You can run a 24/7 ambient channel by looping a rights-cleared playlist through an encoder that sends a continuous live feed to YouTube. YouTube provides the live event and ingest connection; a computer running streaming software or a cloud service supplies and repeats the prerecorded video. Before launch, clear the rights, confirm channel eligibility, test the feed, and decide what happens if it drops.
How a 24/7 prerecorded channel works
YouTube distinguishes the viewer-facing live event from the audio-video feed sent to it. In its API, a liveBroadcast is the event viewers watch, while a liveStream carries the content to YouTube. The feed therefore needs a playback system that can sequence or loop your recordings and an encoder or managed service to transmit them. YouTube’s broadcast tools do not themselves provide a prerecorded playlist playout system. Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams includes an example of a continuing 24/7 broadcast.
The first decision is where playback and encoding will run. A local setup gives you direct control, but the computer, software, and internet connection must remain available. A hosted setup moves playback and encoding off your computer; check the provider’s destination support, playlist controls, recovery behavior, price, and account terms before relying on it.

1. Clear the video and audio rights
Confirm that you have permission for continuous live transmission of every video, music track, image, and other third-party element in the playlist. If you intend to retain or replay an archive, confirm those rights as well. Keep written permissions and any confirmation that your channel has been allowlisted in Content ID.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. It may replace a stream with a placeholder and warn you; if the matched content remains, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. A license by itself may not prevent automated interruption: YouTube instructs creators using licensed third-party material to ask the rights owner to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end the stream. Read YouTube’s current guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
- Do not assume that “royalty-free,” purchased, or licensed means YouTube will not detect or interrupt the feed.
- Check that permissions cover the territories and duration relevant to your channel’s use.
- Plan archive behavior with the rights holder. YouTube says Content ID claims on an archived live stream are made after the stream completes if you choose to archive it.
2. Check that the channel can go live
YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. It also lists an age requirement of at least 16. Platform requirements and limits can change, so verify the channel’s status and the current rules in YouTube Studio before scheduling a launch.

3. Prepare the playlist and playback method
Arrange your recordings in the order you want them to play, then choose software or a hosted service that can keep supplying that sequence continuously. YouTube supports encoder-based live streaming, but the precise playlist and looping controls depend on your playback software or provider.
For a local encoder
Install and configure streaming software on a computer that can stay on for the duration of the channel. Add the prerecorded files in the desired sequence and configure the software to repeat them or otherwise maintain a continuous program. Test that the end of one file transitions to the next as intended and that audio and video remain present. The exact controls vary by software; YouTube Studio should not be treated as the playlist player on the basis of YouTube’s broadcast documentation.

For a hosted workflow
Choose a service only after confirming that it can play your prerecorded sequence continuously and send it to YouTube. Check how it handles looping, stream interruption, monitoring, storage, billing, and access to your stream key. A cloud service avoids depending on a home computer staying on, but that alone does not establish the service’s reliability or terms.
4. Create the YouTube live event and connect the feed
- In YouTube’s live-streaming workflow, create a live broadcast and choose the encoder method. Follow the current Studio prompts to configure the event; labels and available options may change.
- Obtain the stream connection details YouTube provides for the event and enter them in your encoder or hosted service. Treat the stream key as a password: keep it private, do not post it in screenshots or logs, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Start the playback and encoder, then confirm the event receives the feed and reports a healthy status before sharing it as live.
- Keep track of the broadcast and the feed as separate pieces. Google documents a 24/7 pattern in which an ongoing broadcast remains live while a second broadcast briefly uses the same stream; completing that second broadcast does not stop the underlying video feed. That API example is useful for understanding the distinction, not a substitute for checking the settings of your own event.
5. Test stream health and plan recovery
Run a test before the public launch. Check YouTube’s stream status and health information, and watch the encoder’s connection and dropped-frame indicators. The YouTube LiveStreams reference lists configuration issues such as low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and no audio stream. OBS notes that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a connection that cannot sustain the selected bitrate. See the OBS Help Portal and YouTube’s LiveStreams reference.

There is no universal bitrate or computer specification established for every recording and connection. Use the encoder’s recommended settings for your content, then test at the intended output configuration. If health warnings or dropped frames appear, reduce the sending bitrate or resolve the connection/capacity issue, then test again. Define who will notice an interruption and how the feed will be restarted or switched; neither YouTube’s documentation nor an encoder’s health indicators guarantee uninterrupted service.
