For the most manageable Vendrick fight, carry at least four Souls of a Giant (five gives the fullest cited defense reduction), stay close to his left rear or left foot, and attack only after he commits to a move. Bring an upgraded weapon you can use safely and consider Repair Powder for a long fight. No particular weapon or armor set is established as universally best.

Prepare before you trigger the fight

Vendrick is an optional boss encountered after Velstadt. You can take the King’s Ring and leave him alone rather than start the encounter. GameSpot’s walkthrough says attacking Vendrick for a while precedes the health bar appearing and the fight beginning properly; see GameSpot’s Dark Souls 2 Walkthrough Guide: Part 20.

Carry Souls of a Giant

The number of Souls of a Giant in your inventory is the key preparation factor. The Dark Souls II Wiki says each soul halves Vendrick’s defense, with the effect capped at five; a player-written guide also stresses that the souls must be in inventory, not storage (Dark Souls II Wiki; quacksouls/ds2-sl1 guide).

Four is a practical target; five provides the fullest cited reduction. Andrew Mills’s Gamer Guides walkthrough recommends at least four and says that even with four, the weapon still does half damage. Treat those as the guide’s description of the mechanic, not a guarantee of exact damage for every character build (Gamer Guides: King Vendrick Strategies).

Souls carried What the cited guides report Practical trade-off
Four Gamer Guides recommends at least four and says the weapon still does half damage. A strong preparation threshold without pursuing the fifth soul.
Five The Wiki says the defense-reduction effect caps at five; Gamer Guides describes five as returning Vendrick’s defense to normal. Requires the extra route, but gives the fullest cited reduction.

GameSpot describes four souls from the Memories and a fifth in Black Gulch, reached through a cave with two Elite Giants. Gamer Guides lists the three Memories, the Black Gulch giants, and the optional Ancient Dragon among the five sources. The guides differ in route detail, and neither establishes that collecting the fifth is required to win.

Choose a dependable weapon and preserve durability

No cited guide establishes one best weapon or damage type for every build. Use an upgraded weapon whose reach and attack timing you know, and avoid long attack strings that leave too little stamina to dodge. Because the encounter can take a while, Gamer Guides suggests carrying Repair Powder in case the weapon’s durability runs low; it is an optional in-game contingency, not a requirement.

Keep armor and shields secondary

The sources do not identify a best armor set. Choose armor that lets you evade reliably rather than assuming heavier protection will make Vendrick’s attacks safe. Gamer Guides notes that a large greatshield may prevent a one-hit death, but blocking can consume enough stamina to leave no dodge for a follow-up. A shield is therefore a trade-off, not a universally safer strategy.

Where to stand and when to attack

Stay at his left rear or left foot

GameSpot and Gamer Guides both recommend staying close to Vendrick’s left side, especially near his left rear or foot. If a hit or movement pushes you toward a corner, Gamer Guides advises working back toward that position rather than continuing to fight from an awkward angle.

React to his attacks instead of opening with a combo

GameSpot characterizes the fight as reactionary: wait for Vendrick to attack, evade, then punish the recovery. His broad horizontal swings are especially dangerous because of their reach. Starting an attack while he is still free to turn can invite a frontal blow, so take a short opening and reset your position rather than getting greedy.

  1. Move close to his left rear or foot and keep enough room to roll.
  2. Watch for his attack; evade it rather than trying to trade hits.
  3. Use the recovery window for a safe attack or brief combo.
  4. Return to his left side and recover stamina before the next move.

Adjust the plan to your preparation

  • With four souls: expect a tougher, potentially longer fight than with five; prioritize clean evades and attack only in recovery.
  • With five souls: you have the fullest defense reduction cited by the sources, but still need to respect his reach and timing.
  • If using a greatshield: block only when the stamina cost will not prevent your next evade.
  • If your weapon is wearing down: use Repair Powder as needed rather than risking the final stretch with nearly depleted durability.
