GitHub can store a Discord bot’s code and automate building, testing, and deployment, but GitHub Pages and a completed Actions run do not keep a bot running. A working setup has three parts: a repository, GitHub Actions workflows, and a separate runtime that runs the bot continuously—or, for an interaction-based app, a public endpoint that Discord can reach.

What “GitHub-based hosting” means for a Discord bot

Think of GitHub as the control plane for the project, not necessarily the machine that serves the bot. The repository holds the source code and workflow configuration. GitHub Actions can run jobs in response to repository events, such as building, testing, or deploying changes. A separate host runs a persistent bot process, unless the app uses Discord interactions through a public endpoint instead.

  • Repository: tracks code, configuration, and changes.
  • GitHub Actions: automates work on that code, such as tests and deployment steps.
  • Runtime or endpoint: runs the bot or receives Discord interaction requests.

This distinction matters because finishing a workflow job does not establish that a bot process remains alive after the job ends. GitHub describes Actions as workflow automation and CI/CD, including building, testing, and deploying software; the workflow itself is not an always-on bot service.

Choose the Discord connection model first

The right runtime depends on how the bot communicates with Discord. Discord’s developer quick start distinguishes the HTTP API from the Gateway API, which uses a WebSocket connection for state and events. Interaction-based apps follow a different pattern: Discord sends requests to a public URL configured as the app’s Interaction Endpoint URL.

Bot pattern What must be available What GitHub contributes
Gateway bot A process host that can maintain the WebSocket connection and run the bot’s language, dependencies, and architecture. Source control and optional Actions automation for build, test, and deployment.
Interaction endpoint A public endpoint configured with Discord that can receive and verify interaction requests and return responses. Source control and optional Actions automation; GitHub Pages is not a substitute for an endpoint that processes requests.

Discord’s quick-start example for interactions uses an Express server, exposes it through a public tunnel, verifies request signatures, and responds to PING requests. That is an instructional sample, not a production hosting recommendation. Decide which pattern the app uses before choosing a host: a Gateway bot needs a running process with outbound connectivity, while an interaction app needs a publicly reachable endpoint configured with Discord.

Why GitHub Pages does not host the bot process

GitHub Pages publishes static site content—HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—from a repository, optionally after a build step. It is suitable for a project website or documentation, but it does not run a Discord bot process or maintain a Gateway connection. A Pages site can complement a bot project; it cannot keep the bot online.

What GitHub Actions can and cannot do

An Actions workflow can automate steps such as running tests, preparing a build, and triggering a deployment. Those jobs execute on a runner. A runner is the machine or environment that performs the workflow job; it is not automatically the bot’s permanent runtime.

A deployment design that starts the bot from a workflow must explain what happens after the job finishes, how the bot restarts after a crash or host reboot, and how its credentials reach the running process. A normal workflow run alone establishes none of those persistence properties. Do not treat a successful green check as proof of continuous availability.

Pick a runtime that matches the bot

GitHub says self-hosted Actions runners can be physical, virtual, containerized, on-premises, or cloud-based. They give an operator control over the machine, but the operator remains responsible for maintaining it and its non-runner software. A physical Linux computer, including a small board, is one possible option—not a requirement and not evidence of any particular implementation.

Option Operational responsibility Key checks
Self-managed machine You maintain the host, operating system, bot runtime, and process-restart behavior. GitHub says self-hosted runners are free to use with Actions, but the operator pays the cost of maintaining runner machines. Confirm the bot’s language and dependencies work on the machine’s operating system and CPU architecture. A runner only runs Actions jobs when its runner application is active; that fact does not by itself keep the bot running.
Managed process host or cloud machine The division of responsibility depends on the service. The source material does not establish comparative prices, uptime guarantees, or a particular provider. Check supported languages, dependencies, architecture, containers, restart behavior, network needs, and how secrets are configured.
GitHub Pages Publishes static website files; it does not operate the bot process. Use it for companion documentation or a project landing page, not a Gateway connection or request-processing endpoint.

For self-hosted runners, GitHub currently lists Linux ARM32 support and Linux ARM64 support as public preview. GitHub also says Docker container actions and service containers require Linux with Docker installed. Check the current runner documentation against the target machine and workflow before relying on a particular architecture or container setup.

Build the platform around a deployment boundary

A simple, maintainable design keeps code changes, workflow jobs, and the running service distinct. The sequence below is a design checklist rather than a claim about a specific person’s implementation; the exact workflow configuration depends on the language, host, and deployment method.

  1. Put the bot code and workflow configuration in a repository. Keep source and automation changes reviewable. Separate any companion static website from the bot runtime conceptually, even if both live in one repository.
  2. Choose Gateway or interactions. For a Gateway bot, plan for a continuously running process. For interactions, plan for a public endpoint, Discord’s endpoint configuration, signature verification, and suitable request handling.
  3. Choose a host that supports the project. Verify language and dependency support, CPU architecture, container requirements, outbound connectivity for Gateway use, and any public inbound endpoint requirement for interactions.
  4. Use Actions for repeatable automation. Have workflows perform the jobs you need, such as tests or a build, and arrange deployment to the chosen runtime. Do not assume a job runner becomes a durable service merely because a workflow starts the bot.
  5. Define process lifecycle behavior. Decide how the runtime starts the bot, keeps it running, detects failure, restarts it, and handles host reboots. These details are part of the hosting design, not a property guaranteed by GitHub Actions.
  6. Protect credentials and restrict workflow access. Store the Discord token as a secret, minimize workflow permissions, and limit who can modify workflows that can access privileged credentials.
  7. Test the actual runtime path. Confirm that the bot connects or that the interaction endpoint is reachable and correctly handles Discord requests. A passing build or test job is useful evidence about that job, not an uptime measurement.

Keep the Discord token and workflows secure

Discord states that a bot token authorizes API requests, is highly sensitive, and must not be committed to version control. GitHub Actions supports repository-, environment-, and organization-level secrets. Put the token in an appropriately scoped secret and pass it only to the job or runtime that needs it; never print it in logs.

  • Do not rely on automatic log redaction to catch every transformed form of a secret.
  • If a token is exposed, rotate it rather than assuming that deleting the visible copy removes the risk.
  • If accepting outside contributions, scrutinize privileged workflow triggers. GitHub warns that workflows using pull_request_target or workflow_run can expose a repository to compromise when they check out untrusted pull-request code.

Understand self-hosted runner job timing

A self-hosted runner is a worker for Actions jobs, not a hosting guarantee for the bot. The runner application must be running on its host to accept jobs, and the host needs outbound HTTPS communication with GitHub. According to GitHub’s self-hosted runner documentation accessed on October 4, 2026, if an assigned runner does not pick up a job within 60 seconds, GitHub re-queues it. A job that remains queued because no matching runner is available fails after 24 hours. These limits describe workflow job handling, not bot uptime.

GitHub recommends ephemeral runners for autoscaling and says persistent self-hosted runners are not recommended for that use case. That recommendation concerns the runner fleet and job execution; it does not define how a separate bot service should persist or restart.

What a simple setup can honestly promise

A GitHub-centered workflow can make source changes trackable and automate repeatable checks or deployment steps. Whether the bot remains available depends on the runtime, its process management, the network path it needs, and how credentials are delivered. The available platform documentation does not establish a particular implementation’s language, host, persistence method, monthly cost, or measured uptime, so those should be chosen and verified for the project rather than inferred from the phrase “GitHub-based hosting.”
