A practical way to build a real-time multiplayer 2D browser game is to use Phaser and TypeScript for the browser client, Node.js and Express with Socket.IO for the game server, and MongoDB for durable player and match records. Keep the server authoritative: clients send input, the server validates it and updates the game, and clients render the resulting state. Socket.IO rooms route events to match participants; they do not replace the game rules or provide durable storage.

What each part of the stack does

Component Role in the game What it does not provide by itself
Phaser Runs the browser-side 2D game: rendering, input handling, and presentation of the state received from the server. Phaser supports JavaScript and TypeScript. It is a 2D framework, not a built-in 3D renderer or 3D physics engine, and it is not a modern-console development solution.
TypeScript Adds static types to client and server code. Typed event maps can help catch mismatched event names and payload shapes while compiling. Types do not validate data at runtime. A malicious or modified client can still send malformed or dishonest payloads.
Node.js, Express, and Socket.IO Node.js runs the server; Express provides the HTTP server to which Socket.IO is attached. Socket.IO carries bidirectional, event-based messages between clients and the server. Socket.IO is not the game simulation, a database, or a plain WebSocket protocol. A raw WebSocket client cannot connect directly to a Socket.IO server.
MongoDB Stores records intended to persist, such as player profiles or statistics, completed matches, and leaderboard data. Persistent database records are not a substitute for the low-latency state updates needed during an active match.

Socket.IO can use HTTP long-polling, WebSocket, or WebTransport depending on browser and network capabilities. Application code should use the Socket.IO client and server protocol rather than assuming every connection is a raw WebSocket.

How the client, server, and database fit together

In a small coin-collection game, the browser runs Phaser and sends player input. The server holds the match state, including player positions, coin spawning, scores, and the final result. It broadcasts state changes to the players in that match. When a match ends, the application can write its result and relevant player data to MongoDB.

This separation gives each part a clear job: Phaser presents the game, Socket.IO transports events, server-side code enforces the rules, and MongoDB retains records after the live match is over. The tutorial implementation uses separate frontend and backend TypeScript projects. They communicate at runtime over HTTP and Socket.IO; they are not one shared build-time package.

Why the server should own the game state

Do not accept a client-reported final position or score as fact. The client runs on a machine the player controls, so its code and messages can be modified. Instead, have the client send an intent—such as a direction or an attempt to collect a coin—and have the server check whether that action is valid before changing state.

The Phaser-hosted Multiplayer Game Tutorial Part 2, published September 21, 2017, puts the principle this way: “We can make our game more secure by sending inputs to the server instead of the position. And then, we can calculate the new position of the player and broadcast it to other players.” The tutorial does not identify an individual speaker.

TypeScript event types make the code easier to maintain, but they are not a security boundary. Validate incoming payloads on the server at runtime: check their shape, permitted values, and whether the requested action is legal for that player’s current match state. The server should calculate positions and scores and decide when the match ends.

How Socket.IO rooms route match events

A server can assign each match a room ID and join its participating sockets to the corresponding Socket.IO room. It can then broadcast match updates to that subset of connected clients instead of sending every event to every player. Rooms are a server-side concept; clients do not manage room membership directly. Socket.IO automatically removes a socket from its rooms when it disconnects.

Room membership handles message delivery, not authority. Your application still needs to decide who may join a match, what actions each player may take, how state changes, and what should happen after a disconnect or reconnection.

A practical build sequence

  1. Create separate projects. Set up a TypeScript backend using Node.js, Express, Socket.IO, and the official MongoDB Node.js driver. Set up a browser frontend using Vite, Phaser, and socket.io-client. Keep their runtime connection explicit rather than relying on the projects sharing source code.
  2. Define the event contract. Specify the event names and payload shapes for joining a room, movement input, coin collection, game start, game end, and player movement updates. The tutorial keeps corresponding event-map types in each project; if those copies drift, compile-time checking in each project will not catch every mismatch. A larger application can instead maintain a shared package or generate protocol definitions.
  3. Join a match. Let a player request or create a lobby/room ID, validate the request on the server, and place accepted sockets in the relevant Socket.IO room.
  4. Run the authoritative game loop. Receive player intent, validate it, update the server’s match state, and broadcast the resulting state. Have Phaser render those updates rather than deciding the final position or outcome.
  5. Persist completed records. Store the player, match, and leaderboard data that must remain after the game session. Keep the live match loop separate from these durable writes.
  6. Choose where MongoDB runs. You can operate a local or self-managed MongoDB deployment, or use MongoDB Atlas. Atlas is a managed service with operational capabilities such as provisioning, patching, backup, monitoring, and scaling. Check the current offering and plan details for your needs; the stack does not require Atlas specifically.

Keep live state separate from durable data

The example stores active rooms in an in-memory gameRooms map and uses MongoDB for player records, completed matches, and leaderboard queries. This is a straightforward prototype arrangement: the map is quick to access while the server is running, and the database retains selected information across sessions.

An in-memory map belongs to one Node.js process. It is lost when that process stops, and another server instance cannot automatically see it. Writing match history to MongoDB does not distribute active rooms or coordinate the live game loop. Once a deployment has multiple server instances, it needs a design for shared room ownership or coordination, as well as clear reconnect and disconnect behavior.

Where this starter architecture stops scaling

  • One process is simple, multiple processes require coordination. The tutorial’s in-memory room map is explicitly a single-process design. Adding instances without shared ownership or routing can leave players in a match handled by different processes that do not share the same live state.
  • Persistence and synchronization solve different problems. MongoDB is useful for durable player, match, and leaderboard records in this design. It does not automatically make gameplay updates low-latency or synchronize active state across servers.
  • Server authority adds work. The server must implement and validate game rules, movement, scoring, and other meaningful outcomes. This is more resistant to client tampering than trusting reported positions, but it requires the server to perform the relevant simulation.
  • Types are not runtime defenses. Typed event maps help detect some programming mistakes during compilation. They do not remove the need to validate messages received from clients.
  • The game engine sets a scope boundary. Phaser is a fit for 2D browser games. If the project depends on built-in 3D rendering or 3D physics, Phaser is not that solution.

What the tutorial example does—and does not—establish

The MongoDB tutorial demonstrates a small two-player coin-collection game and configures that sample match to last 30 seconds. That is an example setting, not a recommended duration for multiplayer games generally. Its implementation is a teaching example, not evidence of tested capacity or production readiness.

  • FUN FAMILY GAME FOR KIDS: Remember playing the original Trouble board game as a kid? Introduce a new generation to classic Trouble gameplay with this Trouble game for kids
  • EASY TO LEARN AND SET UP: The Trouble game is easy to play and quick set up. The object of the game is simple: the first player to get all of their game pieces around the board wins

  • POP-O-MATIC BUBBLE: In this beloved children's board game, players press and pop the plastic bubble to roll the die. The iconic Pop-o-Matic die roller is fun to press, and it keeps the die from getting lost
  • BOARD GAMES FOR FAMILY: Adults and kids can play this family board game together. It's a fun indoor game for playdates and a great choice for Family Game Night

The useful takeaway is the separation of responsibilities: Phaser draws the browser game, the server owns live outcomes, Socket.IO routes events, and MongoDB stores records that need to persist. The in-memory room map is suitable for demonstrating the flow in one process, but a multi-instance deployment needs an explicit shared-state and coordination design.
