Bind each placeholder separately: pass the date as a string formatted for the target MySQL column, and bind the numeric value as a string too. PDO’s bindParam() and bindValue() signatures default to PDO::PARAM_STR; they do not expose a date-specific or float-specific parameter type.
Bind the date and amount as separate parameters
For example, assuming the chosen date representation suits the column and application, a statement can bind both values explicitly as strings:
$date = '2026-10-05';
$amount = 12.75;
$stmt = $pdo->prepare(
'INSERT INTO records (record_date, amount) VALUES (:date, :amount)'

$stmt->bindValue(':date', $date, PDO::PARAM_STR);

$stmt->execute();The placeholders stand for data values, not SQL identifiers, keywords, or arbitrary SQL fragments. Use fixed SQL text for table and column names, and bind the values that belong in those positions. PHP’s PDO::prepare() documentation describes this limitation.
Choose between bindParam() and bindValue()

As the PHP manual puts it, “Unlike PDOStatement::bindValue(), the variable is bound as a reference and will only be evaluated at the time that PDOStatement::execute() is called.” Both methods default the optional type argument to PDO::PARAM_STR. With bindParam(), pass a variable rather than an expression, because the method binds by reference:
$date = '2026-10-05';
$stmt = $pdo->prepare('SELECT id FROM records WHERE record_date = :date');
$stmt->bindParam(':date', $date, PDO::PARAM_STR);
$stmt->execute();Use a date string and do not assume PDO has a float type
The cited PDO binding methods do not define a date-specific parameter type. Supply a string in a representation appropriate for the actual MySQL temporal column and your application’s requirements. The sources cited here do not establish one format that is right for every date or date-time use case.

Likewise, do not use PDO::PARAM_FLOAT based on the float-type proposal. The PHP RFC dated 2017-04-05 is marked withdrawn; it records a proposal, not an implemented API, and says the recommendation at that time was to use PDO::PARAM_STR. The withdrawn RFC is historical context. For guidance tied to a particular PHP release, verify the constants available in that release and on the deployed runtime.
Check prepare mode when a specific failure persists
PDO_MYSQL uses emulated prepares by default, according to its driver manual. Prepare mode is worth recording when investigating a driver-specific issue, but the documented default alone does not establish that switching modes will fix a failure.

If the statement still behaves unexpectedly, capture the details needed to distinguish a binding problem from a schema, conversion, or driver issue:
- PHP and MySQL versions
- The SQL statement and relevant column definitions
- The date and numeric input values
- The value of
PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES - The complete exception message and the actual output or result
A minimal reproducible example with those details is necessary to identify the cause of a particular failure; the general binding rules do not determine it by themselves.
