You can run a reggae station as a continuous YouTube live stream by sending a steady audio-and-video feed from an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room. Before going live, verify the channel, confirm that you have the necessary live-stream rights for every recording and territory, and test the entire setup. YouTube documents a 24/7 live-feed use case, but that is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service or automatic recovery.

How a continuous YouTube radio stream works

YouTube carries a live audio/video feed; it is not a traditional radio playout service or a source of music rights. Your encoder sends the station program—reggae tracks plus a visual such as station artwork or a schedule—to YouTube. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents a channel broadcasting a 24/7 feed, with an optional separate broadcast for an interview using the same incoming stream. That API-managed arrangement is advanced; a single broadcast and encoder is the simpler starting point. Google for Developers: YouTube Live Streaming API – Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

Clear music rights before configuring the station

Rights are the most important operational risk. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches, and a stream may be interrupted or terminated. Permission to possess or play a recording does not automatically establish permission to broadcast it live on YouTube in every territory.

  • Inventory every recording you plan to play and identify the relevant rights holders, labels, or distributors.
  • Confirm that your permission covers the actual use: continuous live streaming on YouTube, the territories where viewers may access it, and any planned archive of the stream.
  • Where a rights holder or distributor uses Content ID, ask whether your channel must be added to its allowlist. YouTube says even licensed music may need allowlisting to avoid interruptions.
  • Keep written permissions and any allowlisting confirmation accessible to the people monitoring the station. A note in the video description saying that the music is licensed is not a substitute for clearance.

Rights requirements depend on the repertoire, territories, and operating facts. YouTube’s guidance does not determine the legal requirements for a particular station or country. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

Prepare and enable your YouTube channel

  1. Verify the channel and confirm it has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube Help lists these as live-stream eligibility requirements: Get started with live streaming.
  2. If this is your first live stream, enable live streaming well ahead of launch. YouTube for Artists advises enabling it at least 24 hours before the planned first broadcast: YouTube for Artists: Live streaming.
  3. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. Use the stream details YouTube provides to configure the encoder; do not reuse a stream key publicly or share it with people who should not control the broadcast.

Choose an encoder and set a stable stream

YouTube recommends encoder-based streaming for productions such as concerts, where overlays and hardware may be useful. Choose an encoder that can run your playlist continuously, control audio and visuals, and send RTMPS if supported. YouTube documents H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Follow the current settings shown in YouTube’s stream details and guidance: YouTube Help: Encoder settings for live streaming.

  • Set the video resolution and bitrate to match the visual plan and the stable upload capacity available to the encoder. A reggae radio feed with static artwork does not benefit automatically from a high resolution; avoid selecting a larger video stream unless the visual experience warrants it.
  • Use the encoder’s audio controls to keep the program clear and consistent without clipping. Listen to the output, not just the playlist files, because encoder settings and source levels affect what viewers hear.
  • Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder exposes those settings. Do not exceed YouTube’s stated four-second keyframe interval.
  • Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it, and enter the current server and stream-key details from YouTube Live Control Room.

YouTube’s cited guidance does not set a minimum computer specification or guarantee that a particular encoder will restart automatically. Test the chosen computer, encoder, and settings together rather than assuming a model or configuration will work.

Test the complete chain before going public

  1. Create an unlisted test broadcast in YouTube Studio / Live Control Room. YouTube for Artists recommends an unlisted test before launch.
  2. Start the encoder and confirm YouTube receives the feed and displays a healthy stream status. Check the stream key, connection, and any warnings in Live Control Room.
  3. Listen for a representative stretch of the playlist. Check for silence between tracks, clipping, abrupt level changes, missing files, and whether the playlist advances as intended.
  4. Check that the visual is present and appropriate throughout: artwork, schedule, or another visual you are permitted to use.
  5. Test the upload connection under realistic conditions and leave the feed running long enough to exercise normal playlist transitions. A successful short test is useful, but does not establish guaranteed long-term uptime.

Launch and monitor the continuous broadcast

When rights checks and the unlisted test are complete, start the scheduled broadcast publicly through the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room. Assign someone to monitor stream status, audio continuity, and YouTube notices. Set out who will respond if the encoder, computer, power, or internet connection fails, and how that person will restore the feed.

If a stream stops, check YouTube Studio for strikes and review the Live Control Room status before restarting. YouTube’s guidance calls for checking Studio when a live stream stops; it does not promise uninterrupted operation or automatic restart. YouTube for Artists: Live streaming.

Decide separately whether to archive the stream

An ongoing live broadcast is scanned while it is live. If you choose to archive it, YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream completes. Archiving is a separate choice from running the live feed and should be included in your rights review. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

When an API-managed second broadcast makes sense

A basic encoder workflow is enough for one continuous station broadcast. YouTube’s API example describes a more advanced case: keep the 24/7 broadcast live while creating a separate video for an interview that occurs during it, using the same incoming stream. Consider that approach only if the station needs a separate event video and someone can operate the API workflow; it adds operational complexity that a single always-on broadcast avoids. Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube will not allow the channel to go live The channel is not verified, has a live-stream restriction, or first-time enablement is still pending. Review channel eligibility in YouTube Help and allow time for first-time live-stream enablement before the scheduled start.
The encoder cannot connect Incorrect or outdated stream details, unsupported connection settings, or an unstable upload path. Copy the current server and key from Live Control Room, use RTMPS if supported, and inspect encoder and YouTube status.
The stream is interrupted while music plays A third-party match or rights-holder restriction may have triggered enforcement. Review YouTube notices and Studio for strikes; contact the relevant rights holder or distributor about live-stream permission and Content ID allowlisting.
The stream drops after a computer, power, or network issue The sending encoder or its connection stopped. Restore the encoder and connection, then check Live Control Room status. Establish a human response and recovery process; automatic recovery is not established by YouTube’s cited guidance.
Audio is silent, distorted, or interrupted between songs Encoder audio routing, source level, or playlist continuity may be wrong. Listen to the unlisted output, check encoder input and output meters, and test transitions across a representative playlist segment.
Artwork or video is missing The encoder’s visual source or scene may not be active. Check the selected scene and preview in the encoder, then confirm the received image in Live Control Room.
