To avoid StaleElementReferenceException when opening a new tab or window, wait for the new window handle, switch WebDriver to it, wait for a condition specific to the new page, and then locate the element again. Do not reuse a WebElement found before navigation or in another browsing context: it belongs to the document where Selenium found it.
Why a WebElement becomes stale
A Selenium WebElement is a reference to a particular element in a particular document and browsing context. Selenium calls it stale when it no longer appears in the page’s DOM. The official exception reference lists several causes: the driver is no longer on the same page or the page refreshed; the element was removed and replaced, as can happen during a JavaScript framework render; or the element was inside an iframe whose context refreshed. Opening a page in a new tab does not make an element from the original tab usable in the new one. A window switch changes the active browsing context; it does not transfer element references. Find elements only after switching, using locators that Selenium can resolve against the new page.
Use this sequence for a new tab or window
- Save the original handle. Record
driver.current_window_handlebefore clicking the control that opens the other page. - Record the handles that already exist. If the test expects to start with one browser context, verify that assumption. Taking a set of handles also lets you identify the new one when more than one was already open.
- Trigger the new page. Click the link or control that opens it.
- Wait for the handle change. Use an expected condition such as
new_window_is_opened; do not assume the new page is ready just because the click returned. - Switch to the new handle. Find the handle that was not present in the earlier set and call
driver.switch_to.window(new_handle). - Wait for the expected page state. Wait for an expected title, URL, or page-specific element appropriate to the application.
- Find and use the element anew. Call
find_elementafter the switch and readiness wait. Do not carry a pre-click or original-tabWebElementinto the new page.
This Python example uses Selenium’s documented window-handle and explicit-wait pattern. Replace the link text, title fragment, selector, and timeout with values that fit the page under test; 10 seconds is an example, not a universal timeout.

Choose a wait for the transition you need
Explicit waits should observe the state that matters for the next action. The Selenium expected-conditions reference documents these conditions and their use: Python expected conditions.

Prefer the narrowest condition that represents the real transition. For example, waiting for a new handle only confirms that a browsing context opened; it does not confirm that the page inside it has rendered the element you want. Follow it with a page-specific readiness check. Fixed sleeps do not assert any browser state, can waste time when the page is fast, and may still be too short when it is slow.
Handle elements replaced during a page update
If a page refresh or framework update replaces a node, keep the old reference only if you need to wait for its removal. Then locate the replacement again from its locator. Selenium documents staleness_of(element) for this purpose.

)The final lookup is important: old_row cannot become a reference to the replacement row. If the application updates a page without removing the element, staleness is not the right readiness signal; wait for a meaningful changed value or other application-specific state instead.
Return safely to the original page
When work in the child tab is done, close the current tab and switch back to the saved original handle before continuing. Selenium warns that closing a tab without switching away leaves WebDriver pointed at a closed page and can lead to NoSuchWindowException. The window guide linked above covers this context change.

A retry can be appropriate when the application legitimately re-renders between a fresh lookup and a small, idempotent action. Put the lookup inside the retry so every attempt obtains a current element. Retrying an action on the same stale WebElement cannot repair that reference.

raiseUse a retry only when repeating the action is safe. A non-idempotent action—such as submitting a payment or creating a record—may have succeeded before the response became stale, so blind repetition can create duplicate effects. Prefer synchronizing on the real page transition and checking the outcome; do not use broad retries to conceal unrelated failures.
Troubleshoot the common failure patterns
- The click succeeds, then a lookup in the new page is stale. Check whether you switched to the new handle before locating the element. Wait for the expected title, URL, or page-specific element, then make a fresh lookup.
- The test waits forever for a new handle. Confirm that the control actually opens a separate tab or window rather than navigating the current one. Check that the click targeted the expected control and that the starting handle count matches the test's assumption. If navigation stays in the same tab, wait for the resulting URL or page state instead of a handle increase.
- There are multiple possible new handles. Compare the current handle set with the set captured before the action. If the application can open more than one context, do not arbitrarily select one; identify the intended destination by its title or URL after switching through the candidates.
- The old tab's element goes stale after a refresh. A refresh can replace the document or its nodes. Wait for the old element to become stale if that transition is useful, then locate the replacement using the original locator.
- An element inside an iframe goes stale. The iframe may have refreshed, or the driver may be in the wrong frame context. Switch into the appropriate frame after the page transition and locate the inner element again.
- The test raises
NoSuchWindowExceptionafter closing a tab. Switch to a handle that is still open—usually the saved original handle—before issuing more commands. - A retry does not fix the error. Ensure the locator is resolved again on every attempt. Reusing a stored stale object repeats the same failure; an unbounded retry can instead hide a broken wait or unexpected navigation.

Use an explicit wait for the specific state you need, such as a new handle followed by a page-specific condition. A sleep does not verify that state.
