Telling AI to design something can feel hard because you may know what you want to see without knowing how to describe it. Start by explaining what the design needs to accomplish, who it is for, and what it should contain. Then add the visual details that matter, review the first draft, and ask for focused changes.
Start with the job the design needs to do
“Make it look good” leaves the tool to guess what good means for your situation. A stronger brief names the audience and purpose first: a poster that helps local families find a weekend event has a different job from a poster meant to build excitement among existing customers.
OpenAI Academy recommends describing an image’s purpose, subject, action, setting, and style. Adobe likewise recommends direct, descriptive language. These are useful ingredients, not mandatory fields: include the details that help the tool understand your intended result.

Use the scaffold as a starting point, not a special syntax every tool requires. OpenAI Academy says a good image prompt need not be long and that one to three clear sentences are enough in most cases. Add specifics when framing, lighting, layout, texture, or materials are important to the result.
What to put in each field
- Deliverable and audience: Name the thing you need—such as a social post, event poster, or logo—and who will use or see it.
- Purpose: Describe the outcome the design should support, such as informing people about an event or making a service easier to recognize.
- Subject and content: Say what should appear and what should be happening. List required labels or other content explicitly.
- Visual direction: Describe style, mood, color, composition, lighting, or typography when those choices affect the brief. Prefer concrete direction, such as “quiet, spacious layout with dark green accents,” over a string of vague praise words.
- Format and constraints: Specify the intended placement or aspect ratio and any important limits, such as keeping a clear area for a headline or avoiding decorative elements that compete with the main subject.
Turn a vague idea into a usable brief

More specific version
Design a social-media poster for families in the neighborhood to promote a Saturday park cleanup. Show volunteers collecting litter in a leafy city park, with a welcoming, practical feel. Use a clean layout, green and warm yellow accents, and leave a clear space for the event title and time. Format it as a square post; avoid a cluttered background.

The second brief clarifies the audience, purpose, subject, setting, mood, layout, color direction, format, and a constraint. If the exact event title and time must appear in the image, add the exact text to the prompt and check that it is reproduced correctly.

Refine the first draft with one focused change
Treat the first result as a draft to evaluate against your brief, not as proof that a prompt guarantees a finished design. Identify the most important mismatch, then request a targeted edit or a variation. Adobe’s Firefly guidance says to reword a prompt when the result misses the goal; OpenAI Academy also describes making adjustments and exploring variations.
- Compare the draft with the brief. Check whether the subject, purpose, audience, format, and required content are represented.
- Choose the biggest mismatch. For example, the layout may be too busy, the subject may be too small, or the mood may feel too formal.
- Ask for a specific adjustment. Say what to change and, where useful, what to preserve: “Make the headline area larger while keeping the volunteers and park setting.”
- Review the revision against the same requirements. If it still misses, reword the relevant instruction or ask for a different variation rather than adding unrelated detail.
Focused edits make it easier to judge whether the change helped. Rewriting the entire brief for every mismatch can make it less clear which direction matters most.

Give constrained designs a checklist
When a design has exact content or functional requirements—a logo, labeled graphic, or layout with required information—write the prompt as a design brief. OpenAI’s image prompting guidance recommends including the audience, objective, format, required labels, and constraints for reusable logo design. After generation, check the output against each requirement rather than assuming the tool followed every instruction.

- Is the intended audience clear from the design?
- Does the result serve the stated objective?
- Are all required labels and other text present and correct?
- Does the layout fit the intended format and placement?
- Does it respect the stated constraints?
Exact text and dense layouts deserve particular scrutiny. OpenAI Academy recommends emphasizing sharp text rendering for designs with heavy in-image text and polishing them in a design tool if needed. A prompt can state requirements, but the available vendor guidance does not establish that every tool will reproduce exact text or layout perfectly.

Adapt the brief to the tool you are using
The underlying method—state the goal, describe the intended result, then inspect and refine it—travels across products. The interface and available controls do not. For example, Canva’s help describes selecting an element and invoking Canva AI to edit it, while OpenAI and Adobe document their own prompting workflows. Use the controls available in your chosen tool for the task at hand; do not assume that a workflow or capability documented for one product applies to another.
For text-heavy, precisely arranged, or reusable designs, include the requirements in the brief and leave time to check or polish the output in an editor. The useful prompt is the one that gives the tool enough direction to produce a draft you can evaluate—not one that promises a flawless result on the first try.
