For a small team, the practical starting point is usually either a managed PostgreSQL database paired with a small custom API service, or a PostgreSQL-generated REST API for a CRUD-focused application. Neither is always cheaper: the right choice depends on workload, region, uptime, backups, traffic, and the time you can spend operating the system.

Choose the API shape that fits the application

Approach Works well when What you still need to own
Custom API service with managed PostgreSQL You need business rules, validation, integrations, workflows, or control over HTTP behavior. API code, database access rules, connection handling, and the service’s deployment and monitoring.
Generated REST API The application is predominantly CRUD and its database structure maps cleanly to the operations clients need. Schema design, roles, authorization, policies, and careful control over which data and operations are exposed.

Custom API for application-specific logic

A small stateless service can implement validation and business workflows, then use PostgreSQL for persistent data. This adds a deployable API component, but gives you a place to enforce behavior that should not be left to clients.

Generated API for CRUD-heavy services

PostgREST is a standalone server that turns PostgreSQL into a RESTful API, using database structure and permissions to determine available operations. Supabase also offers a Data REST API based on PostgREST, which can be used directly from a browser or alongside a separate API service; see its Data API documentation.

Generating endpoints can reduce handwritten CRUD plumbing, but it does not make authorization automatic. Decide which schemas and tables are exposed, which roles can act on them, and what each user is allowed to do. “No custom API code” is not the same as “no application security work.”

Select a managed database for the workload

For a small team, a managed PostgreSQL service can reduce the work of patching, backups, monitoring, and recovery compared with operating the database yourself. Evaluate the service and plan rather than assuming that a provider’s feature list makes it the lowest-cost option.

Match capacity and controls to usage

Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server documents a burstable compute tier for development and low-concurrency workloads, alongside General Purpose and Memory Optimized tiers for higher concurrency, scale, and more predictable performance. Azure also documents automated patching, configurable maintenance windows, monitoring and alerting, and controls to stop and start a server. Compute billing stops while the server is stopped, so that control is useful for non-continuous workloads, not a service that must stay available during that period. Azure’s Flexible Server overview says backup retention defaults to seven days and can be configured up to 35 days; these are Azure service settings, not PostgreSQL-wide defaults.

Check the operational features included

Render’s PostgreSQL documentation lists backup and recovery, read replicas, high availability, connection pooling, and performance troubleshooting. These features describe what the service offers, not how its cost compares with another provider for your workload. Check the exact plan and included limits.

Choose database connections for where the API runs

As Supabase’s connection guide puts it, “How you connect to your database depends on where your code runs.” A persistent API process and a fleet of short-lived serverless functions do not have the same connection pattern.

Runtime or task Connection approach Important consideration
Persistent backend Usually a direct database connection. Use the provider’s supported network path and account for connection limits.
Serverless or edge functions with many short-lived connections Transaction-mode pooling is commonly appropriate. Connections are reused at transaction boundaries; prepared statements and persistent session state may not work.
IPv4-only persistent backend on Supabase Supabase documents session pooling as an alternative. Availability and networking details are platform-specific; check current provider guidance.
Migrations, dump/restore, or replication Supabase recommends direct connections for PostgreSQL-native tasks. Do not assume an application pool is suitable for administrative or replication work.

Serverless connection practices

For serverless connections, Supabase advises creating the client once at module scope, keeping the local pool small (one is its documented starting recommendation), disabling prepared statements in transaction mode, and requiring SSL. Warm instances can each create their own pool, and their number is not under the developer’s control. Treat these as Supabase-specific directions, not settings to copy blindly to another provider or driver.

Know what transaction pooling changes

In transaction pooling, a database connection returns to the pool when a transaction ends. Supabase documents that prepared statements are unsupported in this mode and session-level state does not persist between transactions. Code that relies on session state, temporary tables, session advisory locks, or listeners may need a different connection mode or must keep the relevant work within a transaction.

Set the security boundary before exposing data

Supabase’s Data API requires row-level security (RLS) and policies that permit intended access. Its RLS documentation states that when RLS is enabled and no policies are defined, requests are denied. That is a useful default to understand: access should be explicitly allowed rather than inferred from an endpoint existing.

  • Define database roles and access rules around your actual user and tenant model.
  • Test both permitted and denied requests, including attempts to access another user’s or tenant’s records.
  • Keep privileged secrets out of browser code; browser-facing access needs policies appropriate for untrusted clients.
  • Require encrypted database connections. Supabase advises requiring SSL so a client refuses an unencrypted connection rather than falling back to plaintext.

Provider network controls are also specific to the service. Microsoft documents TLS 1.2 or later for Azure Database for PostgreSQL and private networking options that can deny public access when virtual network integration is used; see the Azure networking documentation.

Compare total cost, not just database compute

A low compute line item does not establish the lowest-cost backend. The current provider documentation describes features and cost controls, but does not provide a like-for-like price comparison. Without a defined region, workload, traffic pattern, and availability target, a provider ranking would be misleading.

  • Database: compute, storage, and capacity headroom for expected concurrency.
  • API runtime: hosting for a custom service or generated API, plus any separate services it needs.
  • Connections and networking: pooling, network configuration, and applicable data-transfer or egress charges.
  • Recovery: backup retention, restore requirements, and the time needed to recover service.
  • Availability: the plan and architecture needed to meet your uptime expectations.
  • Operator time: patching, monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintaining or restoring a self-managed setup.

Azure documents automated backups and operational controls; Render lists recovery and backups among its managed-service features. Before relying on any plan, verify its current included limits and retention, then perform a restore exercise. The value of a managed service depends partly on how much operational work it removes for your team.

A practical build sequence

  1. Choose the API boundary. Use a custom service if the application needs substantial business logic or integrations; consider a generated REST API if the service is mostly CRUD.
  2. Model permissions with the schema. Decide which tables or schemas are exposed, create suitable roles and policies, and test allowed and denied access paths before connecting a browser or client.
  3. Select a database plan for real usage. Estimate concurrency, storage, uptime, and recovery needs. Treat burstable or stoppable capacity as an option for suitable low-concurrency or intermittent workloads, not as a universal production default.
  4. Match connection mode to runtime. Use a direct connection for persistent backends and database-native tasks where appropriate; use a supported transaction pool for short-lived serverless workloads, after checking driver compatibility and session-state needs.
  5. Secure connectivity. Require SSL and choose public or private networking according to the service’s capabilities and the application’s exposure.
  6. Budget for recovery and operations. Confirm backup retention and restore behavior, test recovery, and include API hosting, networking, and maintenance effort in the cost estimate.
