exact plug and bulb models, not just their product families. TP-Link’s Matter guidance describes support for Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, and SmartThings, along with Matter multi-admin control.

How the estimated budget breaks down
The following are approximate component and bundle ranges published by Online Tech Tips in 2026. They are ballpark estimates, not current retailer quotes; prices and availability can change. The bundle totals are not a promise that a purchase will remain under $200 after tax.

| Two-pack of Matter smart plugs | $25–$35 |
| Two-pack of Matter dimmable bulbs | $30–$45 |
| Additional two-pack of plugs | $25–$35 |

| Setup with four plugs, two bulbs, and one hub | About $180–$200 |
These component ranges do not add up to the bundle totals on their own, so use the bundle figures as that guide’s separate estimates rather than assuming they are a precise itemized checkout. Check the cart total for the models you actually select. Online Tech Tips’ guide advises readers to double-check prices because they fluctuate.
Choose a platform and controller that fit your home
A Matter controller is used to set up Matter devices and support control or automation in a platform. A Thread border router has a different job: it connects Thread devices to the home network. Some products provide both capabilities, but a speaker or hub that supports Matter is not automatically a Thread border router.

Google says a Matter hub is needed to set up Matter devices and control or automate them remotely. Its device information lists Nest Mini and Nest Audio as Google Home Matter hubs for Wi-Fi devices. Google TV Streamer (4K), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, and Nest Wifi Pro are listed as hubs with Wi-Fi and Thread. Check Google’s current Matter device and hub information against the products you plan to use, since supported devices and requirements can change.

For Google Home, Apple Home, or SmartThings, confirm the device’s specific platform support and whether your existing equipment supplies the controller functions it needs. No one platform is the best fit for every home.

Check the connection and setup requirements
- Wi-Fi band: Amazon says most smart-home Wi-Fi devices only work on 2.4 GHz. Check the individual product’s requirements and whether your router can provide the required band during setup. See Amazon’s smart-home setup guidance.
- Matter setup: TP-Link recommends first setting up its Matter-enabled device in the Tapo or Kasa app to access its full feature set, then adding it to a third-party Matter platform if desired. Follow the app and product instructions for the brand you buy; setup steps can vary.
- Multi-admin: Matter multi-admin can let a compatible device be controlled from more than one supported platform. It does not remove the need to check the platforms and features supported by the exact device.
- Thread: If a bulb, plug, or other device requires Thread, make sure your controller setup includes a Thread border router. A Matter controller without Thread support will not meet that requirement.
Use a quick checklist before checkout
- Pick the platform you already use. Decide whether your setup will center on Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings, or another supported platform.
- Verify each exact model. Confirm the plug and bulb work with that platform and support the functions you want, such as dimming or voice control.
- Match controller features to device needs. Check whether you need a Matter controller, a Thread border router, or both.
- Confirm network requirements. Check the device’s Wi-Fi band or Thread requirement and your router or hub setup.
- Recalculate the real total. Compare current prices for the controller and device multipacks you selected, then account for tax and availability rather than relying on an estimated bundle range.
