Verify a project’s website through official channels you find independently, never enter your recovery phrase on a website, and read every wallet request before signing. Connecting a wallet is not the same as approving a token allowance—but an approval can let a contract move tokens later, even after you disconnect the site.

How do I know if a crypto presale website is real?

A convincing logo, familiar project name, or polished page is not proof. Fake presale sites can copy a legitimate project’s branding and use a URL that differs by a small detail. They may also advertise a token whose name resembles the real project’s token; a matching name alone does not establish that the token is genuine. MetaMask explains how token presale scams use these tactics.

  1. Find the project’s official website and social channels independently. Do not rely on a link in a message, search ad, post, or unexpected token or NFT.
  2. Compare the full domain, character by character, with the domain linked from the project’s independently located official channels. Look for substitutions, extra words, or different endings.
  3. Check that the presale and token contract details are confirmed by those official channels. Do not identify a token by its name alone.
  4. Before signing, check that the wallet request is consistent with the action you intended. If you cannot tell what it does, reject it.

Urgency, guaranteed returns, free money, or unusually high yields are reasons to stop and investigate, not reasons to skip verification. Wallet security alerts can be useful, but they may not detect every threat; a badge or warning is not a guarantee, and the absence of a badge does not by itself prove a site is malicious. MetaMask describes the limits of its security alerts.

Is this token claim link safe?

Treat unsolicited claim messages, social posts, and unexpected airdrops as untrusted until verified. A claim page may ask for your recovery phrase, request a transfer, or present a signature or approval as an ordinary step. Do not follow instructions embedded in unsolicited token or NFT details; find the project’s official channels independently and check whether the claim is announced there.

Can connecting my wallet drain it?

A wallet connection and a token approval are different actions. Connecting lets an app interact with your wallet interface; it does not, by itself, grant that app a token allowance. An approval is a separate permission that lets a specified contract move a particular token within the allowance you grant. Some scam pages disguise an approval as a claim, voucher, or presale purchase. MetaMask describes how misleading offers can prompt wallet approvals.

The important risk is what you sign. An unlimited allowance can expose the full balance of that token to the approved contract. Disconnecting the app later does not cancel that allowance.

What should I check in a wallet prompt?

Pause before signing and identify whether the prompt is a connection, transaction, token approval, or signature. For an approval, inspect the token, spender or contract, and amount or allowance wherever the wallet displays them. The request should match the action you intended; reject it if the details are unclear or unexpected.

  • Confirm the full site domain using a project URL reached independently.
  • Check which token and amount the request involves. Prefer the smallest allowance needed rather than an unlimited one.
  • Do not assume a wallet warning or verification badge makes the request safe.
  • Never provide a recovery phrase as part of a claim or support process.

If the wallet does not make the request understandable, do not sign just to see what happens. MetaMask’s approval guidance explains why it matters to review the access being requested.

How do I check and revoke token approvals?

Use an approval checker for the relevant network, then review the spender and allowance. Permissions are network-specific: checking one network does not reveal approvals on another. Revoke permissions you no longer need or that appear suspicious. Revoking is an on-chain transaction and requires a network fee; check the approval list again after the transaction to verify the result. Disconnecting a site alone does not revoke an allowance. Ethereum.org explains approval revocation and network fees.

What should I do after signing a suspicious transaction?

If you suspect a wallet is compromised, prioritize assets that remain under your control. If the recovery phrase may have been exposed, do not treat that wallet as safe merely because you revoked permissions: move remaining assets to a new secure wallet whose recovery phrase has not been exposed. Revoke malicious allowances where possible, but do not delay securing remaining assets if you believe someone can still access the wallet.

  2. Review and revoke suspicious allowances on each relevant network where possible.
  3. Secure related exchange accounts: change passwords and enable two-factor authentication.
  4. Keep transaction hashes, wallet addresses, screenshots, and messages, and use them when reporting the incident through relevant official channels.

Ethereum.org notes that once a transaction is confirmed on the blockchain, it is final in the ordinary blockchain process. Be wary of anyone who contacts you promising to recover funds in exchange for an upfront fee. Ethereum.org’s scam guidance covers reporting, transaction finality, and recovery-scam risks.

Would a hardware wallet prevent these scams?

A hardware wallet can keep private keys offline and sign transactions locally, but it does not make a malicious approval safe, prevent user error, or protect a recovery phrase after it has been disclosed. It is an optional security measure, not a substitute for verifying the site and understanding the transaction. Ledger explains hardware-wallet key storage and its limitations; Trezor offers guidance on phishing and wallet backups.
