You can send a community radio station’s program directly to YouTube without using the station’s website player. Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, route the station’s audio and a visual through an encoder, then connect that encoder to YouTube with the server URL and stream key. Before going live, confirm the channel is eligible and that the station’s rights cover YouTube and any archive.

What you need before setup

  • A verified YouTube channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it well before the broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
  • An encoder that can take in the station’s audio and send an audio/video feed to YouTube. YouTube supports encoders and external audio/video hardware, but the right connection depends on the station’s mixer, playout system and computer.
  • A visual for the stream, such as a station logo or program graphic. YouTube’s live stream is audiovisual, even when the main content is radio audio.
  • Confirmation that the station has the necessary rights for the YouTube simulcast, including any music and any retained recording.

Check music and broadcast rights first

Do not assume that permission to broadcast terrestrially or stream through the station website also covers YouTube or an archived video. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. Which local licenses and agreements apply depends on the station’s country, catalog, territories and contracts; have the station’s rights administrator check them before launch.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies copyrighted material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn the station, or temporarily interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even when a station has a license, YouTube warns that a stream can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask relevant rights owners about allowlisting before relying on a music-heavy simulcast. An archived live video may receive Content ID claims after the stream ends. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Set up the YouTube stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Choose the Stream tab to create a stream immediately, or use Manage to schedule a broadcast. A scheduled stream provides a watch-page URL that the station can share in advance. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
  2. In Live Control Room, copy the stream’s server URL and stream key. In the encoder’s streaming settings, paste those values into the matching server and key fields. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to the stream. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Studio and update the encoder.
  3. Connect the station’s program audio to the encoder. If the encoder computer cannot accept a usable output from the mixer or playout system, the station may need an appropriate external audio interface. Check output type, connectors and computer inputs first; a particular device is not universally required.
  4. Add a visual source to the encoder scene, such as a logo or program graphic, and confirm that both audio and video are included in the outgoing feed.

Test, start and monitor the broadcast

  1. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder and wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room before selecting Go live.
  2. Where appropriate, test with a private or unlisted stream first. Check the watch page on both a phone and a computer, confirm the audio is clear, and make sure the visual appears as intended.
  3. During the broadcast, monitor the outgoing audio and video. YouTube’s live-streaming tips also recommend checking that a local recording is being written.

End the stream and keep a recording

End the broadcast in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. If the station needs a dependable copy, record locally, and confirm that the relevant rights cover the archive as well as the live transmission. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems

Problem Likely cause What to check
Live streaming is unavailable The channel is not verified, has a recent live-stream restriction, or first-time enablement is still processing. Check channel eligibility and enable live streaming ahead of time; first-time access can take up to 24 hours.
No preview appears in Live Control Room The encoder may not be sending a feed, or its server URL or stream key may be incorrect. Check the encoder’s streaming settings against the values shown in Studio and confirm the encoder is running.
The stream has a picture but no program audio The station audio may not be connected to the encoder, or the selected input may not be the one receiving the program. Check the signal path from the mixer or playout output to the encoder’s audio input. If needed, determine whether the computer requires an external audio interface.
YouTube interrupts the music stream Automated copyright detection may identify third-party material; a rights owner may not have allowlisted the channel. Review the station’s rights and contact relevant rights owners about allowlisting. Do not assume an existing radio or website license resolves YouTube interruptions.
A long broadcast is missing from the archive YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours. For broadcasts where retention matters, write a local recording and verify it is being saved during the event.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded programming looping on a YouTube channel rather than send a live signal from the station’s mixer, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at the station or at home. It streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos and playlists, not a live camera or mixer feed. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
