Before installing an Android beta on a Pixel, run a Google Account backup, verify its completion and coverage, and separately protect important data stored in individual apps or services. Also check the instructions for the exact beta and installation method: enrolling in an over-the-air beta and flashing a factory image can have very different reset requirements.
1. Run and verify your Pixel backup
- On your Pixel, open Settings and find Google services and Backup. Menu names can vary by Android version, so use the current labels shown on your phone.
- Review the backup details to see which data and apps are included. A device backup does not necessarily cover every item on the phone.
- Choose Back up now and wait. Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours, so tapping the button alone does not confirm that it has finished. Before you proceed, check the Backup screen for the latest backup date and confirm that the selected categories show as backed up. Google’s Android backup instructions explain the backup screen and process.
Make sure you know which Google Account is backing up the Pixel and can sign in to it. Google recommends protecting backed-up data with a screen lock such as a PIN, pattern or password. Google’s backup guidance covers these protections.
2. Check data that may be backed up separately
Do not assume that everything on the phone is included in the device backup. Photos, videos and contacts are synced through their respective services separately from Pixel device backup. Some third-party apps also require you to create a backup inside the app; Google specifically advises backing up WhatsApp chat history within WhatsApp. Pixel backup guidance and Google’s Pixel setup guidance describe these separate paths.
Before installing the beta, check anything irreplaceable that matters to you, including app-specific data, authenticator recovery options, downloads and files. Confirm the relevant app or service has its own usable backup or sync copy. Coverage and restore options vary by app and Android version, so do not treat the general phone backup as a guarantee that every app’s data can be recovered.

3. Check whether your beta installation will reset the phone
The reset risk depends on the release and how you install it. For Android 16 QPR beta enrollment, Google says most users do not need a full data reset to install the beta, while recommending a backup before enrolling. That statement applies to the Android 16 QPR enrollment instructions, not every beta. Read Google’s Android 16 QPR beta instructions for the applicable devices and current enrollment details.
Flashing a factory image is different. Google’s factory-image instructions warn that flashing from a production build to a beta—or returning from beta to production—requires a full device reset that removes all user data. Check the factory-image instructions for the release you intend to install before proceeding.

Beta availability, supported Pixel models and rollback steps change by release. Do not assume the instructions for one Android beta apply to another. Use the official page for your intended build and follow its directions for leaving the beta as well as installing it.

A backup is important, but it cannot guarantee that every beta-era item will restore after a downgrade. Google says restore behavior varies by phone and Android version, and a backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower version. Check Google’s Android backup and restore guidance before relying on a backup to move between versions.

For a detailed transfer or setup process, Google also provides instructions for transferring data to a Pixel. Follow the restore options available on your device and do not treat a backup as a promise that every app or newer-version data item will be recoverable after a downgrade.
