To breed cats in Minecraft, tame two adult cats, make sure they are not both sitting, then feed each one raw cod or raw salmon. When both enter love mode, they produce a kitten. The parents need five minutes before they can breed again.
What you need to breed cats
- Two adult cats that you have tamed.
- Two pieces of raw cod or raw salmon—one for each cat.
- At least one cat standing rather than sitting.
Raw cod and raw salmon work interchangeably for taming and breeding. Minecraft’s official cat guide says stray cats can be tamed with either fish; the Minecraft Wiki’s cat entry documents the breeding requirements and cooldown.
How to breed cats, step by step
- Find two adult stray cats. Look in well-populated villages or around swamp huts, the locations identified in Minecraft’s official cat guide.
- Tame both cats. Hold raw cod or raw salmon and approach slowly. Sneak as you approach so a stray is less likely to flee; feed it when you are close enough. A collar indicates that the cat is tamed. Repeat with the second cat. The Minecraft Wiki’s husbandry tutorial advises sneaking when approaching strays.
- Make sure they can move. If both cats are sitting, get at least one standing before you try to breed them.
- Feed each cat one fish. Use one raw cod or one raw salmon on each tamed adult. Hearts or love-mode particles indicate they are ready; when both are in love mode, they produce one kitten.
If breeding does not work
- No hearts or kitten: Check that both cats are tamed adults and that you fed each one raw cod or raw salmon.
- Both cats are sitting: Make at least one stand; two sitting cats cannot breed.
- The cats bred recently: Wait five minutes after breeding before trying again.
- A stray keeps running away: Hold raw fish, sneak, and approach slowly rather than rushing toward it.
How long kittens take to grow
A kitten takes 20 minutes to mature. You can shorten the remaining growth time by feeding it raw cod or raw salmon: each fish reduces the remaining time by 10%, according to the Minecraft Wiki.
Does the method differ by edition?
The general breeding method is to use two tamed cats and raw fish. Minecraft’s January 7, 2026 article about new baby-mob features described some kitten-related changes as still in Java snapshot and Bedrock beta/preview testing. It also mentioned using a cat spawn egg on an adult cat to spawn a kitten in Bedrock, but those were development features and should not be treated as a universal released-game breeding method.
