Build safety into the assistant’s permissions and runtime—not just its prompt. Give it only the access a task requires, isolate command execution, restrict network access, protect secrets, treat repository and web content as untrusted, and have a person review consequential changes.
What makes an AI coding assistant safer?
A coding assistant can read files, propose edits, run commands, install packages, or interact with external services. Each capability adds risk. A prompt that says “be careful” cannot reliably prevent an unsafe action; enforce limits in the tools and environment the assistant uses.
One risk is indirect prompt injection: instructions hidden in content the assistant is asked to process. OWASP identifies issues, pull requests, comments, READMEs, logs, changelogs, and fetched web pages as possible carriers. Treat these as data to analyze, not as authority to change the task or expand permissions. Review what the assistant does after it encounters them.
How to build one safely, step by step
1. Start with a narrow job and minimal access
Write down what the assistant needs to read, edit, and execute for one specific task. Start in read-only or suggestion-only mode where possible. Grant additional capabilities only when needed, and scope each tool to the relevant files or actions. The enforcement should live outside the model, so a mistaken or manipulated response cannot grant itself more access.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Isolate execution
Run commands in a sandbox, restricted shell, virtual machine, dev container, or disposable workspace rather than directly in an environment containing your everyday credentials and data. Limit which filesystem paths commands can reach and restrict outbound network destinations. An unfamiliar repository should not inherit access to your full development environment.
Approvals and isolation solve different problems: approval asks a person to authorize an action, while a sandbox constrains what a command can do if it is unsafe. Use both where appropriate, especially for actions that can delete data, expose information, change production systems, spend money, or affect other people.

3. Keep instructions separate from untrusted content
Make clear which text is your task instruction and which text came from a repository, issue, tool result, or website. Keep context focused; do not give the assistant unrelated logs or documents. When it processes external or project content, check for unexpected file edits, command requests, or attempts to broaden the task.
4. Keep secrets out of reach
Exclude .env files, keys, credentials, and other sensitive files from the assistant’s context. Do not put production tokens in a development environment the assistant can use. Before sharing private code or logs, review the provider’s documentation on what context is sent and how it is handled.

5. Require specific approval for consequential actions
For destructive, financial, administrative, or externally visible actions, require explicit approval that identifies the exact action and target. A broad prompt such as “allow the agent to proceed” is not a substitute for tool-level scope and independent authorization checks.
6. Review, test, and take responsibility for changes
Inspect the complete diff, including changes to dependencies, build scripts, and CI/CD configuration. Verify suggested package names and provenance before installing them. Independently test security-critical behavior such as authentication, authorization, input validation, and cryptographic operations; passing tests alone do not prove code is secure. Add adversarial cases the assistant did not write, and assign a human owner before accepting or committing the result.

Choosing an implementation approach
An IDE-integrated assistant, a custom tool-using agent, and a constrained prototype can all be evaluated using the same practical criteria. Compare whether permissions are enforced outside the model, how files and network access are isolated, how exact actions are approved and reviewed, what code and secrets enter context, how package installation and CI/CD changes are controlled, and how security behavior is tested.
For example, VS Code documents workspace trust, workspace-limited built-in file access, tool selection, session-scoped permissions, terminal approval, diff review, and OS-level agent sandboxing. Its documentation also describes important boundaries: sandboxing applies to shell subprocesses, not built-in file tools, and does not block outbound network access by default. Availability and status vary by platform; the documentation marks sandboxing Preview on macOS, Linux, and WSL2, and Experimental on Windows. Check the current VS Code security documentation before relying on a particular control.

That example illustrates why feature labels are not a complete security assessment. Confirm which tools and paths a control actually covers, and add environment-level restrictions for anything it leaves accessible.
Where to find a security checklist
For a structured way to define and verify requirements, OWASP describes its Artificial Intelligence Security Verification Standard (AISVS) 1.0 as a free, vendor-neutral catalogue of testable requirements. OWASP says the 2026 standard has 191 requirements across 12 chapters and three appendices, and was released in June 2026. It can help teams turn broad security goals into checks; it does not replace the safeguards and review needed for a particular assistant.
OWASP also summarizes a key accountability limit: “AI tools do not accept responsibility for the code they generate.” The developer who accepts and commits code remains responsible for its security and maintainability.
