To back up selected Windows or Mac folders to a UGREEN NAS, use the NAS desktop client and UGOS Pro’s Sync & Backup app: open Back up & Restore > Add > Backup this computer, choose the computer folders and a NAS destination, then review and run the task. Keep the computer awake and the desktop client open while the backup runs. This creates a copy of chosen folders, not a complete system image.
Before you start
- Check that your exact UGREEN NAS model supports the current desktop client and feature. In UGREEN’s Download Center, select your model to find its applicable downloads and documentation; model support and interfaces can change.
- Install the listed Windows or macOS desktop client, then sign in to your NAS.
- Make sure the NAS destination has enough free space and that the account you will use has permission to write to it.
- Plan to keep the computer awake, connected to the network, and the desktop client open while the job runs. Sleep, shutdown, or closing the client interrupts work.
How to back up selected computer folders
- In the desktop client, open Sync & Backup. If it is not installed, install it from UGOS Pro’s App Center.
- Choose Back up & Restore > Add > Backup this computer.
- Select the folders you want to protect, such as Documents, Photos, tax records, or creative work. This is a selected-folder task; do not treat it as a full-disk or bare-metal recovery image.
- Choose or create a NAS destination folder. A dedicated folder for each computer helps keep backups identifiable; use a personal or shared folder the task account can write to.
- Choose the task policy. UGREEN documents real-time and manual policies. A manual task only runs when you start it, so it depends on you remembering to run it.
- Review the selected computer paths, NAS destination, filters, policy, and task name, then start the task. For the first run, leave the computer awake and client open until its status shows completion.
- Restore a few test files and open them to check that they work. UGREEN recommends validating restored files rather than assuming that a completed-looking task is enough.
Backup this computer or Sync this computer?
Choose backup when you want a one-way recovery copy of selected folders on the NAS. Choose sync when you want working folders kept aligned across the computer and NAS. The behaviors differ in ways that matter if you delete or overwrite a file:

UGREEN describes these behaviors in its guides to computer backup and computer sync. If recovering an earlier version of an overwritten file is important, do not assume this selected-folder backup task provides that history.
Mac alternative: use Time Machine for backup history
If you want Mac Time Machine history, rather than only a copy of selected folders, UGREEN documents setting up Time Machine over SMB. Its guide specifies UGOS Pro firmware 1.9.0.0035 or later and macOS Monterey 12 or later; confirm current compatibility and interface details for your devices before setup.

- In UGOS Pro, enable SMB and Bonjour.
- Designate a shared folder for Time Machine on the NAS.
- In macOS Time Machine settings, select the NAS destination and configure the backup.
UGREEN says Time Machine encryption encrypts the network backup before it is stored on the NAS. Keep the encryption password somewhere safe: if you lose it, the backup may be unrecoverable. See UGREEN’s Mac and Time Machine setup guide for its current steps.
How long will the first backup take?
UGREEN’s 2025 guide gives roughly 110 MB/s on 1GbE under favorable conditions as a practical estimate, not a guaranteed or independent benchmark. Wi-Fi, many small files, computer sleep, and other network activity can reduce throughput, so allow extra time for a large first run. UGREEN’s guide also covers backup timing and protecting the NAS copy.

Protect the NAS copy too
A backup stored on the NAS protects the computer copy, but it does not protect the NAS itself from loss or failure. Keep another copy on a separate medium or location, such as an external drive, cloud storage, or another NAS. UGREEN documents a NAS-to-external-drive backup; its packaged backup is restored through UGOS Pro, so do not assume it is an ordinary folder that can be opened on any computer.
