Build a data analyst agent by first narrowing the questions it should answer, then connecting only the data and tools those questions require. A practical first version is usually one ADK agent with purpose-built Python tools; you can prototype locally, evaluate it against representative tasks, and add cloud execution or deployment only when the use case calls for them.
1. Define the analyst’s job before coding
Start by writing down the questions the agent is allowed to answer and what it needs to answer them. Google’s Agents CLI development guide recommends scoping the problem, example questions, data sources, required tools and authentication, safety constraints, success criteria, and whether the first milestone is a prototype or a deployment. Read the Agents CLI development guide.
Make the boundaries concrete. For example, decide whether the first version may analyze an uploaded CSV, query a specific database, or both; which tables or columns it can access; and what it should do when a request is ambiguous or the available data cannot support an answer. Prefer narrowly scoped, read-only access when it is sufficient. Treat these as design choices for your application, not capabilities that ADK automatically guarantees.
2. Prototype the smallest useful ADK agent
Use the Agents CLI workflow to scaffold a prototype and validate the question-to-data path before committing to deployment infrastructure. The guide treats prototyping and deployment as separate stages, so a working local prototype does not need to begin as a cloud service. See the CLI development workflow.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For many initial analyst tasks, one agent plus a small set of tools is easier to inspect and evaluate than a multi-agent system. Add specialist agents or more elaborate orchestration only when responsibilities genuinely differ or the workflow needs parallel or iterative control. ADK describes sequential, parallel, and loop workflow agents as available patterns; more coordination also means more implementation complexity. Review ADK agent concepts and the CLI guide’s complexity levels.
3. Give the agent purpose-built data tools
In ADK, a custom tool can be a plain Python function added to the agent’s tools list. Its docstring becomes the description the model sees, so make the tool’s purpose, permitted operations, inputs, and returned result format explicit. Google’s tutorial puts it plainly: “ADK tools are plain Python functions. The docstring becomes the description the LLM sees, so write it clearly — it tells the model when and how to use the tool.” See the ADK tools documentation.

For a CSV-focused prototype, a tool might accept a validated file identifier and a limited analysis request, then return a small structured result such as a summary, row count, or calculation. For database-backed work, expose only the queries or operations the application intends to allow rather than treating arbitrary database access as the default. Make failures legible: if a requested column is absent or a query cannot run, return a clear error the agent can explain instead of implying that a result was computed.
Google’s resource index also lists a community tutorial titled “How to Build a Data Science Agent with ADK,” described as covering database queries, Python analysis, and BigQuery ML. The index explicitly identifies it as community material not supported by Google or the ADK team; treat it as an example pointer, not an official implementation guarantee. Find the tutorial in ADK’s resource index.

4. Choose where analysis code runs
For simple, bounded analysis, a purpose-built tool can keep the prototype straightforward. For code-heavy, multi-step work, Google’s Agent Runtime Code Execution tool is a documented sandboxed execution option. The current documentation describes persistent state across multiple calls and data-file support up to 100MB, and lists support in ADK Python v1.17.0. Those limits and compatibility details can change, so check the live documentation before implementation. Read the Agent Runtime Code Execution documentation.
This route has cloud prerequisites: the example requires a Google Cloud project with the Agent Platform API enabled, a sandbox environment, and an agent service account with the roles/aiplatform.user role. It is therefore not a requirement for every ADK prototype. Compare the choices by execution location and access needs, not by assuming one is more accurate:

| Choice | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Local prototype with focused tools | You need to validate a narrow question-and-data workflow before deployment. | You still need to design the tool’s permitted operations and data access; this is not the documented managed sandbox path. |
| Agent Runtime Code Execution | Analysis involves code-heavy or multi-step work and a managed sandbox fits the requirements. | Requires the documented cloud setup, sandbox, and service-account permissions. |
| Database-backed tools | The agent must answer questions over an approved database rather than just a bounded file. | Requires deliberate query and authentication boundaries; the community tutorial pointer is not an official guarantee of a particular implementation. |
5. Evaluate representative analyst tasks before deployment
Evaluation belongs in the build loop, not just in a final demo. ADK’s manual tutorial describes creating an evaluation dataset, configuring metrics, and running evaluation; the CLI guide recommends beginning with a small set of core cases, fixing failures, and then expanding. Read the ADK evaluation guide and the CLI eval-fix workflow.
Build a small dataset of requests and expected behavior that reflects your actual use case. Useful proposed cases include:

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- A calculation with a known answer, to check the result and whether the right tool was used.
- An ambiguous question, to check whether the agent asks for clarification rather than silently choosing an interpretation.
- A missing column, empty file, or unsuitable data range, to check that the agent identifies what it cannot establish.
- A tool or query failure, to check that the agent reports an error rather than inventing a result.
These are test cases to create for your agent, not results from a published benchmark. Fix failures and add cases as the range of supported questions grows.
6. Deploy and observe only when the use case needs it
When the prototype is ready to serve users, the tutorial’s Cloud Run flow adds a deployment target, sets the project, deploys, and checks deployment status. It says Cloud Trace is enabled by default in that flow. Prompt-response content logging is a separate setup that requires provisioning infrastructure. Follow the ADK Cloud Run deployment guide.
Tracing tool-call timing and logging prompt or response contents are not the same operational choice. Content logs may include user questions or data-derived outputs, so decide whether to collect them in light of your organization’s privacy and retention requirements; the deployment guide’s setup instructions do not determine those requirements for you. For an optional third-party integration, Freeplay’s ADK page describes observability, prompt management, evaluations, datasets, and batch testing. See the Freeplay integration page.
