To avoid unexpected roaming charges, check your carrier’s rules for every destination before you leave, then prevent your home SIM from using services you don’t intend to use. Turn off data roaming if you don’t want that line supplying mobile data; use airplane mode with Wi-Fi re-enabled if you want to stop cellular connections altogether. For travel eSIMs or local SIMs, confirm compatibility and select the correct data line. Calls, texts, Wi-Fi Calling, and ship or aircraft networks can have separate charges, so no single setting is a universal bill shield.
Check your carrier’s terms before you travel
Roaming costs depend on your carrier, plan, destination, and the service used. A plan may include roaming in some destinations but charge separately for data, calls, texts, voicemail, or Wi-Fi Calling. Check the carrier’s current destination-specific guidance rather than assuming your domestic plan applies abroad. Apple likewise recommends checking with your carrier because some plans include international roaming: Apple’s international travel guidance.
- Confirm whether your destination is included, and whether a daily pass or add-on is available.
- Check what triggers a pass or fee, how much data it includes, and what happens when that allowance is used.
- Look up separate rates or rules for calls, SMS, voicemail, and Wi-Fi Calling.
- Check how the carrier treats background data, including automatic app activity.
Carrier rules are carrier-specific. For example, Rogers says some calls or texts made through Wi-Fi Calling while abroad can trigger its Roam Like Home daily fee, and calls to a country other than the one being visited may incur long-distance charges. Verizon says Wi-Fi Calling to countries other than the United States is billed at international long-distance rates. These examples do not establish how another carrier will bill you.
Choose how you want to connect
Pick an approach based on your destination, trip length, data needs, whether you need your home number, and your phone’s capabilities. A travel eSIM, for example, may supply data while your home SIM remains installed, but you must configure the data line correctly to avoid using the home line for roaming data.

| Option | Potential benefit | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Home-carrier travel pass or add-on | May let you keep your usual number and carrier service under a defined package. | Destination inclusion, fee, activation trigger, data allowance, call and text terms, and what happens after the allowance is used. Terms vary by carrier, plan, and account. |
| Local or regional eSIM | Can provide destination data without using the home line’s roaming data. | Phone unlock status, eSIM and network compatibility, coverage, data amount, validity, hotspot rules, voice and SMS inclusion, and correct data-line selection. |
| Local prepaid physical SIM | Can provide local service on a compatible phone with a physical SIM slot. | Unlocked phone, SIM size and network compatibility, local registration rules, coverage, and plan validity. |
| Wi-Fi-only with cellular disabled | Stops cellular connections while the phone is in airplane mode, while allowing Wi-Fi if you switch it back on. | Normal cellular calls and SMS are unavailable in airplane mode. Public Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Calling availability and billing terms vary. |
| Portable Wi-Fi router or hotspot | Provides a separate data connection that may serve multiple devices. | Device or rental cost, local coverage, included data, battery life, and whether your phone’s home SIM can still roam. |
A router or hotspot provides a connection only through its own data service; owning or renting the device does not itself supply data or stop a home SIM from roaming. A local SIM or eSIM also does not automatically disable roaming on another line.
Turn off data roaming on the line you want to protect
On iPhone, the control is called Data Roaming. Apple defines it as cellular internet access on a network outside your provider’s coverage. For a single SIM or eSIM, Apple’s current instructions use Settings > Cellular (or Cellular Data) > Cellular Data Options, then turn off Data Roaming. On a dual-SIM iPhone, select the relevant line first, then open its cellular data options and turn off roaming for that line. See Apple’s instructions and international travel guidance; menu labels may vary by device, region, and software version.

Turning off data roaming addresses cellular data on that line; it does not guarantee that calls, SMS, voicemail, or Wi-Fi Calling are free. If you are using a travel SIM or eSIM, set that line as the cellular data line and follow the provider’s setup instructions. Check the device maker’s current instructions if you use a different phone.
Prevent background data and disable cellular service when needed
Apps can use mobile data without you opening them. Rogers identifies background app refresh, Wi-Fi Assist, cloud backups, and push email as possible sources of data use. To reduce unintended data use, consider turning off background refresh and automatic backups over cellular, and review any settings that allow the phone to switch to mobile data when Wi-Fi is weak. The exact controls depend on your device and apps.

If you want no cellular connection at all, turn on airplane mode. You can then turn Wi-Fi back on if you want internet access. While airplane mode remains enabled, normal cellular calls and SMS will not work. Check your carrier’s Wi-Fi Calling rules before using that feature over Wi-Fi; it can still be billed as roaming or international long-distance service.
Take extra care on ships and aircraft
Ships and aircraft may offer non-terrestrial mobile networks with charges that differ from ordinary land networks. EU consumer guidance specifically warns that ship and aircraft connections may cost extra and advises disabling roaming or using flight mode. The European Commission says users should receive information when connecting to a non-terrestrial network. See the EU consumer guidance on roaming costs and the European Commission’s roaming policy. If you have not confirmed the network and its charges with your provider, use flight mode and re-enable Wi-Fi only if desired.

Understand the EU “roam like at home” rule
When travelling between EU countries in covered circumstances, domestic prices generally apply under the EU’s “roam like at home” rules, subject to fair-use limits and plan conditions. The rule is not a blanket guarantee for every destination, plan, or network: check the EU consumer guidance and your carrier’s terms for your itinerary. In particular, do not assume the same treatment applies when a phone connects to a ship or aircraft network.
