For a short, fixed command, use an alias. For a shortcut that needs arguments or several shell operations, use a Bash function. For reusable automation that should work as a named command outside your interactive shell setup, use a script. These choices reduce repeated typing and make routine tasks easier to invoke; no published measurement establishes how much time or productivity they save.
The examples below target Bash. Other shells can use different startup files and alias behavior, so check which shell you are running before applying them.
Choose the right tool for the repeated task
| Use | Best fit | Arguments and shell context |
|---|---|---|
| Alias | A short, fixed substitution for a command you type interactively. | Bash aliases do not provide a mechanism for arguments and are not expanded in non-interactive shells by default. |
| Function | A shortcut that accepts arguments, uses conditions, or combines related shell operations. | Runs in the current shell context, so it can affect that shell. |
| Script | Repeatable automation you want to invoke explicitly as a command, pass arguments to, or share independently of an interactive shell configuration. | Executed as a script in a shell invocation; it does not run in the current interactive shell context. |
The GNU Bash Reference Manual says, “For almost every purpose, shell functions are preferable to aliases.” That is a useful default when a shortcut needs logic or parameters; aliases remain handy for simple, fixed command substitutions.
Use an alias for a fixed interactive shortcut
An alias substitutes one command word for another when Bash reads a command. It is suited to a short command you want to type less often, not to a reusable command that needs parameters. Because Bash does not expand aliases in non-interactive shells by default, do not make a script depend on aliases from your interactive configuration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Add an alias to the startup file used by your interactive Bash, commonly ~/.bashrc for a non-login interactive shell. For example:
alias ll='ls -lah'
This defines a fixed replacement for ll; it does not create a general-purpose command that accepts arguments and inserts them into the replacement.

Use a function when the shortcut needs arguments or shell logic
A Bash function can accept arguments and group commands, making it a better fit when an alias would be too rigid. Functions execute in the current shell context. That matters when an operation needs to change the current shell rather than run in a separate process.
For example, a function can take a directory argument and change the current shell into it:

croot() {
cd "${1:-$HOME}"
}
With no argument, this example changes to the home directory; with a directory argument, it changes to that directory. Put interactive functions in the Bash startup file that your shell actually reads, then invoke them by name at the prompt.
Use a script for reusable, separately invoked automation
A Bash script is a text file containing shell commands. It can accept positional arguments and be made executable, which makes it appropriate for a repeatable task you want to invoke as a named command or use independently of an interactive shell configuration.

For example, save this as greet:
#!/usr/bin/env bash
printf 'Hello, %sn' "${1:-there}"
The interpreter line asks the system to find Bash through PATH, a pattern the GNU Bash manual describes as common. Make the file executable and run it:
chmod +x greet
./greet Alex
To invoke greet by name from any working directory, put the executable in a directory searched through your PATH. Check the value with printf '%sn' "$PATH". A script located outside those directories must be invoked by a path, such as ./greet.

Understand which Bash startup file to edit
The right place for an alias or function depends on how Bash starts. An interactive, non-login Bash reads ~/.bashrc. An interactive login Bash reads /etc/profile, followed by the first readable user file among ~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login, and ~/.profile. A common setup has ~/.bash_profile source ~/.bashrc, but that arrangement is not guaranteed.
Inspect your actual startup-file chain rather than assuming every terminal session reads the same file. After changing a file, either open a new shell that reads it or source the appropriate file in the current shell. For example, if the change is in ~/.bashrc, run:
source ~/.bashrc
Sourcing applies the file’s commands to the current shell. If you edited a different startup file, source that file instead, or start a shell that reads it.
Move from a quick alias to a durable command
If you are wondering how to put aliases “in a single function script,” first decide what should be available where. An alias or function defined in an interactive startup file is a convenience for shells that read that file. A script is a separate executable command; it should not rely on interactive aliases being expanded.

- Keep a fixed prompt-only substitution as an alias. Use it when it needs no argument handling or logic.
- Promote it to a function when behavior grows. Use a function for arguments, conditions, or related operations, especially when the operation must affect the current shell.
- Make it a script when it should stand alone. Put reusable automation in a script, give it an interpreter line, make it executable, and place it on
PATHif you want to invoke it by name.
Bash searches for a command name by checking shell functions first, then built-ins, then executable files in directories on PATH. This helps explain how an interactive convenience and a standalone command can share a name, but name collisions can make it unclear which one will run. Prefer distinct names, or inspect a name’s resolution with type name before relying on it.
Quick Recap
Apply and check a workflow change
- Choose the form. Use the task’s need for arguments, shell-state changes, and availability outside an interactive session to decide between an alias, function, and script.
- Put interactive definitions in the startup file your Bash reads. Check whether your terminal starts an interactive login or non-login shell, and inspect the corresponding startup-file chain.
- Put standalone automation in an executable script. Add an interpreter line, set the executable bit with
chmod +x, and place it in aPATHdirectory if it should be called by name. - Load and verify. Source the changed interactive file or open a new shell. Try the command with ordinary inputs and edge cases, including omitted or unexpected arguments, before depending on it.
