Benchmark candidate database indexes against representative queries and data from the workload they are meant to serve. Refresh planner statistics, record a baseline, then compare query plans and observed execution behavior—with the same query, data, database version, and environment. A plan that mentions an index is not, by itself, evidence that the index improves the workload overall.
What a useful index benchmark should answer
An index is useful only in relation to queries that use it and the costs of keeping it. Start with the real workload: identify the query patterns that prompted the change, including relevant filters, sort orders, and selected columns. PostgreSQL’s guidance likewise recommends checking index usage in the real-life query workload and notes that experimentation is often necessary (PostgreSQL 17: Examining Index Usage).
Choose success criteria before comparing candidates. Depending on the investigation, these may include a change in the selected plan, actual execution behavior, or whether the query’s filtering, sorting, or retrieval work improves. Include index footprint and optimizer overhead when deciding whether to retain extra indexes; MySQL documents that unnecessary indexes consume space and add work for the optimizer (MySQL: Optimization and Indexes).
Run a repeatable comparison
- Select representative queries and data. Use query shapes and data distributions relevant to the intended workload, rather than assuming a column deserves an index in isolation.
- Capture the baseline. Record the current plan and execution behavior for each query before changing indexes. Note the database product and release, query, data state, and environment so comparisons remain interpretable.
- Refresh planner statistics. Run the engine’s statistics collection where appropriate before interpreting plans. PostgreSQL recommends
ANALYZE; SQLite explains thatANALYZEsupplies the planner with information about available indexes. - Test one candidate at a time where practical. Compare its plan and observed behavior with the baseline. Check whether the index supports the relevant filter, ordering, or selected-column pattern; do not assume that adding indexed columns always makes a query faster.
- Assess the tradeoff. Consider whether observed query benefits justify the extra index and its storage and optimizer costs. In MySQL 8.0, invisible indexes can help test the effect of removing an index without dropping it; confirm that the deployed release supports the feature and its syntax before using it.
- Decide for the tested workload. Keep an index when the measured behavior and operational tradeoffs support it for the workload under consideration. Do not generalize from one query, one plan, or one run to other workloads or environments.
The documentation does not prescribe a universal workload mix or benchmark duration. Choose a comparison suited to the queries and deployment you care about, and keep its conditions consistent rather than treating a single observation as a general performance guarantee.

Separate the chosen plan from execution measurements
A query plan describes the strategy selected by the optimizer; it is not the same thing as observed execution. PostgreSQL’s EXPLAIN displays the planned strategy, while EXPLAIN ANALYZE executes the statement and reports actual measurements. Compare estimates with those measurements rather than treating estimated costs or row counts as guarantees (PostgreSQL 17: Using EXPLAIN).
Interpret plan changes in context. PostgreSQL notes that estimates can be affected by random sampling during ANALYZE, and cost assumptions depend in part on the platform. If an index appears in the plan, determine whether the relevant query’s measured behavior improves; the plan alone does not establish an overall win.

SQLite provides EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN for a high-level account of how a query is executed, including index use. SQLite warns that its output format is intended for interactive debugging and may change between releases, so avoid relying on its text format as a stable, version-independent interface (SQLite: EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN).
Compare only index differences that matter to the query
Candidate indexes may affect searching, sorting, or retrieval differently. SQLite’s query-planning guide describes multi-column and covering indexes and how indexes interact with searching and sorting (SQLite: Query Planning). Use those distinctions to frame the comparison: does a candidate support the query pattern being tested, and does observed execution behavior justify its cost?

More indexed columns are not automatically better. PostgreSQL explains that combining indexes can require visiting multiple indexes and may not outperform using one index while applying another condition as a filter (PostgreSQL 17: Using EXPLAIN). The relevant result is the behavior of the complete query under the tested conditions, not the number of indexes consulted.

PostgreSQL recommends examining real-life query workload, running ANALYZE, and inspecting individual queries with EXPLAIN. Its guidance also points to server statistics for broader index usage. There is no general procedure that identifies the right indexes for every workload; experimentation is often necessary (Examining Index Usage).

SQLite
Use EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN to inspect the strategy and index use for a query, and consult ANALYZE statistics when interpreting planner decisions. The plan output’s format can change between releases, so treat it as an interactive diagnostic rather than a durable output contract (EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN; Query Planning).
MySQL 8.0
For an index-removal experiment, MySQL 8.0’s invisible-index feature lets you test the effect of removing an index without making a destructive change that must be undone. Check the documentation and syntax for the exact deployed release before relying on this method (MySQL 8.0: Invisible Indexes). MySQL’s optimization guidance also makes index overhead part of the decision: unnecessary indexes waste storage and add optimizer work (MySQL: Optimization and Indexes).

What to record for each candidate
- Workload: the representative query and data conditions being evaluated.
- Plan: which access strategy or index the optimizer selects, and whether filtering, sorting, or retrieval changes.
- Execution: actual behavior reported by the engine’s appropriate tool, kept distinct from planner estimates.
- Statistics and environment: whether planner statistics were refreshed, plus the engine release and comparison conditions.
- Operational cost: whether the added index’s footprint and optimizer overhead are justified for the tested workload.
- Test reversibility: where applicable, whether an engine feature such as MySQL 8.0 invisible indexes can safely test the effect of removing an existing index.
