PDFShift does not turn a list of URLs into one ready-made batch job in the documented examples. To convert many pages, send one PDF conversion request per URL. You can do that sequentially and save each response, or submit conversions in parallel and receive each result through a webhook. PDFShift documents a default limit of 50 parallel conversions across plans.

Choose a batch method

Use a sequential loop when simplicity matters and your application can wait for each conversion. Use parallel requests when you need more throughput and can expose a webhook endpoint to receive separate completion callbacks. PDFShift says parallel requests are queued independently, return HTTP 202 Accepted, and require a webhook to receive each result. Its documented default parallel limit is 50; contact PDFShift if you need more capacity. PDFShift FAQ

  • Sequential: submit a URL, save the returned PDF bytes, then move to the next URL. This is straightforward to implement and troubleshoot.
  • Parallel: submit several conversions with a configured webhook, then associate each callback with the source URL and intended filename in your own application.

The examples below use PDFShift’s v3 endpoint, https://api.pdfshift.io/v3/convert/pdf, JSON request bodies, and an X-API-Key header. PDFShift Python guide

Prepare the URL list and API key

Validate inputs before sending requests

Keep the URLs in a file, database, or job queue, one source URL per item. Reject malformed or unsupported entries before submitting them, and assign each input a stable identifier or output filename. That makes it easier to match a failed request or webhook callback to the correct page.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keep credentials server-side

Store the API key in your server’s secret manager or environment configuration. Do not put it in browser-side JavaScript or a public repository. PDFShift documents X-API-Key as the authentication header; its help article says unauthenticated requests may return a watermarked response. PDFShift dates the header change to May 6, 2025. Convert URLs sequentially with Python

This runnable example reads URLs from urls.txt, sends one request at a time, checks HTTP errors, and writes response bytes to individual PDF files. Install the dependency with python -m pip install requests. Each non-empty line in urls.txt should contain one website URL.

Set the key before running the script, for example with export PDFSHIFT_API_KEY='your-key' in a Unix-like shell. The script uses a client-side request timeout of 120 seconds; that does not change PDFShift’s own conversion timeout. Its FAQ states a default of 30 seconds on free plans and 100 seconds on paid plans, with a timed-out conversion returning HTTP 408. PDFShift FAQ

Run conversions in parallel with callbacks

Parallel conversion is asynchronous in PDFShift’s documented workflow. Configure a publicly reachable webhook URL in each request using the option and callback format described in PDFShift’s current API documentation. An accepted request returns HTTP 202; your application should treat that as queued, not as a completed PDF. The webhook receives a separate POST for each converted source. PDFShift FAQ

  1. Create a persistent job record for every input URL, including its identifier, source URL, desired filename, and status.
  2. Submit conversion requests with the webhook configuration required by PDFShift. Keep concurrency at or below the documented default of 50 unless PDFShift confirms a higher limit for your account.
  3. Return a successful HTTP response promptly from your webhook handler, validate the callback, and locate the matching job using the callback data available in the current API response format.
  4. Save or download the completed PDF into durable storage, mark the job complete, and record errors for jobs that do not succeed.
  5. Make callback processing idempotent so a repeated delivery does not create duplicate files or corrupt job state.

PDFShift’s documented limit and callback behavior are vendor statements; the job table, correlation, idempotency, and storage steps are workflow recommendations, not claims of built-in batch management. Check the current PDFShift API documentation for the exact webhook fields and request options before wiring your endpoint.

Account for file size, credits, and delivery

Item Documented detail Practical implication
Free plan PDFShift’s pricing page lists 50 monthly credits, a 15 MB maximum file size, and a 30-second timeout (pricing information accessed 2026-10-03). Pricing Check the live plan page before a production batch; plan terms can change.
Credit accounting PDFShift says one credit covers up to 5 MB of generated PDF data; output over that amount consumes additional credits. FAQ Pricing Estimate usage from generated output size, not only the number of URLs.
Conversion timeout PDFShift’s FAQ states defaults of 30 seconds for free plans and 100 seconds for paid plans; a timed-out conversion returns HTTP 408. FAQ Retry selectively, and investigate pages that repeatedly exceed the account’s limit.
Parallelism PDFShift states a default of 50 simultaneous parallel conversions on all plans; more capacity requires contacting the vendor. FAQ Limit your own worker concurrency; do not assume requests beyond that number run simultaneously.

If using PDFShift’s Make guide’s filename workflow, the guide says the resulting PDF URL is available for two days. Download the file to your own persistent storage rather than treating that temporary link as an archive. The guide also describes omitting filename to return PDF bytes directly. PDFShift Make guide

Alternative: capture a clean page with ScreenshotNeo

If your actual goal is a clean capture of each page rather than PDFShift’s HTML-to-PDF conversion workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API with PDF output as well as PNG, JPEG, and WebP. It is not a drop-in batch replacement for PDFShift’s webhook process; its documented bulk capture feature accepts up to 100 URLs per call. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture, and failed loads, blank pages, bot checks/CAPTCHAs, and cache hits are not billed. Each response reports the page verdict and billing state in headers. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents.

One-request example

This example requests a PDF for one URL; adapt the target URL or loop over your URL list for multiple requests. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and formats.

Troubleshoot failed or incomplete conversions

  • Watermark or unauthenticated output: verify that the request sends the API key as X-API-Key, not as a browser-exposed credential. Check PDFShift’s authentication instructions. Authentication help
  • HTTP 202 but no file: for parallel mode, 202 means accepted into the asynchronous workflow. Check webhook reachability, handler logs, and callback processing; do not treat the acceptance response as the PDF result.
  • HTTP 408: the conversion exceeded the applicable timeout. Verify the page loads reliably, consider whether the plan’s timeout is sufficient, and retry only when appropriate.
  • Oversized result or unexpected credit use: inspect the generated PDF’s size. PDFShift charges by 5 MB increments, and the free plan’s listed maximum file size is 15 MB; verify current limits on the pricing page. Pricing
  • Missing or overwritten files: use a unique name per input, preserve the source-to-file mapping, and write into durable storage. If working from temporary generated URLs in the Make filename flow, download within the documented two-day availability period. Make guide
  • Slow batch: sequential requests trade simplicity for elapsed time. Parallelize only with webhook handling in place and within the stated concurrency limit; the reviewed sources do not establish an independent conversion-speed benchmark.

Privacy and regulated documents

PDFShift’s developer site says its conversion technology is HIPAA compliant and that documents are not stored unless specifically requested. Those are vendor statements, not a determination that a particular workflow meets your legal or contractual requirements. For regulated data, verify applicable agreements, account configuration, access controls, retention, and your own legal obligations before sending documents. PDFShift developer site

Frequently Asked Questions

Does PDFShift provide a single batch endpoint for a list of URLs?

The documented workflow described here submits a conversion request for each URL; batch behavior is implemented by your application through iteration or parallel requests.

Can I rely on a generated PDF URL as permanent storage?

No. PDFShift’s Make guide says URLs returned through its filename workflow are available for two days; download the PDF to storage you control.
