Start with your handheld’s balanced or quiet power profile when you’re playing unplugged or want less fan noise. Use a lower frame-rate cap—and, where appropriate, a lower refresh rate—before raising power. Increase performance only as much as a particular game needs, then compare changes in the same game and scene. Presets and battery observations are model- and test-specific; no single wattage or runtime applies to every gaming handheld.
What to adjust first
- Choose a power profile for the session. On battery, begin with the device maker’s balanced or efficiency profile; choose quiet when reducing fan noise matters most. For the original Lenovo Legion Go, Lenovo recommends 15 W Balance for battery use and 8 W Quiet to save power and minimize noise. The Legion Go S SteamOS has different presets: 15 W Balance and 10 W Quiet. Check your own model’s guide rather than copying another handheld’s wattages.
- Set a frame-rate cap before raising power. A game that runs acceptably at a lower target may not need a higher-power mode. On ROG Ally, ASUS’s limiter offers 30, 45, 60, 90, or Max. ASUS says a 30 FPS cap can save battery or make performance more consistent in some games. The limiter must be enabled before launching the game and works only in exclusive full-screen mode. ASUS ROG Ally Series FAQ
- Consider lowering refresh rate. If the game does not benefit from the display’s maximum refresh, a lower setting may be a reasonable efficiency trade-off. Lenovo describes 60 Hz as energy efficient and adequate for most situations on the original Legion Go. Display behavior and available settings differ by model.
- Raise power only if the game needs it. Move up one profile at a time until the game meets your performance needs. Watch for the trade-off: higher power can mean more heat to dissipate, faster fans, and greater battery use.
Lenovo’s original Legion Go guide puts the fan trade-off plainly: “The faster the fan spins, the more heat can be dissipated. However, a faster fan speed also leads to excessive power consumption and shortens its life cycle.” This is guidance in Lenovo’s model-specific user guide, not a measured comparison across handhelds. How the Lenovo power profiles differ
The following wattages are the profiles documented by Lenovo for these specific models. They are not universal handheld settings or guarantees of a particular runtime.
| Handheld | Profile settings in Lenovo’s guide | Lenovo’s stated use |
|---|---|---|
| Original Legion Go | 20 W Performance; 15 W Balance; 8 W Quiet; Custom from 5–30 W | Performance for plugged-in use when some fan noise is acceptable; Balance for battery use; Quiet to save power and minimize noise. |
| Legion Go S (SteamOS) | 30 W Performance; 15 W Balance; 10 W Quiet; Custom from 5–40 W | Performance for plugged-in use when some fan noise is acceptable; Balance for battery use; Quiet to save battery and reduce noise. |

Compare settings without confusing the results
Battery percentage and fan noise can vary with the game and the way you play it. To make a useful comparison, change one setting at a time and keep the rest of the conditions as close as possible:
- Use the same game and scene, resolution, graphics preset, brightness, and refresh rate.
- Start comparisons at a similar battery level and use the same length of play.
- Record the power profile and frame-rate cap, along with observed frame rate, perceived fan noise, and battery percentage at the end.
- Repeat a promising setting during a representative session; a short test in a quiet menu may not reflect demanding gameplay.
This is a practical comparison method, not a controlled benchmark. If you compare devices, note each model’s software version and power mode and match image quality as closely as possible. The cited sources do not provide a controlled cross-device noise or runtime test.

What battery-life figures can—and cannot—tell you
Power mode alone does not establish how long a handheld will run. Game workload, display brightness and settings, firmware, operating system, battery condition, and other factors also matter. The sources here do not quantify each factor’s separate effect, so treat a runtime from a particular review as an example under those conditions, not as a prediction for your device.

For context, Lenovo’s 2023 announcement lists a 49.2 Wh battery for the original Legion Go and claims fan noise of “less than 25dB” in Quiet Mode. The noise figure is Lenovo’s manufacturer claim, not an independent measurement or a basis for ranking handhelds. Lenovo Legion Go product announcement

In a separate example, Tom’s Guide reported a battery warning after about 1.5 hours on its Legion Go S SteamOS review unit while playing Doom: The Dark Ages at 1200p in 30 W Performance mode. The review also described loud fans in those circumstances. That observation belongs to one review unit, game, resolution, and power profile; it is not a standardized result for other games or handhelds. Tom’s Guide Legion Go S SteamOS review
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reduce the impact of fan noise
Use the quiet profile when lower noise matters more than peak performance, or reduce the game’s demands until you can use a lower power mode. A headset can make fan noise less noticeable, but it only masks perceived noise: it does not reduce the handheld’s fan speed, heat, or power draw. If a fan sounds unusual rather than simply loud under load, consult the device maker’s support guidance for that model.
