To run a 24/7 YouTube livestream from prerecorded videos, send them to YouTube through an encoder: software on a computer, a hardware encoder, or a cloud service that streams uploaded files. Uploading a video to YouTube alone does not create a livestream. For a do-it-yourself setup, connect an encoder to YouTube Studio with the stream URL and stream key, configure a sustainable video feed, and test the full chain before leaving it unattended.
Choose how you will keep the stream running
Your encoder must continuously send a live feed to YouTube. Pick the operating model based on how much control you need and what equipment you can keep available.
Run streaming software on a computer
A local software encoder gives you control of the playback source and local production. The computer, encoder, power and internet connection all need to remain available for the feed to continue. YouTube does not specify a minimum computer model in its encoder setup guidance; choose hardware that can play and encode your chosen content while sustaining the required upload connection.

YouTube supports standalone hardware encoders as well as software encoders. Hardware may suit a production that already uses dedicated video equipment, but it is not a requirement for prerecorded playback. Before choosing one, confirm that it accepts your source files or playlist, supports YouTube ingestion, and has restart or reconnect behavior appropriate to your setup.

Use a cloud-hosted service
A cloud service can stream uploaded files without relying on your own computer to encode continuously. YouTube’s encoder documentation identifies Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. Features, file limits, pricing and recovery behavior vary by provider, so check current terms directly. Prepare the channel and source videos
Check live-stream eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to stream. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance. Confirm eligibility and enable live streaming before you schedule a continuous broadcast.

Check the videos and their rights
Being the person who uploaded a video does not establish that every element in it can be rebroadcast live. Review footage, music, stock assets, guest appearances and territorial restrictions. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to hold the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights; the terms also apply to archived content.
Plan for YouTube monetization rules
A loop does not assure monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy, updated July 15, 2025 to clarify its “inauthentic content” terminology, says repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible. Its reused-content policy is separate from copyright and considers whether the creator adds significant commentary, modification, or educational or entertainment value. The assessment is at channel level. Permission to use material does not by itself make a repetitive stream eligible for monetization. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Set up a local encoder with YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream. Follow the prompts to select the stream type and retrieve the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s instructions are in its encoder setup guide.
- Choose the YouTube destination in your encoder. If it does not offer a YouTube destination, enter the server URL and stream key manually. Treat the key like a password: it grants access to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Studio.
- Set the source and playlist behavior. Select the prerecorded video or playlist and enable looping if the encoder provides that control. Confirm what happens at the end of a file, between items, and after a playback error. Do not assume a single video will repeat unless you have checked the setting or tested it.
- Configure a supported stream format. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval. It supports H.264, HEVC and AV1 in the scenarios listed in its encoder settings guidance. Select the resolution and frame rate your upload connection can sustain; use the matching bitrate range in YouTube’s settings page rather than copying a value for a different format.
- Start encoding and wait for the preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s instructions say to wait for the preview and then use the Live Control Room to go live. Check the preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast.
- Monitor playback and end it deliberately. Confirm that audio and video continue as expected. When ending the broadcast, stop sending content and end the stream in Studio as applicable.
Choose an ingestion protocol and settings
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended protocol for encoder streaming. HLS is another ingestion option when your encoder supports it, including for certain codec and HDR use cases. HLS requires particular segment formats and playlist behavior, and YouTube notes that it has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP feed. For an ambient or prerecorded loop that does not need low-latency interaction, encoder compatibility and any required codec or HDR features are the practical deciding factors. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements.
- Bitrate: Match the bitrate to the target resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s encoder settings table, then test whether your sustained upload connection can support it. Avoid choosing a bitrate solely from a different resolution or frame rate’s recommendation.
- Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds, as YouTube recommends.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Codec: Use a codec supported for the selected scenario. YouTube lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 in its settings guidance; encoder and protocol compatibility still matter.
- Secure transport: Prefer RTMPS unless your requirements and encoder support point to another ingestion option.
Test reliability before leaving the stream unattended
Run an unlisted or private test of the complete setup. YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview and monitoring stream quality in its livestreaming tips.

- Verify the intended video and audio play correctly and the preview appears in the Live Control Room.
- Open the watch page on another device and confirm it plays for a viewer.
- Let the source reach its end and check that the next item starts or the video loops as intended.
- Check encoder and YouTube stream health over a meaningful test period at the resolution and bitrate you plan to use.
- Test what happens after an internet interruption, power loss, encoder crash, expired credential or source-file error. These are operational risks, not events YouTube promises to recover from automatically.
- If your encoder or service offers restart, reconnect or failover controls, trigger a test recovery before depending on them. YouTube discusses testing encoder failover for events, but does not promise automatic failover for every encoder or account.
Plan for archives and long broadcasts
YouTube says livestreams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder guidance does not promise a complete archive for streams longer than 12 hours. If preserving a replay matters, consider splitting programming into shorter scheduled sessions and confirm the current behavior in YouTube Studio. Do not rely on one uninterrupted daylong broadcast to produce a complete replay.
