You can broadcast an authorized local news radio feed continuously on YouTube by sending it through a live encoder: create a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, give the encoder YouTube’s stream URL and stream key, and supply a video layer along with the station audio. Before going live, confirm YouTube eligibility and rights, test the stream and its upload capacity, and plan for monitoring and recovery. A continuous setup is not guaranteed to stay uninterrupted simply because it has been configured.
What you need before you start
- An eligible YouTube channel. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup guide.
- Permission to distribute the full feed. Make sure the station’s agreements cover live distribution on YouTube and, if applicable, YouTube’s archived copy. The feed may include syndicated segments, music, guests, or other material with separate rights.
- An encoder and a video component. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders. A radio-only audio feed still needs an appropriate visual component for an audiovisual stream, such as a station graphic or other authorized visual; select an encoder workflow that can combine it with the feed.
- A stable upload connection and an operator plan. The connection must handle the complete outgoing stream with headroom. Someone should be responsible for monitoring stream health and responding if the source, encoder, or network fails.
How to set up the continuous broadcast
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, verify the channel and confirm that live streaming is available. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Clear the content rights. Confirm in writing that the station feed, music, news audio, graphics, and any other included content may be transmitted on YouTube. Check whether the agreement also covers the stream archive and the territories where viewers may watch. Requirements vary with the station’s contracts and applicable law.
- Create the stream in Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Enter the connection details in the encoder. Configure your chosen software or standalone hardware encoder to send to YouTube using the supplied URL and key. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a signal to your stream. Keep it out of public documents and rotate it if exposed.
- Connect the station audio and visual. Route the authorized radio program into the encoder and add the visual required by your setup. Check audio levels and confirm the intended program—not a monitor mix, silence, or unintended studio audio—is what the encoder receives.
- Set compatible output parameters. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the ordinary encoder workflow, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. For stereo audio, its recommended bitrate is 128 Kbps; its guidance gives 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio. Select video resolution and bitrate based on the visual and your actual upload capacity. In YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations, 1080p at 30 fps is 5 Mbps, 480p at 30 fps is 3 Mbps, and 360p at 30 fps has a 0.4 Mbps minimum. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Test before relying on it. Start the encoder, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and check the watch page, audio, visual, and connection. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth at least 20% above the total stream bitrate; account for a backup stream as well if your setup sends one. See YouTube’s network guidance.
- Go live and monitor. Once the preview and health checks are satisfactory, start the broadcast in the encoder and confirm it is live in Studio. Monitor the stream and keep documented recovery steps for loss of the audio source, encoder failure, or network failure. If you have a backup encoder, rehearse failover rather than assuming it will work.
Choose a continuous-stream plan and protect the archive
A continuously running stream needs more than a successful initial connection: decide who will monitor it, how the station will restore the feed after a failure, and whether the broadcast should be one long session or a sequence of planned streams. YouTube recommends preparing and testing the setup, checking preview and stream health, and monitoring quality while live; those steps do not certify any particular configuration as uninterrupted.
One long session or shorter planned streams?
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that a single uninterrupted 24-hour-or-longer session will be saved as one archive. If preserving recordings matters, plan shorter sessions and verify the archive behavior in your channel’s Studio interface. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Software or standalone hardware encoder?
YouTube supports both. The official guidance does not establish a universal cost or operational advantage for either approach. Choose based on the encoder you can configure to accept the station audio and visual, the people available to operate it, and the recovery plan you can actually maintain.

Rights, restrictions, and monetization
YouTube’s terms put responsibility on the provider to have the rights needed to use live content on Google services, including applicable music rights, and to comply with relevant laws and territory-specific licensing requirements. A station’s broadcast permission or syndication agreement does not automatically establish that YouTube distribution or archiving is covered; check the specific contract and get advice appropriate to the station’s jurisdiction. See YouTube’s Terms of Service.
YouTube identifies an active live-stream copyright strike and a live stream matching another copyrighted live broadcast as potential reasons for live-stream restrictions. Since a local news feed can include third-party programming or music, resolve rights questions before transmission rather than relying on a takedown or restriction notice as the first signal. See YouTube’s live-stream restrictions guidance.

Common problems and what to check
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification and whether the channel has had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. For a first stream, allow the activation period of up to 24 hours.
- The encoder cannot connect: Recheck the stream URL, stream key, and selected protocol against the stream created in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in Studio and update the encoder.
- The preview is blank or the radio feed has no visual: Confirm that the encoder is supplying a video component and that the correct visual source is selected.
- Audio is silent, wrong, or distorted: Check the encoder’s selected audio input, station routing, levels, and the chosen audio format and bitrate. Listen to the preview or watch page before treating the stream as ready.
- Stream health is poor or the broadcast drops: Check actual upload capacity against the total stream bitrate, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Inspect network stability and encoder output settings; if a backup path is part of the plan, test it under realistic conditions.
- Music or third-party content triggers a restriction: Revisit the rights for the specific YouTube live use and archive, and review the channel’s notices in Studio. A station’s permission to broadcast over radio may not by itself cover YouTube.
- A 24-hour archive is missing or incomplete: The cited YouTube guidance confirms automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a single archive for a 24-hour session. Check Studio and consider shorter planned sessions if archive preservation is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the station’s use case is an authorized pre-recorded program or playlist rather than a live microphone feed, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos in the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; the uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. It is for uploaded videos, not a live studio camera or direct live radio source, so it is not a substitute for encoding the station’s actual live feed. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
