For a simple 24/7 lofi stream, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source with Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist enabled, then send the encoder output to YouTube Live. That randomizes the playlist order, but it does not guarantee a fresh shuffle on every loop or prevent a track from repeating before the rest of your library plays. For strict no-repeat playback, use a history-aware scheduler that tracks which tracks have played and does not select them again until the pool is exhausted.

Choose the shuffle behavior you actually need

“Shuffle” can mean either a randomized order or a strict rule that no track repeats until every eligible track has played. Those are different requirements.

Approach What it does Repeat behavior Best fit
OBS VLC Video source with shuffle and loop Plays a media-file playlist in a randomized order and loops it. A shuffled order can repeat on later loops; a new order on each cycle and cross-cycle de-duplication are not established. Background-radio variety without a strict no-repeat rule.
History-aware playlist scheduler Stores played track IDs and selects only from tracks not yet played. Can prevent repeats until the eligible pool is exhausted if it is correctly implemented and retains its state. A strict no-repeat requirement.

Before choosing a scheduler, check whether it reshuffles each cycle, whether it can repeat a song before the whole library plays, how it recovers after a computer or OBS restart, which file formats and transitions it supports, and whether you can monitor it. No particular scheduler has been verified here, so confirm these capabilities for the tool you choose.

Clear the music rights before you stream

Use recordings and visuals your channel is authorized to livestream. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions say that you must have “all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world,” including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other rights participants.

A “royalty-free” label or permission to use a track in ordinary videos does not, by itself, establish that continuous livestreaming is allowed. Check the license scope for livestream use. YouTube may interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects third-party content, and even a licensed stream may be interrupted if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights holder about allowlisting where applicable.

Build a looping playlist in OBS

Prepare your files and scene

  1. Put the audio/video files you have rights to use in an organized folder and note which files belong in the broadcast library.
  2. Open OBS Studio and create a scene for the radio visuals. Add your background or other visual elements, then preview the scene and audio levels.
  3. Add a VLC Video source and add the media files to its playlist. OBS documents VLC Video as the playlist-capable source; its Media Sources guide says VLC must be installed. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

If VLC Video is missing, install the compatible VLC version and reopen OBS. OBS’s built-in Media Source can play individual files, but the playlist controls described here belong to VLC Video.

Set loop and shuffle

  1. Open the VLC Video source’s properties and enable Loop Playlist so playback starts again after the source reaches the end of its file list.
  2. Enable Shuffle Playlist to randomize the media-file order.
  3. Preview several transitions and confirm that both picture and sound are present before configuring YouTube.

These controls randomize the list and repeat it; OBS’s documentation does not promise a new permutation for every loop. The OBS source code applies a shuffle when source settings are updated, rather than documenting a history-aware draw after each track boundary. An OBS forum report describes a shuffled order repeating on later loops; that is an anecdotal report, while the source behavior supports the more limited conclusion that shuffle is not a strict anti-repeat feature.

How to enforce no repeats until the library is exhausted

If “without repeating” is a hard rule, use a scheduler with a played-history set rather than relying on OBS’s shuffle control. Its selection logic should assign each track a stable ID, choose only from tracks whose IDs are not in history, add the chosen ID after playback, and reset history only when every eligible track has been played.

  • Verify that the scheduler retains history across a restart; otherwise a crash can make already-played tracks eligible again.
  • Check what happens if a file is removed, fails to play, or is added while a cycle is in progress.
  • Confirm that it can run unattended and that its transitions and formats suit your media.
  • Test a small library first and inspect the playback log or history to confirm the no-repeat rule works across a full cycle and after a restart.

The OBS/VLC approach is documented, but no specific scheduler is established here as meeting these requirements. Treat a scheduler’s no-repeat claim as something to verify in its own documentation and in a controlled test.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to confirm your channel is eligible to livestream. YouTube’s getting-started guidance describes a verified channel without a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days; check your channel’s current Studio status because eligibility can change.
  2. In the Live Control Room, create or select an encoder stream. Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. If using a custom server configuration, enter the stream URL as well. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
  4. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming picture and sound to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Check the stream status and audio before selecting Go live.

YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers creating or selecting an encoder stream, while its live control room guidance explains preview and monitoring. For the first run, test privately or unlisted. Check that files advance, the playlist loops, levels are usable, and your computer and network remain stable before inviting an audience.

Keep the broadcast running and protect the replay

A playlist loop only governs media playback. OBS still has to produce and send the signal, and a network disruption can break the stream. YouTube’s streaming guidance recommends testing the setup, monitoring stream quality, using a reliable connection and leaving upload-bandwidth headroom. Check the Live Control Room during the broadcast and have a plan to restore the encoder if OBS, the computer or the connection fails. No device or service is established here as guaranteeing uninterrupted availability.

Live availability and archive capture are separate concerns. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive and DVR guidance recommends a local backup if the recording matters. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, so viewers may not be able to rewind the entire history of an ongoing 24/7 broadcast.

If a complete replay matters, record locally and size your storage against the recording bitrate and duration. You can instead plan shorter broadcast sessions, but ending and restarting interrupts the live audience; communicate a restart schedule if you choose that approach.
