To improve Wi-Fi, first measure speed near the router and in the problem area, then work out whether the cause is weak coverage, a busy wireless channel, one slow device, or the internet connection itself. Make one change at a time and repeat the tests. Start with free adjustments—especially router placement—before considering an extender or new equipment.

1. Measure the problem before changing anything

A single speed test cannot tell you whether the whole network is slow or only one room or device is affected. Microsoft recommends testing in several places, recording the results, making a change, and testing again. Its guidance is to establish a baseline before adjusting the network: Microsoft Support’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance.

  1. Run a speed test in the place where Wi-Fi is troublesome.
  2. Run another near the router or access point, using the same device if possible.
  3. Record the device, location, time, result, and whether other people or devices are using the network.
  4. Make one change, then repeat the tests under similar conditions.

Compare the pattern, not just the headline speed. A much better result near the router points toward a coverage or interference problem. Similar results everywhere may instead point to the internet service, router, or wider network. If the result changes substantially between runs, household activity or changing wireless conditions may be affecting the test.

2. Identify what kind of problem you have

Slow in one room, but better near the router

This pattern is consistent with weak coverage or obstacles between the router and device. Distance, walls, furniture, and other obstructions can weaken a wireless signal. Check placement before changing technical settings.

Slow on one device, while another works in the same place

Test a second device in the same location. If it performs better, focus on the affected device: check whether it has a weaker signal, whether background apps are using bandwidth, and whether its wireless adapter, driver, or power settings could be contributing. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance covers comparisons with another device, background activity, and power settings for dropped connections.

Slow or unreliable across several devices and locations

When multiple devices have the same symptom, a single client is less likely to explain it. Look at router placement, channel congestion, and whether the internet connection itself is slow. If Wi-Fi appears healthy but online activities still lag, do not assume that a wireless setting will fix an upstream service or network problem.

“Connected to Wi-Fi, but no Internet connection”

A device can be connected to the local wireless network even when the internet connection is unavailable. Check whether other devices can reach online services. If none can, investigate the router’s internet connection or service status rather than treating this only as a weak Wi-Fi signal.

3. Improve coverage with placement first

Where feasible, move the router or access point toward the middle of the home or the area it needs to serve, and place it higher and in the open. A unit tucked into a corner or under a desk may be blocked by walls, furniture, or other obstacles. Microsoft’s home-layout guidance and wireless-network tips recommend reducing obstructions and choosing a more central, elevated position.

  • Keep the router out of enclosed spaces where possible.
  • Reduce the number of walls and substantial obstructions between it and the affected device.
  • After moving it, repeat the tests at the original problem location and near the router.

Placement is a low-cost first step, not a guaranteed cure: the result depends on the layout, materials, and sources of interference in the home.

4. Pick the Wi-Fi band that fits the device’s location

Wi-Fi bands make different trade-offs between reach, throughput, and compatibility. The best choice depends on how far the device is from the access point and what both the router and device support.

Band When it may fit Trade-off
2.4 GHz Devices farther away or separated by obstacles; useful where reach and compatibility matter. Generally lower throughput and fewer non-overlapping channels than 5 GHz.
5 GHz A device closer to the access point that needs higher throughput. Generally less range and poorer wall penetration than 2.4 GHz.
6 GHz A nearby device when both it and the router support Wi-Fi 6E. High-performance, short-range option; compatibility and distance matter.

These band characteristics follow Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance. A band change is worth testing when the router offers a choice and the client supports it; it is not automatically an improvement in every room.

5. Check for channel congestion before changing channels

Nearby wireless networks can compete for airtime. If congestion seems likely, use a Wi-Fi analyzer app to inspect nearby networks and signal conditions before changing the router’s channel. Microsoft’s guidance recommends channels 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4 GHz, and a 5 GHz channel with fewer access points. These are selection guidelines, not a universal channel prescription: the least congested option depends on the networks around you and the router’s available settings. See Microsoft’s channel-selection advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Many routers select a channel automatically. That may work well, but results vary by router. If you change the setting manually, note the original choice, change only the channel, and run the same tests again so you can revert if performance worsens.

6. Decide whether an extender or other hardware is warranted

Consider additional coverage hardware only if testing still shows a coverage gap after reasonable placement changes, or relocation is not possible. Microsoft suggests an extender in that situation, while also cautioning that repeaters can be difficult to configure and may reduce performance. An extender is therefore a conditional coverage solution, not a guaranteed speed upgrade. Compare results in the affected area before and after setup.

If you are comparing coverage options, consider the actual bottleneck rather than headline speed alone:

  • Whether the device can be placed where it will reach the weak area.
  • Whether it is compatible with the router and clients, including their supported bands.
  • How much signal must pass through walls or other obstacles.
  • Whether relocating the existing access point or using a wired connection is possible.
  • Setup complexity and measured performance in the room that needs help.

The cited guidance does not establish a best router, mesh system, extender model, or paid analyzer. Choose hardware only after identifying the problem it is meant to solve.

7. Separate Wi-Fi throughput from internet performance

A wireless connection and an internet connection are different parts of the path. If several devices connect reliably and local Wi-Fi performance seems adequate but internet activities remain slow, the cause may be beyond the wireless link. Comparing devices and test results can help identify whether the symptom is isolated to one client or affects the household.

For managed or enterprise networks, Cisco describes dedicated throughput testing as a way to distinguish Wi-Fi performance from issues involving the internet, routing, or firewalls. Its methodology treats maximum throughput as a controlled scenario with one client and one access point, without competing users on the channel; that condition is not a prediction of normal household speed. See Cisco’s Validate Wi-Fi Throughput Testing and Monitoring Guide, updated July 8, 2026. This is an enterprise diagnostic principle, not a required tool for home troubleshooting.

When Wi-Fi keeps dropping

First compare the affected device with another device in the same location. If only one drops, investigate its adapter, driver, background activity, and power settings. If several devices lose connection, return to the shared network: check placement and obstructions, then test whether a channel or band change affects the result. Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting page includes power settings among the checks for frequent disconnections.
