None can guarantee discovery of every image: pages may create image URLs with JavaScript, and sites may serve thumbnails or different image variants. Choose a narrow scope, check the results, and confirm reuse rights before publishing or sharing files.
Choose a method based on the scope

For a selected set of pictures from a single page, start with the extension approach. For several related pages, use a tightly scoped Wget crawl. Choose HTTrack if the goal is an offline mirror rather than simply collecting a few image files. These are documented capabilities, not guarantees that a particular site or page will work.
Download images from one page with a browser extension
- Choose an extension carefully. Review its store listing, publisher information, requested permissions, and current availability in your browser. The Imageye Chrome Web Store listing describes scanning a page, filtering images by size and URL, selecting images, and downloading them in bulk. Those listing details do not establish compatibility with every site.
- Open the page containing the images. If images appear only after scrolling or interacting with the page, load that content first. A page may display responsive variants or thumbnails rather than the original files.
- Run the extension’s page scan. Use its filters to narrow the results, then select the files you want. The exact controls depend on the extension and its current version.
- Start the batch download and inspect the files. Check that the saved files open and that their dimensions and formats meet your needs. Do not assume that a detected thumbnail is the highest-resolution source.
If the extension finds no images or produces unexpected results, first check that it has the permissions it requests and that the page has finished loading its content. If an image is created dynamically by a script or requires an interaction, a simple page scan may not expose it.
Download from linked pages with GNU Wget
Wget can recursively retrieve resources referenced in HTML and CSS. Its manual describes breadth-first recursion and a depth limit; GNU’s overview says Wget respects robots.txt during recursive retrieval. Because option details can vary by installed version, use the Wget manual as the authority for your command and version.

Scope the crawl before starting
Begin at the narrowest page that contains links to the pages you need. Set recursion depth to match that scope rather than crawling from a site’s home page without limits. Wget is useful when image references are present in pages or stylesheets it can retrieve; it is not a guarantee that every image displayed by a modern site will be found.
For example, a basic recursive retrieval command can be written as:
wget --recursive --level=2 https://example.com/gallery/Replace the example URL with a page you are permitted to retrieve. This illustrates recursion and a depth setting; it is not a complete universal image-only filter. Check the installed Wget manual for options that fit your version and use case before adding file-type restrictions. A filter that is too narrow can exclude images referenced in CSS or with extensions you did not anticipate.
Keep downloads focused
- Start at a relevant category or gallery rather than the domain root.
- Use a depth appropriate to the number of link levels you want to follow.
- Review the manual’s recursion and file-selection options for the installed version.
- Check the output directory for unrelated files, duplicate variants, and files that did not download successfully.
Wget follows references it can discover. If an image URL appears only after client-side JavaScript runs, or a page requires a browser interaction before revealing it, recursive HTML/CSS retrieval may not see it. Do not repeatedly increase crawl depth as a substitute for understanding the site’s structure; that can fetch more pages than intended.

Make a local website mirror with HTTrack
HTTrack is intended to copy websites and linked files into a local directory, and it offers command-line and graphical interfaces. It is a reasonable fit when you want an offline copy of a portion of a site rather than a hand-picked image set. See the HTTrack documentation for its available configuration and filtering controls.
- Set the project and starting URL. Choose the part of the site you need rather than assuming a full-domain mirror is necessary.
- Configure scope and filters. Limit which pages and files the mirror should retrieve. Review the tool’s documentation for the controls available in your version.
- Run the mirror and inspect its output. Look through the local directory for the images you expected and verify that the files open at suitable dimensions.
HTTrack does not execute JavaScript. If an image URL is assembled or loaded only by a script running in the page, HTTrack may not discover it. A browser-based approach or another site-specific workflow may be more suitable for that content.
Check image completeness, quality, and file types
After any batch download, review the output rather than treating the tool’s completion message as proof that the set is complete. Discovery depends on what the page exposes and what the tool can parse.
- Confirm coverage: compare the downloaded set with the images you intended to collect.
- Open representative files: make sure files are valid rather than empty, incomplete, or saved in an unexpected format.
- Check dimensions: a site may expose a thumbnail or responsive variant where you expected a larger image.
- Look for duplicates: one visual image can be served through multiple URLs or sizes.
- Account for dynamic content: images loaded after scripts, scrolling, or interaction may not appear to a crawler that only parses HTML and CSS.
These checks follow from the documented discovery limits of the tools; they do not establish that any method will retrieve all images from a particular site.

Respect site rules and image reuse rights
Downloading a file does not grant permission to republish, distribute, or use it commercially. Check the image’s license and the site’s terms for your intended use. Imageye’s listing specifically advises checking license and reuse terms before reusing an image. Rules vary by image, jurisdiction, and purpose, so this guide cannot determine whether a particular use is lawful.
USAGov’s guidance is specific to federal government materials: it explains that images and logos on federal websites may still be subject to copyright or other restrictions. Do not generalize that guidance into a rule for every image or every country; consult USAGov’s guidance on government works for its scope.

Troubleshooting common problems
The extension finds no images
Check that the extension is installed from a listing you trust and has the permissions it requests. Load the page fully and try the scan again. Images revealed only by scripts, scrolling, or interaction may not be visible to a scanner; inspect the page workflow before concluding the site has no downloadable assets.
Wget downloads too many pages or files
Use a narrower starting URL and reduce the recursion depth. Review the installed version’s manual for recursion and file-selection options. Avoid broadening the crawl before checking which links are being followed.
Wget misses images that are visible in a browser
Wget’s documented retrieval follows references in HTML and CSS. If a URL is assembled at runtime by JavaScript or appears only after interaction, it may not be discoverable by that process. Consider a browser-based workflow for those pages.
HTTrack’s mirror lacks dynamic images
HTTrack does not run JavaScript, so script-generated image URLs can be missed. Use a browser method or a site-specific approach when the assets appear only after page scripts execute.

Downloaded files are small, duplicated, or unusable
Inspect image dimensions and formats, open sample files, and compare the results with the intended set. The site may offer thumbnails or multiple variants, and a discovered URL does not guarantee the returned file is the desired resolution.
