To run a continuous lofi stream on YouTube with FFmpeg, prepare compatible media, list the tracks in an FFmpeg concat manifest, then send the resulting audio and video to YouTube Live using supported encoding settings. The concat demuxer plays files in sequence; it does not make mismatched files compatible or keep a failed process alive. A dependable 24/7 broadcast also needs monitoring and a plan for reconnecting.
What you need before building the stream
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live Control Room.
- Audio tracks and a visual: a static image, a looping video, or prepared video segments.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer or hosted machine that can reach your media and maintain an internet connection.
- A playlist whose files have compatible stream layouts if you plan to use the concat demuxer.
There is no universally specified server size for this job. Compute needs vary with resolution, frame rate, input formats, and whether FFmpeg copies or re-encodes streams. Choose a machine based on your actual processing workload, and test it before relying on it continuously.
Choose concat demuxer or concat filter
| Approach | When it fits | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Files already expose compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. | Reads files in sequence and adjusts timestamps, but does not normalize differing formats. Lower processing demand may be possible when streams can be copied. |
| Concat filter | Inputs differ and need to be re-encoded or brought into a consistent format. | Offers a re-encoding workflow and transition control, but requires processing. Exact filter graph and resource needs depend on the media. |
FFmpeg’s concat guidance explains the demuxer’s compatibility requirements and distinguishes it from the concat filter for cases requiring re-encoding: FFmpeg FAQ.
Prepare and normalize the lofi media
Decide how audio and visuals fit together
For an audio-first radio stream, you can use a static or looping visual as a separate video input while the playlist supplies audio. The precise inputs, mapping, and filter graph depend on your assets and FFmpeg build, so do not assume that a command written for one folder of files will work unchanged with another.

Make demuxer inputs compatible
Inventory the tracks and video segments. If using the concat demuxer, ensure each listed file has the same streams and compatible properties, including codecs and time bases. If the collection varies, create consistent intermediate files first or use a filter-and-re-encode workflow. This is a compatibility requirement, not an optional performance optimization.
Check that FFmpeg can read every path and that filenames with spaces, apostrophes, or other special characters are quoted and escaped correctly. Consult the documentation for the installed FFmpeg version, especially its concat script syntax and safe-path behavior.

Create the concat playlist manifest
Save a plain-text manifest such as playlist.ffconcat. A minimal example is:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →ffconcat version 1.0
file '/media/track-001.mp3'
file '/media/track-002.mp3'
file '/media/track-003.mp3'
Replace the example paths with readable paths to your own files. Keep the manifest and media available to the FFmpeg process for the full run; a path that works in an interactive shell may not work under a service account or after a machine restart.

Validate the playlist before connecting to YouTube
- Run a local decode or a short test output before publishing. Confirm every track opens and that audio remains present through each transition.
- Check that the visual and audio inputs are mapped intentionally, and that the result has the resolution and frame rate you intend to send.
- Pay attention to track durations. The concat demuxer uses duration information to position following files; inaccurate metadata can cause artifacts. FFmpeg documents a
durationdirective that can override a file’s stored duration when needed: FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation. - Test a representative section with the same kind of audio and motion you plan to broadcast, not only a silent still image or a single short file.
Set up YouTube Live and FFmpeg output
Get the ingest URL and protect the key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
- Copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, source control, or exposed logs.
- If the key is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder to use the new key. YouTube describes stream keys as functioning like a stream’s password and address: YouTube Help: Create a YouTube Live stream with an encoder.
Match the encoder settings to your output
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use its bitrate table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you select rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check the current guidance when configuring the encoder: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
An FFmpeg output command depends on whether you are using one media input or separate audio and video inputs, whether streams can be copied or must be encoded, your installed build, and your chosen output settings. Build the command around those actual assumptions; a generic one-line command cannot safely cover every file layout and is not an uptime guarantee.

Test, monitor, and plan for recovery
Check network capacity and stream health
Before going live, test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages while the encoder is running. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom in the relevant bandwidth calculation; available upload capacity must cover the selected stream bitrate and any simultaneous backup stream. Network interruptions can break a stream. See YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOperate it as a continuous service
A playlist command alone does not provide continuous-operation safeguards. For a 24/7 setup, keep media on storage that remains mounted and readable, capture logs, alert an operator if the process exits or output stalls, and decide how to restart FFmpeg and recover the YouTube connection. These are operational measures to implement for your environment, not guarantees made by FFmpeg or YouTube.

A local machine gives you direct control and access to a local media library, but depends on that machine, power, and network path staying available. Hosted compute can move the workload away from home, but provider choice, cost, reliability, and the right network path depend on your location and needs. The available official guidance does not establish a minimum server specification or rank hosting providers.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Concat reports stream or codec errors | Files have different stream layouts, codecs, or time bases. | Inspect the inputs and normalize them into a consistent set, or use a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes as needed. |
| Audio clicks, gaps, or timing artifacts at a transition | Incompatible inputs or inaccurate duration metadata can misplace timestamps. | Test each transition locally; verify durations and use the concat demuxer’s duration directive where a stored duration is inaccurate. |
| A track does not open | The path is wrong, inaccessible to the process, or improperly quoted. | Check the manifest path and permissions under the account running FFmpeg; correct quoting and escaping for special characters. |
| YouTube does not accept the encoder stream | Wrong stream URL or key, unsupported settings, or a compromised key. | Recheck the Live Control Room values and codec/bitrate guidance. Reset a compromised key and update the encoder. |
| Stream health degrades or disconnects | Insufficient upload headroom or a network interruption. | Measure available upload capacity against the selected bitrate, leave recommended headroom, and monitor YouTube’s health messages. |
| The broadcast stops after running for a while | The FFmpeg process exited, stalled, lost media access, or lost its connection. | Review logs, verify media remains mounted, set alerts for exit or stalled output, and implement a restart and reconnection procedure appropriate to the host. |
