To send a photo that stays blurred until it is revealed, add it to an iMessage, touch and hold Send, choose Invisible Ink, then send it. The recipient swipes over the message to reveal the photo. This is a reveal effect—not a timer, one-time-view control, or feature that automatically deletes the photo.

Does the photo disappear after it is viewed?
No. Invisible Ink hides the photo visually until the recipient reveals it; Apple’s instructions do not describe a viewing timer, one-time access, or automatic photo deletion for this effect. It should not be treated as a way to remove a photo from the recipient’s device.

What if Invisible Ink or the effect is missing?
Message effects require iMessage. Check that the conversation is using iMessage and that the devices support message effects. Apple notes that recipients using unsupported operating systems may see messages in plain text rather than with the intended formatting and effects. Its message-effects guidance and iPhone User Guide cover the feature and compatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is this the same as an expiring audio message?
No. Apple documents a separate expiration behavior for audio messages: a recording may be removed from the conversation on the sender’s iPhone two minutes after it is sent or listened to, unless it is kept. That audio-message setting does not make photos sent with Invisible Ink expire. See Apple’s instructions for sending audio messages.
