This walkthrough outlines a small, illustrative design and the JDBC patterns behind it. It is not a reconstruction of a specific project: the title does not establish its schema, interface, booking policies, or software versions.
What the application needs to model
For a minimal reservation application, separate three responsibilities: inventory, guest details, and reservations. One reasonable design is to represent individual rooms and link each reservation to a room; another is to track capacity by room type and date. Those choices affect how availability is calculated and what the application must lock when confirming a booking. Neither model is established as the schema of a particular project.
Before writing SQL, specify the business rules the database must enforce:
- Whether a reservation refers to a particular room or consumes room-type capacity.
- Which reservation states consume inventory, such as confirmed bookings versus cancelled requests.
- How check-in and check-out dates define a stay. A common choice is to treat the stay as including check-in and excluding check-out, but the application must state and apply its chosen convention consistently.
- Whether a guest can reserve multiple rooms and how cancellations or edits release or change inventory.
These rules are not interchangeable implementation details. An availability query that is correct for one inventory model or date convention may be wrong for another.

Connect Java to MySQL with JDBC
JDBC is Java’s database API; MySQL Connector/J is the driver that lets JDBC communicate with MySQL. Oracle’s JDBC tutorial names the driver class com.mysql.cj.jdbc.Driver and shows the URL form jdbc:mysql://host:port/database. Its tutorial was written for JDK 8, so use it for stable JDBC concepts and consult current product documentation for version-specific setup: Oracle’s JDBC connection tutorial. The Connector/J guide, revised August 31, 2026, describes Connector/J 26.7, recommends it for production systems, and lists MySQL Server 8.0 and later as supported. These are current documentation details, not evidence of the versions used by the project implied by the title.
The URL’s host and port identify the MySQL server, and the database portion identifies a schema. For connection configuration or connection management, Oracle describes DataSource as the preferred connection mechanism; simple examples often use DriverManager. Connector/J’s URL guidance says JDBC code should select the desired database with Connection.setCatalog(), rather than issuing SQL USE: Connector/J JDBC URL format.
| Choice | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
DriverManager |
Small examples or a simple standalone connection flow. | Connection setup is typically handled directly by application code. |
DataSource |
Applications that need a configurable connection source or connection management. | Requires configuring and obtaining the data source rather than opening connections directly in the example’s simplest style. |
Keep database credentials out of source code. Oracle explicitly cautions that its JDBC sample code does not use password-management techniques appropriate for deployed applications: Oracle’s JDBC connection tutorial. Supply secrets through deployment configuration or a suitable secrets-management mechanism instead of committing them with application code.

Use prepared statements for database inputs
Guest names, contact details, room identifiers, and dates should be passed as parameters, not concatenated into SQL strings. Oracle explains: “Prepared statements always treat client-supplied data as content of a parameter and never as a part of an SQL statement.” See Using Prepared Statements.
For example, keep the SQL structure fixed and bind values through a PreparedStatement:
String sql = "SELECT room_id FROM rooms WHERE room_type = ? AND active = ?";
try (PreparedStatement statement = connection.prepareStatement(sql)) {
statement.setString(1, requestedType);
statement.setBoolean(2, true);
try (ResultSet results = statement.executeQuery()) {
// Read matching rows.
}
}
The example only demonstrates parameter binding; the table and column names are illustrative, not a prescribed schema. SQL identifiers such as table names generally form part of the SQL structure, so do not accept them as arbitrary user-supplied text. Validate any application-selected identifier against an allowlist.

Search availability without treating it as a booking
An availability search answers what appears available at query time. It does not reserve the inventory. For an individual-room design, a search can find rooms without an overlapping reservation in an inventory-consuming state. For a room-type-capacity design, it must compare demand with capacity for the relevant dates. The exact query depends on the chosen schema, the check-in/check-out convention, and which statuses consume inventory; MySQL documentation does not prescribe a hotel availability query.
Keep the search and confirmation as distinct operations in both the interface and the data layer. Between a search and a later insert, another request may claim the same room or capacity. A plain availability SELECT followed by an INSERT does not guarantee that competing bookings cannot both succeed.
Confirm a reservation inside a transaction
Group the correctness-sensitive validation and writes into a transaction: obtain the relevant inventory representation, check or allocate it under a concurrency strategy suited to the model, write the reservation and related changes, then commit only if all required operations succeed. If any step fails, roll back. Keep the transaction short so locks are not held while waiting for user input or performing unrelated work.

MySQL InnoDB defaults to REPEATABLE READ, according to the MySQL transaction-isolation documentation. Ordinary consistent reads and locking reads can observe and lock data differently. Under READ COMMITTED, gap locking for ordinary searches is disabled except for foreign-key and duplicate-key checks, so phantom rows can occur. Changing isolation level alone is not a universal fix for reservation races.
Choose a lockable unit that matches inventory
MySQL’s SELECT ... FOR UPDATE is a locking read. Locks apply to index records scanned and depend on the indexes and search condition; they are released on commit or rollback. See MySQL locking reads.
- Individual rooms: a transaction can lock the relevant room or inventory row before confirming its allocation, then verify that the room remains eligible for the requested stay.
- Room-type capacity: coordinate capacity updates or reservation counts at the granularity where capacity is maintained. Locking an unrelated room row would not, by itself, protect a shared capacity total.
These are design implications of MySQL locking behavior, not a guarantee that one locking pattern is correct for every reservation schema. Review the exact predicates and indexes against the inventory model.

Handle conflicts and database failures
A reservation may fail because the inventory is no longer available, a database constraint rejects the write, or InnoDB detects a deadlock and rolls back a transaction. Show guests a useful outcome—such as asking them to choose another room or retry—rather than exposing raw SQL or connection details.
MySQL recommends short transactions, a consistent order when updating multiple tables, and indexes on conditions used by locking reads and updates. Deadlocks can still occur, and applications must handle the possibility that InnoDB rolls back a transaction as the deadlock victim. See MySQL deadlock guidance. If retrying a transient deadlock, retry the whole transaction from a clean state, with a bounded policy; do not continue as if the rolled-back writes succeeded.
Separate a tutorial setup from a deployed system
A compact JDBC example can demonstrate connections and SQL, but deployment also needs deliberate handling of credentials, connection configuration, transaction boundaries, database constraints, and failures. Document the JDK, Connector/J, and MySQL versions actually used in a build; the title alone does not identify them. The available official references establish JDBC and MySQL behavior, but not a particular project’s schema, cancellation rules, payment processing, or tested implementation.
