In Halide, balance exposure by choosing a shutter speed for the motion you want to capture, then setting ISO as low as the available light allows. Halide’s product page lists shutter speed, ISO, and white balance as manual controls, but does not list an in-app aperture adjustment. The consulted sources therefore do not establish that you can change aperture in Halide.
How do I balance shutter speed and ISO in Halide?
Start with the visual priority, not a preset number. A faster shutter can help keep a moving subject sharp, while a lower ISO produces less noise when the scene has enough light. If preserving a fast shutter makes the image too dark, raise ISO only as much as needed and accept the added noise.
- Moving subject: Favor a faster shutter to reduce motion blur. Raise ISO if necessary to get a usable exposure.
- Still scene: A longer shutter time gathers more light, but movement by the phone or anything in the scene can blur the image.
- Low-noise priority: Keep ISO low when the available light and chosen shutter speed permit it.
These are qualitative tradeoffs, not universal numeric settings. The cited Halide sources do not specify recommended shutter speeds or ISO values for particular scenes.

What do shutter speed and ISO change?
Shutter speed: light and motion
Shutter speed determines how long the camera collects light. Halide’s official Fully Manual guide says, “Shutter speed is the number that will determine how much light your iPhone camera collects.” A longer exposure collects more light, but makes a sharp, responsive capture harder if the phone or subject moves. Halide’s guide identifies a higher shutter speed as useful for fast-moving subjects.

ISO: brightness and noise
ISO affects how the camera handles the exposure. A lower ISO reduces noise but requires more light. Halide’s guide explains: “The lower, the more light your camera will need to take a photo — but you will also see less noise.” Raising ISO can make a low-light shot usable when a faster shutter matters, at the cost of more visible noise.
How do I adjust the controls in Halide?
Halide offers automatic and manual modes. Its product page says manual mode provides control over shutter speed and ISO, along with white balance. The gesture instructions below come from Halide’s Fully Manual support article, updated October 31, 2020; gestures can change, so check the controls in your installed app version if they do not match.

- Swipe vertically to adjust shutter speed.
- Swipe horizontally to adjust ISO.
- Review the image and make small adjustments: prioritize shutter speed for motion, and lower ISO when light allows.
Can I change aperture in Halide?
The consulted Halide product description lists shutter speed, ISO, and white balance as manual controls; it does not list aperture. On that evidence, an in-app aperture adjustment is not established. This is a statement about the controls documented by Halide, not a claim about the physical aperture of every iPhone camera. The sources reviewed do not give model- and lens-specific aperture values.

Lower ISO when the scene has enough light to support the shutter speed you need. If lowering ISO forces a shutter speed that blurs your moving subject, decide whether the cleaner image or the sharper motion is more important; increasing ISO may be the better compromise. For still scenes, a longer exposure can gather more light at a lower ISO, but keep the phone steady and consider whether movement in the scene will blur.

A phone support or tripod may help keep the device steady during a longer exposure, but it is an optional accessory, not a Halide requirement, and cannot prevent motion within the scene.

Which setting should I prioritize?
