You can broadcast a jazz radio station continuously on YouTube by sending a prepared audio-and-video feed through a live encoder. Before you start, make sure your channel is eligible for live streaming, choose whether an always-on computer or a cloud service will run the feed, and clear the rights for every recording you plan to use. YouTube’s technical settings help deliver the stream; they do not grant music rights.

What you need for a 24/7 jazz stream

A radio-style YouTube Live broadcast combines audio with a video signal, such as a station image or simple animation. YouTube does not supply the music or the visual programming: your encoder sends the feed you produce.

  • A YouTube channel that is eligible for live streaming.
  • Jazz recordings you have the necessary rights to stream in the relevant territories.
  • An audiovisual feed and an encoder or cloud relay capable of sending it continuously.
  • A dependable internet connection, with upload capacity above the stream’s bitrate.
  • A plan for checking stream health and responding to interruptions.

Choose how to keep the broadcast running

The key operational choice is what keeps sending the feed to YouTube. A local encoder gives you direct control but relies on the computer, power, network, and someone monitoring the setup. A cloud service can relay prerecorded video without leaving a dedicated computer running at home.

Option How it works Trade-off
StreamNeo Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and start the stream. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing at home has to stay on to keep the relay running. It is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
Local computer with encoder software Run an encoder such as OBS on a computer and send its audiovisual output to YouTube. YouTube lists OBS as free, open-source streaming software. The computer, power, internet connection, and operator monitoring all become part of the setup.
Other cloud encoder YouTube’s verified-encoder list includes Gyre for continuous streaming of prerecorded videos. Check the provider’s current pricing, features, and uptime terms before choosing it; those details are not established here.
Broadcast-grade cloud processing YouTube lists AWS Elemental MediaLive as a broadcast-grade service. This is an advanced option; the cited listing does not establish whether it is cost-effective for one jazz station.

For an ordinary prerecorded jazz rotation, a local encoder is a practical do-it-yourself route. A spare computer is not automatically reliable just because it can run the software: power loss, an operating-system restart, or a home internet outage can interrupt the stream. No option should be treated as a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime.

Check YouTube Live eligibility before launch

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its current help page says live streamers must be at least 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so activate and test the feature well before the planned launch.

Use YouTube’s live-stream setup and encoder guidance at YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming. Labels and availability can change, so follow the current instructions shown for your channel and region.

Set up a continuous stream with a local encoder

  1. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming setup for your channel and complete any verification or activation steps YouTube requests. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
  2. Prepare the program feed. Arrange the jazz audio and a suitable visual, such as a station graphic or low-motion animation. Confirm that the source files can play continuously and that the audio levels are consistent. The music must be cleared for streaming before it is included.
  3. Install an encoder. YouTube lists OBS as free, open-source streaming software. Download it from its official source, add the audio and visual sources, and configure the output as a live stream. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the connection workflow at Set up your encoder.
  4. Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create the live stream or select the scheduled broadcast, then copy the stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
  5. Choose compatible output settings. YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, plus AAC or MP3 audio. Use constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder settings for current guidance.
  6. Set resolution and bitrate to match the feed and connection. Do not target 4K just because it is available: choose a resolution and bitrate appropriate to your visuals and actual upload capacity. Higher settings require more upload bandwidth and do not improve a simple station image.
  7. Start a test broadcast. Send representative audio and visuals to YouTube, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, and check playback from the watch page and a mobile device before committing to a continuous schedule.
  8. Keep the encoder and computer available. For the local method, the computer must remain powered on, connected, and running the encoder. Disable avoidable sleep or restart behavior, keep the machine ventilated, and have a plan to restore the encoder if it stops.

Protect stream quality and recover from network problems

YouTube says the stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Run an upload speed test under realistic conditions and allow extra capacity if other household or office devices share the connection. A network disruption can break the live feed, so monitor stream health rather than assuming that a successful start means the stream will remain healthy.

  • Stream health shows instability: reduce the encoder bitrate or resolution, check competing network traffic, and confirm your upload connection has enough headroom.
  • The preview has no audio: verify the encoder’s selected audio source, confirm playback at the source, and check that the audio codec and output settings are supported.
  • The video is frozen or blank: check that the visual source is active in the encoder and that the encoder is still sending data.
  • The encoder stops: restart it, reconnect with the correct stream key, and verify the stream in Live Control Room. For a local setup, check for power, sleep, software-update, or network interruptions.
  • YouTube interrupts the stream over a music match: review the rights and Content ID steps below; changing bitrate or restarting does not resolve a rights claim.

YouTube’s guidance also describes stream and stream-key limits: up to 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key. These limits matter if you plan to run multiple broadcasts concurrently; check the current encoder guidance for the applicable details.

Clear the music rights before broadcasting

Buying an album, subscribing to a music service, or owning a recording does not by itself establish permission to retransmit it in a worldwide YouTube Live broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights for the territories where the live content is available, including music rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. The exact permissions depend on your location, audience territories, catalogue, ownership, and existing agreements; there is no universal licence route that can be specified without those details.

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for third-party content. A live feed using music can be interrupted if a match is detected. Even when you have a licence, ask the relevant rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; otherwise, a stream may still be interrupted. YouTube explains the matching and interruption process in its copyright help.
