Build for the board you can improve now, not a perfect lineup you may never find. Take useful early units, favor pieces that support more than one direction, spend with a plan, and reassess after every round. In games such as Teamfight Tactics (TFT) and Hearthstone Battlegrounds, “deck” usually means your evolving in-match team or board—not a constructed card deck with an opening hand.

First, know which kind of “deck” you are building

Autobattlers use different systems, so the details of one game should not be treated as universal rules. In TFT, players draft champions from a shared pool, manage gold, equip items, and position a team for automatic combat. Riot describes multiple ways to win and emphasizes adapting to what the game offers. Riot’s TFT overview outlines those basics.

In Hearthstone Battlegrounds, players recruit minions during Tavern phases and send an evolving board into automatic combat. Blizzard’s Battlegrounds introduction describes actions such as buying, refreshing, selling, freezing, upgrading the Tavern, and positioning minions. Its article dates to 2019, so check the live game for current costs and mechanics rather than relying on historical specifics.

Neither system is the same as a constructed Hearthstone deck, where you bring a fixed collection of cards and make opening-hand decisions. The shared strategic idea is to use early resources well; the specific choices depend on the game.

Choose pieces that help immediately

Early picks should make your current team more capable, not merely promise a powerful combination later. A unit that can contribute now is generally a safer foundation than several weak pieces held only because they might complete a future synergy. This is a practical inference from the way shared-pool drafting and evolving boards work—not an official universal rule or a guarantee of a particular result.

When comparing two available options, consider:

  • Immediate contribution: Does the unit improve the team you can field now?
  • Existing connections: Does it strengthen a trait or interaction among units you already have?
  • Future flexibility: Can it remain useful if the next offers point toward a different composition?
  • Resource cost: What purchase, refresh, upgrade, or other opportunity are you giving up?
  • Items and position: Does it make good use of equipment you hold, and can it function from the position available?

These are decision checks, not a validated scoring system. Their purpose is to expose trade-offs before you commit.

Build overlap rather than a brittle plan

Synergies matter, but they work best as direction rather than a promise. Prefer a new piece that improves your current board while leaving a plausible path into a stronger composition. If a planned combination depends on several specific units, do not keep spending as though those units are guaranteed to appear.

Riot’s TFT design guidance treats understanding interlocking traits and responding flexibly to champions appearing in the draft as complementary skills. Apply that principle by asking each round whether the units you have actually support the plan. If not, keep the useful core and change direction instead of forcing a set-up that the available pool is not supplying.

Make spending serve the board and the next options

Currency spent now is unavailable for another choice. A purchase, shop refresh, or upgrade should therefore be judged against what it adds and what it costs you in flexibility. TFT’s official overview identifies gold income and economy management as part of play; in Battlegrounds, the cited introduction describes recruitment, refreshes, selling, freezing, and Tavern upgrades as choices made between combats.

Do not carry old Battlegrounds costs or economic rules forward as current facts: the cited introduction is from 2019, and exact rules can change. Use the current in-game information for your version. Across games, the reliable habit is to avoid spending merely because you can; spend when the likely board improvement is worth the alternatives you are giving up.

Use positioning as part of the build

A team is not only a collection of units. Placement can affect which unit is exposed, which effects connect, and how combat unfolds. In its Battlegrounds introduction, Blizzard describes left-side minions attacking first and discusses positioning around Taunt, Poisonous, Deathrattle, and Divine Shield effects. Those are game-specific examples from that article, not rules for every autobattler; consult the current game rules before applying exact tactical prescriptions.

Before combat, check whether your formation supports the units’ roles and effects. A strong combination can still be poorly used if an important unit is positioned where it cannot do its job or is exposed earlier than intended.

Reassess after every round

At each new shop or planning phase, compare the offers and your current situation with the direction you were pursuing. Ask whether the next piece makes the board better now, whether it advances a realistic synergy, and whether buying or refreshing keeps enough options open. Where the game reveals opponents’ boards or strategies, use that information too.

Riot’s TFT guidance explicitly includes sensitivity to available champions, opponent strategies, open champions, and counter-building among mastery skills. That supports watching the evolving game rather than following a fixed opening recipe. A composition guide can suggest possibilities, but it cannot make the next offer appear or account for every opponent and game state.

Do not import constructed-deck opening advice

Constructed Hearthstone illustrates why “early game” does not mean the same thing in every card game. Blizzard’s 2018 guide to the first five turns contrasts aggressive use of cards, tempo plays for board control, and control strategies that may trade early life for card advantage and later stabilization. Its contributor David “shoop” Steinberg advises: “Evaluate the game state. If you’re in danger of falling behind, play ambitiously and take risks; if you’re ahead, focus on denying options for your opponent.”

That advice concerns constructed Hearthstone strategy, not a universal autobattler rule. Likewise, Blizzard’s mulligan guide says opening-hand choices vary with deck style and opponent. Do not apply mulligan rules to a shop-based game where you recruit and reshape a board over multiple rounds.

Use a flexible round-by-round checklist

  1. Read the current board and offer: Identify which available unit improves the team you can field now.
  2. Check overlap: Prefer useful links to units or traits you already have, without requiring a full future combination.
  3. Compare the opportunity cost: Decide whether a purchase, refresh, or upgrade is better than keeping your other options.
  4. Keep a second route open: Avoid committing to a composition that only works if several specific pieces arrive.
  5. Set the board deliberately: Use the current game’s positioning rules and the effects of your units.
  6. Update the plan: After the next combat and new offers, adapt to your board and any opponent information the game provides.

There is no evidence here for a single early team or a universal win-rate advantage. TFT sets and available compositions change, and the cited official articles do not establish current best-in-slot units, balance, or costs. Treat early choices as a way to stay functional and preserve options until the game gives you clearer evidence about which direction is viable.
