For Firefox 157, Mozilla Support forum users report that setting browser.nova.enabled to false in about:config brings back the previous interface. It is a community-reported workaround, not an officially supported rollback switch, and it may not be available or work in later versions.

If the interface does not change right away, restart Firefox.
Mozilla Support forum users reported this method for Firefox 157, including a reply advising users to set the preference to false and restart: Firefox 157: “Tab and button design”. Another user described wanting to “revert back to the look of Firefox 156 or earlier” and reported the preference as a solution: “In Firefox 157, how to revert back to the look of Firefox 156 or earlier?”.
Those reports concern user experiences in late September and early October 2026. They do not establish that the preference exists on every platform or release channel, or that it will remain in later builds. If the preference is missing, this method is not available in your installation.
What Mozilla supports—and what it does not
Mozilla warns that changing advanced preferences can cause unexpected behavior. Its Support article, “Firefox advanced customization and configuration options,” states: “Mozilla does not officially support adding custom style rules with a userChrome.css or userContent.css file, or using the Configuration Editor (about:config page) to modify preference settings.” Mozilla also notes that future updates can affect these customizations.

That means the reported preference change should be treated as an experiment, not a guaranteed or permanent way to restore Firefox 156’s interface. If you encounter problems after changing it, return to about:config, search for the same preference, and restore its previous value if you recorded it. If you did not, use Firefox’s Troubleshoot Mode to help identify whether customization is involved.
Other ways to adjust Firefox’s appearance
| Option | What it can do | Setup and support | How completely it restores the old interface |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in customization and themes | Adjust toolbar layout or change the browser’s appearance. | Use Firefox’s built-in customization tools or choose a theme. These are the lower-complexity options. | Not established by the cited sources; they do not prove a theme recreates the complete former interface. |

Firefox 157 users report that it brings back the previous interface. | Requires editing an advanced preference. Mozilla does not officially support changes made through about:config. |

Custom userChrome.css |
Can restyle Firefox interface elements, including colors and sizes. | Requires editing profile files and CSS knowledge. Mozilla does not officially support these rules; updates to interface markup can break them. | Not established by the cited sources. |
Mozilla’s guidance covers the built-in customization feature and themes. A Mozilla Support community reply also suggests looking for a Proton-style theme, but that is a user suggestion rather than an official restoration method; check current availability before relying on it.
Why custom CSS is not the easy first fix
A userChrome.css file can target more interface details than a theme, but it is an advanced customization that must be placed in Firefox’s profile. Mozilla’s Contributors guide says custom CSS is intended for developers rather than end users, and warns that interface changes can break custom rules: “Contributors guide on Firefox advanced customization with CSS”.

Should you install an older Firefox version?
Do not treat reinstalling Firefox 156 or another older release as the default solution. A forum poster reported a profile complaint after reinstalling version 156 following version 157, but the cited sources do not verify the correct downgrade procedure or its risks against version-specific official guidance. Mozilla’s release-notes index links to notes for individual versions; it does not establish Nova’s rollout history or an endorsed rollback path.
