You can broadcast a podcast season continuously on YouTube Live by scheduling an encoder-based stream, then sending a prepared sequence of episodes from an encoder or streaming-automation workflow. YouTube provides the event, ingest settings, and stream key; you decide how episodes transition, whether they repeat, and how the feed recovers if it stops. Test those choices before sharing the event.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and episode rights
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions within the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned broadcast. The streamer must be at least 16 years old. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- Confirm that you have permission to use every episode, music track, intro, outro, image, and other material in the live broadcast. A podcast’s availability on other platforms does not itself establish that you have the rights to rebroadcast it on YouTube.
- Choose an encoder or automation workflow that can play the episode sequence and send it to YouTube. OBS is one encoder option named by YouTube; YouTube’s encoder documentation does not define a built-in podcast-season playlist workflow or endorse a particular automation service.
Plan the season feed before scheduling
Decide what plays and when
Prepare the episode order and decide whether each episode plays once or the season repeats. Specify what viewers see and hear between episodes—for example, a short slate or a transition—and test the transition from one episode to the next. These are production decisions, not settings YouTube automatically supplies for a podcast season.
Plan for interruption and recovery
Decide who or what will notice a stopped feed, how it will be restarted, and where playback should resume. Test a restart rather than assuming that an encoder or automation workflow will recover in the way you want. YouTube’s documentation explains how an encoder connects to the platform, but it does not establish the reliability or recovery behavior of third-party automation products.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a single season-length broadcast running 12 hours or longer will produce a complete automatic replay. If a reliable replay matters, divide the season into shorter sessions and verify each archive, or make a separate local recording.

Schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Open Manage and schedule a stream. Scheduling creates an event you can share and promote before it begins. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe this workflow: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Enter the event title and description, choose visibility, and set any other available metadata deliberately. Make sure the details describe a continuous podcast-season feed accurately.
- Review the event page and the rights for all material that will appear or play during the broadcast before promoting it.
Connect the encoder and choose stream settings
Use the stream URL and protect the key
Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event in YouTube Studio into the corresponding encoder fields. The key authorizes the encoder to send video to your channel, so treat it like a password. If it is exposed or compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it; YouTube describes RTMPS as the encrypted form of RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Match resolution and bitrate to the feed and connection
For H.264 at 1080p and 30 frames per second, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum bitrate and 14 Mbps as its recommended bitrate. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval. These are platform ingest recommendations, not a requirement to stream every podcast at 1080p; choose a resolution and frame rate your graphics, encoder, and upload connection can sustain. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and resolution-specific bitrate guidance for other formats.

Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the combined bitrate of the stream. Check upload speed, not download speed, and leave room for other devices and activity sharing the connection. A speed test under light household use may not reflect the connection during the actual broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

Test, then start the continuous broadcast
- Set up the event in advance. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Start the encoder early and open the event preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that video and audio are present, the correct episode is playing, and the event is accessible as intended.
- Test at least one episode transition and any planned repeat or restart behavior. If you intend to make a local recording, confirm it is being saved and can be played back.
- Check stream health in Live Control Room before the scheduled start and monitor it during the broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover setup and stream health.
- Start the event according to the selected YouTube and encoder start behavior. Verify the watch page from a viewer’s perspective rather than relying only on the encoder’s status.
Set viewer controls and latency
YouTube’s DVR feature lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream. Lower latency is useful when you are interacting with viewers in real time; for a prerecorded season feed with little interaction, normal latency may be sufficient. YouTube also offers auto-start and auto-stop controls. Check those choices in the event setup and include them in your test so the event starts and ends as intended. DIY troubleshooting: common problems and fixes
- The encoder cannot connect: Check that the stream URL and key match the scheduled event, that the key has not been reset, and that the encoder is using a supported ingest method. Use RTMPS if available. If the key was exposed, reset it and replace it in the encoder.
- The preview is missing or keeps buffering: Check upload speed and compare available capacity with the stream’s combined bitrate, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the selected settings, then test again.
- Audio or video is absent, wrong, or out of sync: Check the encoder’s selected sources and the episode file itself. Preview representative material before launch, including an episode transition; a successful connection alone does not confirm that the program feed is correct.
- The next episode does not start or the season does not repeat: Check the sequence and playback behavior in the encoder or automation workflow. YouTube’s ingest connection does not create or manage the season playlist for you.
- The stream stops and does not resume as expected: Follow the recovery procedure you tested, check encoder and network status, and confirm that the event remains available in Live Control Room. Do not assume a particular third-party workflow will restart automatically.
- The broadcast replay is incomplete or absent: Check the stream duration and the event archive. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; use shorter sessions or a separate local recording when a complete replay is important.
